Falling Bucket Problem

Featured Replies

Kind of a very basic question, but I am not basically a physicist.

A bucket with two holes on its sides is filled with water. If the bucket is allowed to free fall from a tower, will the water fall through the holes OR the water will not fall OR the water will spill from the top of the bucket ????

a body in free fall doesn`t experience the effects of gravity, so it would be like filling it on the space station, the water shouldn`t come out.

however in practice it will come out a little on Earth due to drag caused by air friction.

buckets are usually wider at the top than the bottom so the suction caused by drag should be greater at the top than the holes in the sides. i'd expect air to bubble into the water and the water to be sucked out the top.

but no, the water won't move relative to the bucket if you can persuade physics to ignore the air.
