Keeping Your Dragon Alive !

Featured Replies

This was a handicap game of Go I played as Black the other night against an opponent who was 17 ranks stronger than me (16K v 2D). As often happens, this turned into a life or death fight over the fate of  a ‘Dragon’. White resigned shortly after this move  - Can you see what happened next ?

Solution

B —> D11  W—> D12 (to protect a cutting point)

B —> E14  W—> D15 (to falsify an eye at E15)

B —> F13    W —> E12 (to protect the second cutting point)

B —>  G12   W —> Resigns

White resigns because Black has formed a second eye at G13 rendering his ’Dragon’ unkillable (The first eye is at Red A). Black’s other two main groups also have two eyes apiece (B.C.D.E.) so almost all the Black stones are now alive. The two points marked with a blue X are ‘false eyes’ that would be filled in during an end-game.)
