  1. Did you join the forums just to post that?
  2. I havn't looked at this yet, but is this guy going to be a crackpot?
  3. I can induce that kind of state. I just lay down and close my eyes. Once the dreaming starts I am not fully aware of it, just as with most dreams the memory of it receeds very quickly. But its very interesting to do regardless. Just laying down and letting your mind wander, thinking about various things. And then at some point your mind starts wandering in a different way, thought associations become much stranger. So while in normal thought I might be thinking of school, and then start thinking of math class. In this semi dream state I might be thinking about school, then start thinking about toothpaste, something apparently random. Visualization starts and becomes strange quickly, with very bizzare things happening. Overall its very interesting. And while in this quasi dreaming state I retain some abilities; I can still estimate the time, and I still can keep my "ears open" and can respond to tiny sounds. Its also quite restful, I find it to be like a nap, and you also dont feel groggy afterwords.
  4. Yeah unless this site becomes important or very well known there is no reason to have an article on it.
  5. People show know basic statistical math. It comes up pretty darn often in real life, although I can't really think of a good question to test this knowledge.

    Nuclear Power

People show plenty of faith in the fusion progam, its just expensive and time consuming. I wouldn't expect fusion power plants before 2050, assuming all goes well from here on in.
  7. [see my questions in the original thread] If you were standing on top of a mountain so big its peak was as high as the International Space Station, would you be able to stand (ie would you "stick" to the ground)? Yes you would. People have the impression that above the atmosphere gravity just switches off. When in reality you "float" in space because you're in freefall. Thinking back to last year, I'm pretty sure I would have been the only person in my grade 12 physics class to have known that. How is oil formed in the Earth? I'm not actually sure about this, since it was only mentioned in grade 6. I think its animal matter that is trapped in the earth, and pressure, heat and time breaks it down into oil. Plant material is coal I think. Huh, well wikipedia says it contains both plant and animal matter. I still think this is a good question though, considering how important oil is in todays world. What makes the elements on a stove get hot? This seems incredibly elementry to me, but I bet there are people who dont know the answer. Its just heating due to electric resistance. How does a microwave heat food? The microwaves cause water (and other polar molecules) to move back and forth, heating the food. I'm kinda getting off topic here, since I dont think these are necessarly "top 10 questions". I'm just trying to post things which are very basic questions which apply to everyday life, but which many people may not know the answer to.

    RL circuits

Isn't that the solution to an integral?
  9. I dont think I understand what the problem is here. How is the amount of energy being increased?
  10. The oldest fossils thing is a little odd, since its constantly changing. When my parents were in high school, were the oldest fossils almost 4 billion years old? I also dont think that memorization of such a number is particularly useful (although my guess of 4 billion years was close enough to be correct). The extra credit question should be on the list itself. Some other good general science questions: What causes earthquakes? (tectonic plates suddenly shifting with respect to one another) What is the difference between nuclear fusion and nuclear fission? (fusion is the process of atoms of light elements joining together, fission if the process of heavy elements splitting apart) What is nuclear radiation? (alpha, beta and gamma rays. I suppose high energy neutrons as well) What is the most common element in the universe? (Hydrogen) What is cancer? (the result of damage to DNA; cells in the body which no longer perform their regular functions and instead multiply very quickly) Of course all these questions and answers are quite simplified.
  11. Well.... different methods for determining velocity should not disagree. If b is moving away from a at 0.8c the velocity would be measured as being 0.8c. As far as I know anyway, we'll see once someone more educated comes in.
  12. Uh, do you know what a photon is? Your post seems... confused. I'm also not sure what you're asking, but here is wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photon
  13. Well it would take a long time for our signals to reach anywhere. Then it assumes that the aliens would be able to reach us, and considering how big space is that isn't too likely. If we detect signals, at least we would know. Although actually this idea has been proposed various times. I think its futile, and I'm also not keen on giving away earths location to an alien race of questionable intent. If the aliens are anything like humans then I definately dont want them to know where we are.
  14. Water in space would be ionized into hydrogen and oxygen to do solar radiation.
  15. Yay another sunspot post. Oh, it doesn't make sense? I'm shocked.
  16. Good question. As what alpha said (err, I think what he said anyway) was that it may be moisture from the cold thing that is pushing the oil back. Of course you would probably notice this. Is the part with no oil just dry? If so I'm out of ideas. And your english seems perfect.
  17. Ahh yes, I guess the heat would certainly provide enough pressure.
  18. Something like rock is not held together by gravity, its held together... because its rock, chemical bonds and stuff. Is the earth's rotation actually able to overcome the forces holding the crust in place?
  19. Now you're on the trolly. Think of space and time as just different versions of the same thing. They are dimensions, we just precieve one in a different manner. It isn't space and time, its spacetime, the combination.
  20. Space time is 4 dimensions, the 3 spatial ones combined with time. Anything more than that is string theory stuff, which hasn't gotten very far and is pretty much impossible to visualize anyway. Stick with visualizing space time, when you see something like "space is flat" its reffering to spacetime.
  21. What kind of crazy definition for hypothetical do you have Alpha? You're just making stuff up. It isn't hypothetical, its incoherent ramblings.
