  1. I've been stabbed in a dream once, and fallen off high places, I just wake up right after. I seem to always get reminded of Inception now every time someone mentions dreams.
  2. Thanks for the reply. I moved everything to the left, now I have: 2mgh - k(h² + l² + L² -2lh - 2Lh + 2Ll) / 2 = 0 I understand that part about factoring out h from (a*h + b*h) but how do I sort out the terms? Sorry If I seem really difficult, I understand what your telling me somewhat (really appreciated), but just not sure how to apply it to this specific equation. Thanks!
  3. Okay, I rearranged and got this: h² + l² + L² -2lh - 2Lh + 2Ll so then, the overall equation would be: mgh = k(h² + l² + L² -2lh - 2Lh + 2Ll) / 2 It just seems a lot more confusing now (h is now in 4 different places, with one of the h still being squared), how do I continue? Thanks!
  4. I can't use FOIL though because there are 3 terms inside the brackets and not just 2. When I expand I get: h² - hl - lh + l² - hL +lL - Lh + lL +L² There doesn't seem to be anything that cancels out to reduce this to 6 terms. How do I do this? Thanks!
  5. Thanks for the reply. I'm not a very mathy person, could you explain this to me more? Right now I have: k(-l-L)² * h² - mg * h = 0 I don't know if that is good for the quadratic formula or not (or if I rearrange the equation properly).
  6. Actually, I've figured out the equation (not quite the one that I posted above), thanks for the previous reply though. I need some help with my equation now, though, refer to this post (I thought it should be in it's own thread).
  7. Like the description says, I need help isolating h from: mgh = k(h-l-L)²/2 I'm almost certain that the quadratic formula needs to be used to isolate h, but I'm not sure how to use it (haven't used it since grade 9). Thanks!
  8. Thank you! I forgot, the person has no kinetic energy to start and non at the bottom. I didn't really think about the center of mass, we never really took that into account when doing other problems either, it was just ignored :/ (we always used boxes in our energy and momentum problems and just put the center of mass in the middle, and that was it) so I'm not sure how to create the equation to consider the center of mass of the person, the image the teacher gave us is like the one I drew, so the rope is tied around the persons feet. This is the equation I have now: h = (kx²/2mg)+(l+L) So this above equation works if the person is dropped from the hanging position (like on the image)? If the person falls from atop the bridge, would the equation look like this? h = (kx²/2mg)-(l+L) Thanks!
  9. Aren't objects in low earth orbit (LEO), or orbits in general, also examples of objects that are "dropped" but don't fall back down to earth?
  10. This is basically what I am given. I need to use all those variables as a function of the minimum height: I need to figure out what the minimum height of the bridge should be for the person to just barely touch the water, taking into account gravity, the mass of the person, etc. (all listed in the image). I need to take into account the Law of Conservation of Energy (LCE). This is what I came up with, but I'm not sure if it's right: h = (mv²+kx² / 2mg) + (l+L) *the lower case L (l) is supposed to be handwritten, like it appears in the image. Thanks for any help! Edit: btw, this is how I got the equation: mgh = mv²/2 + kx²/2 (by LCE) but h should actually be h minus the height of the person and length of the bungie cord, so: mg(h-(l+L)) = mv²/2 + kx²/2 then I just rearranged the above equation. mgh is the equation for gravitational potential energy mv²/2 is for kinetic energy kx²/2 is for elastic energy (bungie cord) Am I missing any other energies or variable? Thanks again for any help!!
  11. I found this article, it's pretty interesting. From the article: "Many people assume that marijuana was made illegal through some kind of process involving scientific, medical, and government hearings; that it was to protect the citizens from what was determined to be a dangerous drug. The actual story shows a much different picture. Those who voted on the legal fate of this plant never had the facts, but were dependent on information supplied by those who had a specific agenda to deceive lawmakers. You’ll see below that the very first federal vote to prohibit marijuana was based entirely on a documented lie on the floor of the Senate. You’ll also see that the history of marijuana’s criminalization is filled with: Racism Fear Protection of Corporate Profits Yellow Journalism Ignorant, Incompetent, and/or Corrupt Legislators Personal Career Advancement and Greed These are the actual reasons marijuana is illegal." Also, I wouldn't smoke marijuana even if it was legal.
  12. Alcohol also has benefits if you drink it in moderation. People who smoke marijuana can experience the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers do - mainly because you are inhaling particles. If I were to smoke marijuana (I don't smoke, personally I hate the smell of marijuana and I'm not even interested in getting "high", also, I tried it once, and I just felt no high and it burned my throat) I would probably "vaporize" it first, so I don't inhale so many particles (and just get pure THC instead). Also, smoking tobacco, I think, is worse than smoking marijuana, and yet marijuana is still illegal.
  13. If any bacteria gets into the pustule while popping it, an infection might occur, but most of the time, if you pop it properly, you may just leave a small scar that will heal and no damage will be done.
  14. Check out this link, offers a lot of great info.
  15. Could also be this (Cold agglutinin disease): Cold agglutinins are autoantibodies that cause red blood cells to clump, but only when the blood is cooled below the normal body temperature of 98.6°F (37°C). The clumping is most pronounced at temperatures below 78°F (25.6°C). http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/cold+agglutinins+test I don't think it is platelets clotting.
  16. Smoking, not getting enough exercise and eating improperly is not healthy, it's the exact opposite, it's just harming your body and health, and things like DDT are harmful to the environment. It's not natural to wake up and eat sugary cereal for breakfast, a BigMac for lunch, and KFC for dinner, sit and watch TV all day - living this sedentary lifestyle is not "natural." Raising a chicken in an environment where is has 2 inches to move and getting it to grow faster by pumping it with steroids is not natural. One of our products was the atomic bomb, was this natural? One of our other products was poisonous gas used to kill people, is this natural?
  17. Well, I wouldn't say ALL diseases are completely natural, because they could be caused by unnatural things, like smoking too many cigarettes and not getting enough exercise, as well as other hazardous synthesized chemicals (like DDT), surely these things can't be completely natural.
  18. It seems like there are supposedly quite a few ways to cure cancer, and cancer has been cured before (although sometimes it's just called a spontaneous remission from cancer). Nowhere has western medicine produced more dismal results than in the quest to defeat cancer. After more than 50 years of government-sponsored research, the rate of cancer has increased in America while the death rate remains the same.
  19. There is nothing wrong with going to a naturopathic doctor rather than a medical doctor. Also, I found an eHow page that shows you how to overcome a fear of doctors: http://www.ehow.com/how_2125170_overcome-fear-doctors.html
  20. I finished your survey, I'm actually interested in the result, when the survey is done, can you post the results here?
  21. You should probably see an ophthalmologist, or post this question where medical experts can help you, like http://www.medhelp.org/ or other online med help websites. I did find this one article however, it stated: These stars, or spots of light, that you see can occur after a sneeze, a deep cough, a blow to the head or low blood pressure (such as standing up too quickly). (http://vision.about.com/od/sportsvision/f/Seeing_Stars.htm)
  22. Nice site. It reminds me of http://academicearth.org/, but I think the site you suggested has a lot more video lectures.
  23. Here is the website for the Italian oncologist: http://www.curenaturalicancro.com/whois-simoncini.html Below are the you-tube videos. Part 1: Part 2: Tell me what you guys think. From his website: "His therapy based on the strongest antifungal substance, sodium bicarbonate, is harmless and very effective and should be adopted all over the world."
  24. The FDA does have some aberrant rules and regulations. Here is an excerpt from a book I have (Natural Prescriptions by Dr. M. Giller): "The supplement coenzyme Q10 (or CoQ10) has been of enormous help to my patients with congestive heart failure. (Unfortunately, CoQ10 is on the FDA's 'hit list,' not because it's dangerous, but because the FDA claims that it has no benefit." I also have another book (which I can't find at the moment so I can't tell you the name of the book or provide any specific examples) that compares the prices of certain drugs and medical equipment sold in USA to other countries around the world, the prices in USA (for the same drug) are substantially higher than in other countries. I also must note, Marat, that your examples are extremely over-exaggerated. There will never be a drug that cures EVERY disease and provides a youthful existence for 150 years.
