  1. You'll also get chlorine at the anode if you use NaCl.
  2. Yeah, like how it liberates a fair amount of elemental bromine from a bromide salt, with no help of another oxidizer.
  3. I agree. And right now, imo, there are several drugs in schedule 1 that shouldn't be there. The two that really stand out are cannabis and MDMA. MDMA had already help some people get over great trauma before it was made illegal. Everyone should watch the special report by Peter Jennings, "Ecstasy Rising". It was very brave of him to make that special, and it's a shame he died, he was a great reporter.
  4. bull, quick question...how dangerous is permanganic anhydride exactly? If everything is very clean, what is the chance of spontaneous explosions with it?
  5. I read a post once on sciencemadness.org about someone trying to make nitric using microwave plasmoids and directing the nitrogen oxides into water. I'm assuming this is the same basic principle.
  6. I was referring to a certain phenylethylamine that is made most commonly with KMnO4 by stimulant addicts who can't get their meth. I know the gov't doesn't care TOO much about KMnO4, but if you were to buy it on the same day as a certain over the counter secondary alcohol with a credit card, it might set off a twinge of suspicion.
  7. I don't see why marijuana is schedule I honestly, and it has uses in medicine. It's a painkiller and an appitite stimulant. We're kind of hypocrits when it comes to drugs. You don't know how many people I've heard absolutely WHORING over their vicodin/lortab/percocet prescription. They're like "I had surgery today and I got a vicodin prescription, I feel sooooo great right now" or something to that regard. Then they turn around and preach the evils of marijuana...come on. Marijuana is significantly less dangerous than alcohol to the body's organs, and in not addictive like opiates.
  8. Unfortunately, HNO3 is quite difficult to obtain.
  9. Probably hydrocyanic acid (aka. prussic acid). This acid fumes in high concentrations, so it's more likely to be accidentaly ingested, and inhalation allows the cyanide anion into the bloodstream very rapidly. Next comes the soluble salts of prussic acid. These are toxic by ingestion, but with a slower onset which gives more time to administer treatment (amyl nitrite and sodium thiosulfate are given as treatment I think). Cyanide containing compounds where the the cyanide anions are bound tightly as ligands are much less toxic. Iron hexacyanoferrate (the dye prussian blue) is an example. By the way, bitter almond essential oil is 3 to 5 % prussic acid.
  10. It's sold as "automatic iron filter replacement chemical".
  11. Nothing yet. But as you know, lots of fun things can be done with KMnO4. It's a hell of an oxidizer.
  12. Bumping this thread, for good reason. Sears has it. It's in the water filtration system section (near the laundry detergent and paint). Six lbs of pure potassium permanganate for $50. My friend and I split it, three lbs each. I found it amusing that when ringing it up at the register it actually comes up as "potassium permanganate", not some brand name like with most other OTC chems.
  13. Amyl nitrite and butyl nitrite (and maybe other alkyl nitrites?) are collectively called poppers and create a head rush and muscle relaxation upon inhalation. Some video head cleaners are amyl or butyl nitrite, and it is also sold in sex shops. It is not hazardous like some other inhalants, but can cause a headache just like nitroglycerin.
  14. Ya for subscripts you can either use latex OR use the subscript bb code... MnO[sub*]2[/sub] without the * gives MnO2. Superscripts can be done this way too... SO4[*sup]2+[/sup] without the * gives SO42+
  15. Ugh, I just found out that copper will be dissolved in the presence of oxidizing agents. Damn.
  16. I'm going to the beach in a few weeks, and I'm bringing my magnets, which ironically are magnetite magnets. I'm gonna collect tons of magnetite. It's great to get things for free.
  17. Initially I was just going to evap. the water/HCl (after allowing a fair amount of Ni to dissolve, probably let it do it's thing for a few days) and collect the NiCl2. I've heard it's a catalyst...this could be interesting. If anyone has any cool ideas for something to do with nickel chloride, feel free to post it. I could always toss some zinc in a soln. of nickel chloride and precipitate fine particles of nickel. Could be a good way to get superfine nickel powder.
  18. The energizer site claims that the lithium batteries they make have iron disulfide (aka pyrite) in them... http://data.energizer.com/PDFs/l91.pdf I guess in a very fine form it could look blackish greenish.
  19. I know this is an old thread but this is relevant to the original problem so I'm posting. I dropped three five cent us coins (25% nickel 75% copper) into HCl. Copper can't replace hydrogen so contamination shouldn't be a concern. Nothing happened at all. I figured nickel must react with acids painfully slowly, so I added H2O2. The coins instantly turned ashy looking and began bubbling H2 slightly. After 10 minutes the solution was slightly green from nickel being oxidized. So, if you want to oxidize Ni just add hydrogen peroxide. It really speeds it up. Still pretty slow but in awhile you should have a decent amount of nickel in solution.
  20. In fact, you could use platinum to light a stove burner in the event that you needed to and you were out of matches/lighters. Unlikely situation, but it would work. Pt will catalyze the reaction between CH4 and O2.
  21. The freebase is more addictive because of the way it is administered. When the freebase vapor is inhaled the drug reaches the brain within 5 seconds and produces an instant rush. Also, a user is more prone to seriously overdo it with freebase because it wears off quicker and they are apt to smoke more to get the high back. Freebase cocaine can either be prepared by basifying cocaine hydrochloride with ammonia and extracting with a nonpolar solvent (this is the high quality stuff) or just by basifying cocaine hydrochloride with sodium bicarbonate and boiling off the water (this is crack). It is lower quality mainly because some sodium bicarbonate is left in the rocks (stoich is unlikely to be correct in a crack smoker's lab ) (and sodium chloride too from the acid base reaction). cocaine hydrochloride + sodium bicarbonate ---> cocaine [base] + carbon dioxide + water + sodium chloride

  23. Mineral oil. All drug stores have it.
