I was wondering what is the NaCl doing in the lab?

Is the reagents that doesn't do much of anything NaCl? If so, why is it even there?

What will happen when i put 7g of CuSO₄ then filter paper, 7g of NaCl, then filter paper, sanded iron nail, and H₂0. I am really stuck and i don't know how to explain it scientifically of what will happen, and how? And what is the green color in the experiment, and where the gas bubbles come from, what reaction?
