  1. Hello guys, I was working with this complex numbers and got stuck in this confusion. [Pic attached] The confusion is that by solving with two different approaches, the value of [theta] obtained is different. In the first approach, I obtained argument [theta] = 0. Afterwards, using polar conversion, the argument obtained was [theta] = [pi] for the same problem. Is it possible because else for every complex equation; be it z^4-1, z^6-1, etc...I am getting [theta] = 0. Am I doing something terribly wrong? Is the complex to polar conversion and vice versa correctly done? Thanks for the help in advance
  2. Can we have a Faraday cage filtering a very specific wavelengths? Can we synthesize such a cage which can allow (a two way comm) only for a fixed band of signals, separating out the others? How are the satellites protected from the solar flares then? Isn't it advisable to put the entire satellite in a Faraday cage till the solar flares get diminished and then restart them after that?
  3. So what about the info which is described in this link? http://www.intelsat.com/resources/tech-talk/solar-weather.asp If the satellite parts are protected by multi-layer coverings inducing Faraday Cage effect, how can they transmit signals either way? One more question. If the IntelSat is using Faraday Cage effect in its assemblies does that mean the solar flares are of radiations of not more than few GHz? I have also seen in the Faraday Cage link of Wikipedia, where they quote: "Effectiveness of shielding of a static electric field depends upon the geometry of the conductive material. In the case of a non-linearly varying electric field, and hence an accompanying varying magnetic field, the faster the variations are (i.e., the higher the frequencies), the better the material resists penetration, but on the other hand, the better it passes through a mesh of given size. In this case the shielding also depends on the electrical conductivity of the conductive materials used in the cages, as well as their thicknesses." This creates a bit confusion to me now. Can you please solve it? Thanks in advance Chinmay
  4. How does Faraday Cage effect to communication? If the cage can take up an external charge on its own, will it hinder in transmitting signals from inside? Can it hinder a 1-20GHz communication band if designed to resist few hundred GHz communication? Thanks in Advance! Chinmay
  5. The problem is that here in India, we have an entrance named GATE for pursuing masters. The previous years papers had this sum. It has nothing to do with Computer/IT/Electronic Engineering. I myself am pursuing Civil, but this octal question was nevertheless asked. That's it. The importance of this was a seat in a good institute! I know that hex is now prevalent but I was keen to know how to figure out such mind numbing questions when you have less that 2 minutes to solve such questions! Thanks to all of my ScienceForum folks! You all are amazing and very helpful! Chinmay!
  6. Just missed a lecture on Higgs Boson! Damn! The lecturer was a scientist of Physical Research Laboratory! :'(

  7. John Cuthber: I got that problem solved by Schrodinger's hat. And yes, it is octal and not octahedral or octagonal, unlike what I saw in the book. Apologies! My only question is now how to find out whether the given arithmetic is based on octal calculations? Thanks in advance! Chinmay!
  8. I ran through some previous years GATE papers and found one question like this: If 137+276=435, then how much is 731+672? (a.) 534 (b.) 1403 (c.) 1623 (d.) 1531 The answer is c.) 1623 and their explanation is that it is an octagonal addition. I surfed over the net and received unsatisfactory answers that used calculators. Please help here! Thanks in advance! Chinmay This is what I tried. I don't know where I have mistaken, but there is some gross of it, I believe. S.O.S Thanks in advance! Chinmay!
  9. I want to ask that how one can solve a problem having two different sets of data, which are equally probable to happen? Can there be any iterative method that can solve that confusion? The problem is similar to the cases in courts. But my question is that how can one use the probability and its laws in solving that case? I saw something like the Markov Chain on the Numb3rs but is it possible? How can one use it? Can someone use psychology with probability? Thank you in advance!
  10. Can we observe Doppler effect, if the source of light, say Sun, is stationary and we are moving towards it? And what would happen for the same case if the observer is moving with the speed of light? Thanks in advance and sorry for my ignorance, if any!
  11. Ohh...That's great! But what does it mean that Hawkings pulls back his theory."? I mean what was Hawkings stand regarding role of black hole in generation or development of Universe, which he had to pull back?
  12. Recently, I came upon some statement like this: "Stephen Hakwing pulls back the Black Hole theory for the Universe" How much is it true? Please elaborate, anyone! Thank You!
  13. Many scientific theories have always remained ambiguous and every time apparent proofs are presented to remove that discrepancies. Now comes something new. What NASA and the astronomical fraternity believed has diverted a bit. What they thought that the Sun and planets were constructed of is under scrutiny again. Read more on the following link: http://www.scienceda...10623145430.htm This was the conclusion from the Genesis probe shot in 2004
  14. A great breakthrough in measuring "dark energy" in Universe has been found out. Check out this link for further understanding: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/01/110113145054.htm After reading this I felt as if Supernovae also feel themselves the Doppler effect!
  15. Life teaches us that ultimately our energy and efforts go in darkness. Isn't the Universe teaching us the same? A shining star at last converting to a black hole?!

    1. A Tripolation

      A Tripolation

Not all stars form a black hole upon expiry.

Thanks. Matter of research but I would keep it as a black hole! Just to keep the validity of statement

      :)
