Is the reagents that doesn't do much of anything NaCl? If so, why is it even there?

What will happen when i put 7g of CuSO4 then filter paper, 7g of NaCl, then filter paper, sanded iron nail, and H20. I am really stuck and i don't know how to explain it scientifically of what will happen, and how? And what is the green color in the experiment, and where the gas bubbles come from, what reaction? Thank you so much
