  1. From what I have experienced, you can have this moment while sleeping mostly or while rested. This is because your subconscious mind is actually working, and trying to solve the problem; you mostly will mot be aware of this. It happened to me a few times, like in the morning 10 mins before getting up, I would imagine the solution of a problem so well, that it hits me like "Duh, why didnt I think of it before", even for some really complex problems!
  2. I do understand what you are saying, but thats not how you define the requirments! What about power required to crush the object and the power source? Did you approximately calculate whats your upper limit, do you want to crush titanium? or just Tin cans? Whats the best you could find online on hydraulic companies and what do they offer in different sizes? Are there any universities which are researching on hydraulic joints and have any of them found a way to control small hydraulic machines? What pressure tank/punp will you be using? We cannot tell what you need unless you tell whats your financial limits are. How much you willing to spend? Answer some of these and then I'll do my best.
  3. You know just a moment ago I took this post as a little offensive and wrote a long reply, but after reflecting on what I wrote and realizing it looked a lot like an irritated retort, I erased it. However, after erasing it I pondered the statement and realized you are right in a very very minute way. I have noticed that in mathematics and complex physics like Relativity and Quantum mechanics, there are few instances where a problem is solved by making huge approximations and assumptions, and creating new problems. This makes me think. Thats all I have to say. your query is really not a easy one to answer but please dont generalize "Science" as a whole. Its just a way to realize our universe in a more materialistic way and move our civilization ahead. And yea Swansont, thats the most concise reply I have ever read. Wonderful. Man, by nature is power hungry so ready yourself to see a lot more of bad things happeneing these days. And remember Killa Klown, that Man will always use Science or Religion to gain Power and influence over the other. We all are seeing it in the news. Its always about power, always! No religion condones murder, hatred or cruelty, nor does science.
  4. Well, from my experience and as a 3rd year student you would have to look at this problem in a better way, and define it more clearly. For one, any physical system has upper and lower limits to its ability to convert energy, like here, electrical to mechanical. A DC/AC motor would not have that much power, for the size you have specified, to crush a metal can. And a hydraulic system of that size will firstly need to be really strong to handle that much pressure, secondly must have a machine which can supply that much pressure! However if you notice, there are other methods to make an exoskeleton, we here ourselves are working on Smart Memory Alloys to be used as muscles. Look it up online and restate, redefineyour ultimate goal.
  5. I joined back in 2004. Had some rough days, but as Dalek put it, its life. And Ecoli, thanks for a good laugh in days!!!!! Nice to see the fun side of SF. Have fun!
  6. wow, yea thats well put I was just thinking how, cumilatively, in about a billion years of earth's existence we have made such amazing progress in just two thousand years! Using the stone age term wasnt a good match, I just didnt know how to show my amazement Regards
  7. I dont know about that, it was suppoesed to be something to think about. Its not much of a riddle. Well, you can move it in a day or two:)
  8. The second one is a little advanced topic. In breif: A scattering polarizer is created by subjecting a polymer dispersed liquid crystal film to tensile strain. The optomechanical properties of the film are investigated by simultaneously measuring the stress-strain and polarization dependent optical transmission characteristics. The correlation between transmittances of two orthogonal polarizations and the stress-strain curve reveals that the polymer orientation as well as the droplet shape anisotropy influences the liquid crystal alignment within the droplets. A Monte Carlo simulation based on the P. A. Lebwohl-G. Lasher [Phys. Rev. A 6, 426 (1972)] model is used to explain the subtle influence of polymer orientation on liquid crystal alignment. Photomechanics is used and you need electronic transducers to measure the deflections. If you plan to just write about the phenominon then take a look at this paper. Regards
  9. Thanks for the tip, i guess i didnt think of that because white in itself is difficult to see.
  10. I dont know the hackability of the SCART. It 'could' cause a possible disruption in the normal/original flow. If you are planing to hook it while its transmiting.
  11. Do you know, literally speaking, we are still living in the Stone Age? We still communicate in Morse code. We still use steam piston for most of the power (at least most). Guess how and if you don’t get it then highlight the text below: ===TEXT=== Stone Age: All electronics and IC's are made up of SiO2. That’s stone and sand! Morse code: We still communicate and store our data in off's and on's (0's and 1's) as we did with the Morse code! Steam Engine: Every possible way for generating power uses the steam engine phenomenon. Even in nuclear plants, water is heated and used to rotate large turbines! ===/TEXT=== I came to think of this because of an article in IEEE June 2006 Spectrum magazine on semiconductors. At the end of a paragraph it was there. “...all from rocks”. Imagine, technology is all on earth, just the way we bring it out is what matters. In a good way or a bad way, depends on us how we use the Wisdom! Tell me why do you think we have advanced so much and still have world problems? How far till we move on to other planets? And lastly, how long will we survive? Regards!
  12. Well, you got the demon tools part working. And also opening the bin file. Try running the VCD files on VLC media player because most of the torrent downloaded files need more codecs to run properly. VLC Media Player (small and effective!) : http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
  13. Hi there, I have collected a few sites for you to check. 1. Pic programmer from Cheap to Expanded using parallel port: http://www.rentron.com/Myke4.htm 2. PIC programmers with software too: http://www.coolcircuit.com/project/picprog/ Now looking at your PIC; I dont think PIC16F84A has any inbuilt ADC. Check here at MicroChips Website Notice that you can even consider, PIC16F72 and PIC16F77 as both have 8bit 8 ADC channels. (you know, 8 inputs from analog sources giving an 8bit output) ====================================================== Ok, if you are just thinking of logging in your data "directly' to a PC then you can connect the ADC to a mux and feed in to your laptop/PC. For which the design has to be thought out. for example: Core engine temp -> ADC -> serial-input to parallel port/serial port of PC The ADC which can be used is a serial one. ADC0838: 8 channel - serial out to PC ADC0834: 4 channel - serial out to PC ADC0832: 2 channel - serial out to PC Have fun designing!
  14. Or if you are really not in for the lawyer trouble, then write a detailed report and get it signed by your most trusting professors with proper date (or even pictures?) some kind of proof that u had in mind first. I had a really bd experience in college when my friend made a working model of something I told him a few months back, he didnt even include my name. Sad shit happens all the time. keep inventing though!
  15. Not raelly with household items. To see IR anyway you need a IR enabled camera. Try your mobile phone first. Press a few buttons of yout TV remote in front ofthe lence and see. you should see some faint light. To have glasses, you wouldneed to mount a small camera and a screen google 'IR glasses' 'IR camera glasses' or something to find a few projects
