Hey guys,

I was just wondering, how scientifically accurate is this article?

Does pornography really contribute to PIED (pornography induced erectile dysfunction)? Does it make men less attracted to females?

Any thoughts?

Also, is the article saying that simply watching pornography leads to erectile dysfunction or do they mean masturbating while watching online pornography?

Is this proven fact? Do we have any statistics on this?

What are the latest scientific studies suggesting?

Regards,

Mr Rayon

One can become habituated to a certain routine and when that happens it can take a while to adapt to a new situation. For a pre-internet person this might not be such a problem switching sexually from one form to another but someone born mid-eighties onwards it's possible that is all they know and it could be a major problem in terms of frequency amongst that generation.

That would be a first; a species masturbating themselves to extinction.

How can you be sure it hasn't happened? I think there have been hominid fossils in close proximity to coconut shells.

I could understand how oil could wipe out a whole species.

This is much more related to psychological desensitization and becoming numb to normal sexual stimuli than it is about erectile dysfunction which is a physiological issue.

Does this mean the above TedTalk is wrong?

Why does it say all over the internet that watching pornography and masterbating to it causes erectile dysfunction?

Why does it say all over the internet that watching pornography and masterbating to it causes erectile dysfunction?

"All over the internet" is not a proper citation.

What are the latest scientific studies suggesting?

If you've been all over the internet, you tell us what the science suggests.

Why does it say all over the internet that watching pornography and masterbating to it causes erectile dysfunction?

If a man is habitually used to feeling his hand as the means of pursuing his objective and loses his erection as soon as he tries to engage in real intercourse is that not a dysfunction? It's only dysfunctional in particular circumstances; it's essentially psychological, as iNow said.

The thing here is folks that true ED is a physical problem. Basically, due to a few different possible reasons, not enough blood is getting pumped to Ol' One-Eye. So he cannot stand tall and at attention, let alone get "harder than a diamond in an ice storm" like when we were in our 20s.

(I for some reason--vanity?--am compelled to interject at this juncture that yours truly does not suffer from this malady, ED). But I'm barely 40, so....

Anyway, yeah, it's a physical thing, ED. But the only way I see a porn addict becoming unable to get erect would be from a psychological problem. As in the real thing, the sex acts he's trying to engage in, might seem lackluster compared to some of the graphic porn he watches. And probably his partner is not as attractive or endowed (or enthusiastic?) as those wonderful girls in the porno flicks?

So if this is the case, and it is, it is not a true DX of ED. It needs a different name, and is better filed in the DSM than as a true physiological malady.

Hope this helps, thanks!

I am willing to bet that there is at least an order of magnitude more bandwidth devoted to porn than to claiming that it causes erectile dysfunction.

My guess would be 4 orders of magnitude.

So, it is not " all over the internet"

So, (and you have been told this many times before) ...

Before you ask us to explain something. check that the thing is actually true.
