The Tactical Strategist
Is that how we get out "mates"?. Lots of animals get theirs by attractions, and that's why flowers evolved. Attraction. Is that why women are considered beautiful, or do we just pick randomly
Wolfhnd
Is anything "random" at the phenotype level? I don't want to go into a long discussion on what "random" means in this context but you may want to clarify the question a bit.
The Tactical Strategist
Oh, I'm sorry. Random. I mean this by saying do we just pick a female for "no" reason as our "mate"
Wolfhnd
The scientific evidence strongly suggests that mating is not "random". The "random" element seems to relate to opportunity
The Tactical Strategist
Well I don't mean random. But that's just the word I can think of.
Robittybob1
Well I don't mean random. But that's just the word I can think of. Random would be the right word if there was no selection.
The Tactical Strategist
Basically, how do we pick our mates. Is it by physical attraction like birds and flowers, or some other way
Bill Angel
Historically most marriages were arranged by parents. This idea of people marrying for "love" is a recent development in human history.

Marrying, maybe, but I don't think it's unreasonable to point out that the association between marriage and mating has never even come close to approaching absolute in human history. The Tactical Strategist
But in modern day, is their any similarity on how we pick our partners with animals? Is it because of their beauty? Or another reasons. Now, I know people say looks aren't everythings and all that stuff. Which I agree. But subconsciously, maybe in some hidden animal part of us, is that how we pick

Or another reasons. Now, I know people say looks aren't everythings and all that stuff. Which I agree. But subconsciously, maybe in some hidden animal part of us, is that how we pick It's not even sub-conscious. If we didn't rely heavily on looks in picking our partners, there'd be no reason for a saying like "looks aren't everything" to exist. There's no reason to make that observation if looks aren't frequently treated as everything. By way of example, kidneys are also not everything when it comes to partner selection, but nobody ever bothers to point that out because pretty much nobody cares about your kidneys when choosing a partner. The Tactical Strategist
True. True. Ok then. I just had the thought as I know plenty of animals look attractive to get mates, and show they are fit and strong, so I wondered if something like that was with us
