Is sexual preference a choice?

To answer your question John, you must first answer mine; why do you engage in conversations that will never effect you in life? Along with that, why must you be so judgmental of other people's opinions?

How do you know what will or will not affect someone's life? Life is what happens to you when you are making other plans...

humans don't like to go around humping things, as far as I know.

(Don't anyone tell him about porn on the internet. It's a secret.)

This isn't opinion, and such discussions do affect people. There's a whole slew of people in my country who want to continue to deny equal rights to people based on their sexual orientation, and even though I'm not a member of the group being discriminated against, it diminishes me to see that treatment.

I know that there are others who feel the same way.

My final thing to say about this (mostly because this is getting me no where and it's getting boring), the thing that mostly confuses me about homosexuality, is that it doesn't work. Penises don't fit inside of penises, nor vaginas inside of vaginas. The Bible tells me it's wrong so obviously I'm going to be against it, but it also confuses me because it doesn't work, at all, what so ever. Monkeys do "gay" things to show domination, but in humans it's not like we're fighting for territory. Penguins do it because they're stupid and can't tell the difference between their own genders, but we're not that dumb (unless we are). Dogs do it because they're dumb and they just like humping stuff, but humans don't like to go around humping things, as far as I know. So why? Why do it if it doesn't make any sense to anything about your life?

All humans who don't have children, including homosexual couples, become part of the pool of caregivers modern human society needs. Our intelligence, along with animal husbandry and modern agriculture, has allowed us to specialize in task generation for the good of the society. We're no longer so focused on hunting/gathering, procreation and survival since our needs can be met by others (I don't have to farm because the farmer does, and he doesn't have to make lamps to light his barn because I do that for him).

Raising children requires a lot of resources. Those who choose NOT to raise children are able to help society in many other ways. Some homosexual couples fill the void not having children leaves by volunteer work with schools and other organizations that benefit kids. Others are just handy baby-sitters with more time than most because they don't have their own kids.

I think we need to recognize all the benefits certain groups bring to society and not just key on the ones we belong to. If we all thought the same way, none of the rest of you would be necessary.

So i had this sister, who was, just like everybody else, straight.

But then she started experimenting and was like "i m bi-sexual."

Then she was all like "okay, i 'm fully lesbian."

And then she was like "Hey, i 'm pregnant."

So?

A friend of mine and her other half are thinking of starting a family. I didn't think it was polite to ask how, given that they are both women.

More importantly, while it's amusing to laugh at Peter BE Cimp's astonishing naievete,

I'd still like him to address the point I raised (and he ignored) earlier in respect of his claim that sexuality is a choice..

I asked "OK, so you think the people jailed, persecuted and killed for their sexuality have chosen that fate?

Seriously?

They wanted to make their own lives difficult- or even terminal?"

Incidentally, I'm sorry Peter, but I'm not sure I can answer your question "To answer your question John, you must first answer mine; why do you engage in conversations that will never effect you in life?"

As far as I'm aware, I don't think I ever do engage in such questions. (The word is affect BTW)

It's fair to say that I might idly discuss things like what I would do if I won the lottery - that's pretty unlikely since I have never bought a ticket.

On the other hand, such conversations allow me to contemplate what I (and those with whom I'm talking) really value.

At any rate, it has absolutely nothing to do with this thread,

You are making a whole bunch of assumptions there (the obvious one is that I'm straight and you happen to be right. The less obvious ones are about the orientation of everyone I know and care about- on which point you are hopelessly wrong)

So, enough of the pointless bluster an dilly dallying.

Answer the question.

Do you think the people jailed, persecuted and killed for their sexuality have deliberately chosen that fate?

And then I was like "cool story bro".

Porn isn't humping everything, it's just humping people. I seriously meant humping everything, cause that's what dogs do. Unless by porn you mean watching dogs hump stuff, but I wont judge you.

When a mommy and a daddy love each other very much, they don't go and try to have sex with a random guys leg...

Are you guys comparing humans to dogs as a whole, or just yourselves?

I like how much effort you guys are putting into this, it really shows what you care about in life.

Let's not get distracted. This is an important point and it shouldn't get dismissed like this.

Sexuality simply isn't a choice. If you think back on it, it was never a choice for you, Peter. It was never a choice for me. Heterosexuals are attracted to the opposite sex for whatever reasons, and homosexuals are attracted to the same sex for whatever reasons.

If it were a choice, there would be something I could offer you to choose differently than you already have. To get you to start dating men, if you could choose to be attracted to them, I could offer you a million dollars, or to pay for a loved one's vital operation, or to work for you for free for the rest of my life (just examples of extraordinary rewards, pick anything you find ultimately tempting). You might be able to fake it for the reward, but could you truly choose to go against the sexuality you have? Why should it be any different for anyone else?

Yes, I care about equality.

Got a problem with that? (That's a rhetorical question. I don't mind much whether you care about my opinion or not).

How about answering the question I asked.

Do you really think people choose to get killed for their sexuality?

Obviously it's not going to take a week, but if I really wanted to be gay, then I could become gay. It may take a while, but I, and anyone else that really wanted to, could do it. And that goes vise versa as well; if a gay person really thought that they shouldn't be gay, they could, and it may take a while, become not gay.

You're wrong. Sexual orientation conversion therapy has been shown to both not work, and be harmful. The science demonstrates that people can't simply choose to change their sexual orientation.

It's thought that the basis of sexual orientation is laid out during fetal development. Epigenetic models exist to support the theory that the underpinnings of sexual orientation are determined during the neural development of the fetus.

As a good christian, I'm always going to disagree with any proof you try to give me. Also as a high school student, none of you will ever win an argument with me because your point will never get across to me; I'll always find some fault in your argument whether it's correct or not.

On another note, and I'm sorry John that I've been neglecting your question, no I don't think people like getting killed for their sexual orientation, but we're not the ones doing the killing. This may sound very American-self-centered, but it's they're choice to continue to be gay in a country that kills them for it, and/or continue to live in the country that kills them for their own decisions in life. If they honestly don't want to be killed for their lifestyle, but they don't want to leave their home-land, something's going to have to change, or they gonna die. Life is all about choice, but whether you make them or not is your problem. We are not dogs, we don't have tails, and we all have our own opinions; that being the case makes it more stupid of people who continue to be stubborn in the face of death/persecution. You can say that maybe the people should stop doing the persecuting in the first place, but who's going to listen to you? Especially after all of you've been arguing with a high school student who has shown more education and all together smartness (and I love to use that made up term) than a whole lot of the people that have tried and failed to make me look bad (pardon my cockiness).

To be the mature adolescent here, I'm going to end this thread with saying that, what I've gotten out of this, and in the interest of the ORIGINAL QUESTION; you guys have your opinions, however much based on "facts", and I have mine, however much based on logic. I don't care about anything else anyone has to say, yall may continue to argue about this, just know that I was the one who started it, and now I'm finishing it. Let's see how many un-likes I can get from that, I'm aiming for 10.

I can see someone taking that as an ironic signature.

How someone could type that on a computer that relies on science and technology for its very existence beggars belief.

This seems to be saying that you will always win the argument because you cannot really understand the counterargument - surely you don't mean that? It reads as if you are rejoicing in your ignorance - you are on a science forum and thus I cannot believe this mindset actually exists.

Not sure which is the most insulting assumption - that no homosexuals are killed in the USA (wikipedia) or that people always have a choice to move away from oppression. I am sure the subsistence farmers, fishermen, factory workers and agricultural labourers in various parts of sub-saharan Africa and India are just gonna pack up and move to EU or USA now anti-homosexual laws have been enacted

"You can say that maybe..." - maybe?! MAYBE! Here you seem to be advocating the persecution of homosexuals - that is a new low

Let me translate the above for other members. "I posted something quite seriously which I thought was fairly uncontested - now that those who actually know their stuff and have studied the subject have pointed out how wrong this was I am going to pretend firstly that I won the argument and secondly that I was trolling all the time"

I know from experience that it is not a choice. I am confidently bisexual, but I might be homosexual since I don't feel any attraction to women. I want to be heterosexual, however, but no matter how hard I try I can't get horny about women. What's the Christian logic here? I should die? I'd rather be helped, but I don't think it's something that can be helped, so I'll just deal with it. I'm strictly against homosexual promotion though (gay pride events, etc).

If you honestly want help with it, and your devoted to it, then there is help you can get. Talk to people who know more about it than I do though. If you want help from me then I can give you as much help as I can, but it'll be harder to get a point across here with all the dogs on this site barking up my tree and humping my legs.

You can't pray away the gay. Again, you're simply wrong. Conversion therapy is regarded as harmful by the WHO.

"n 2012, the Pan American Health Organization (the North and South American branch of the World Health Organization) released a statement cautioning against services that purport to "cure" people with non-heterosexual sexual orientations as they lack medical justification and represent a serious threat to the health and well-being of affected people"

Well obviously YOU can't, and I wasn't planning on it, but again, you can't get any help if you don't want to be helped. Also, I can only give you so much help until someone tries to jump down my throat, which apparently only takes one comment to happen.

I don't think that you can help me. What methods were you thinking of using? Would you teach me how to flirt with girls, or how to act around girls? Because I can handle all that, I'm a very charismatic person and am good around other people when I want to be. I don't think you are able to change how my penis operates, that is the only thing preventing me from being heterosexual. Again, what methods?

I'll happily "jump down the throat" of anyone suggesting someone undertakes a course of pseudo-medical therapy demonstrated to be harmful and ineffective.

Well how is your penis operating, if you don't mind me asking? And I was planing on using some form of logic (which will quickly be forced away by all you guys who fallow me around on this site) to help you first understand that being strait works better, and for you to understand that if your strait, you wont have to worry about what other people think about you (unless you already don't so you can ignore all of this). And then after that, maybe I would pray, and use the Bible to help you, however much all you "geniuses" don't like it.

And I'm sure you'd happily "jump down the throat" of anyone or anything that you think is 'harmful' or 'ineffective', with more then just your words.
