Hello everyone!

I'm starting an undergraduate degree in computer science and physics in September, but I'm really passionate about lots of diverse scientific fields and therefore love to engage myself in studying and practicing as much as I can. In addition to the two disciplines I mentioned above, examples of subjects I'm attracted to are mathematics (pure and applied), artificial intelligence, astronomy, astrobiology, biology, computer programming and so forth.

I've decided to join this forum as I'd like to discuss with people having similar interests and, of course, learn more through those who have a wider knowledge about the topics.

I hope I'll be able to get to know a lot of people! :)

Hello all. I haven't formally introduced myself yet until now.

Existing Member

I came here several years ago, with a mild interest in science. I was searching for something. Then life happened.

Education Background

I'm a non-scientist and non-mathematician. But I still hold some interests in physics, philosophy, and maybe more fields. My formal education was art.

Scientific Experiments and Tools

My laboratory and experiments exist only in my head. I try to maximize my imagination or visualization to better approximate my ideas or comprehension of other own ideas. However, I'm now aware these are unreliable.

Forum Activity

My time is freed up a bit, so I might be more active from time to time and able to learn a thing or two and maybe contribute something useful.

Hello, you can call me Firebirdy. I decided to join this forum because it's been getting harder for me to socialise online anonymously because of phone number verification protocols on the popular social media platforms. Anti-adblockers have made it harder for me to socialise online anonymously. Websites that require me to put cookies in my computer are annoying. I just want website owners, advertisers, and governments to politely mind their own business instead of spying on my online activities. 2021 has been beyond an Orwellian nightmare from what I experienced. Which is why I deleted all of my accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Yahoo!, and other platforms. At this point, I don't care if I'm losing a lot of people to talk to because I don't want to join the bandwagon of compromising my online anonymity to benefit political terrorists that want to nosily spy on me. So, I'm trying these science forums from this website. Here is my personal information I shared on a wesbite that had powertripping moderator(s) and administrator(s):

My personality is outspoken, introverted, curious, questioning authority, and only genuinely nice to people who deserve it.

People who are liars selling their souls that only care about money, power, fame, sex appeal, and sex disgust me.

Environmentalism, music, human rights, zoology, online privacy, gun rights, freedom of speech, nutrition, intellectual freedom, and finding right people to have conversations with interest me.

I'm pro-secular capitalism, especially since I'm an anti-religion atheist that prefers science and scientific proof rather than faith and theocracy.

Woketivists, tranazis, feminazis, snowflakes, and political correctness don't impress me.

Hi guys!

I’m an autodidact astrophysicist.  I’m kinda blasphemous, scientifically and otherwise.   I don’t support much of prevailing physics, which is what led me to stray from formal education in the first place.   I’m here because I like to geek out on science.   I like that your categories are so diverse.   Looks like a cool place.  Glad I crossed path with you.

Welcome Rift Zone, glad you decided to join us! Hope it's a long and mutually beneficial membership.

Just so things don't get off on the wrong foot, remember that as a science site you will be expected to provide evidence if you make a claim that runs counter to the 'prevailing physics'. As long as you meet that requirement I think you'll find that the members here love a good discussion.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I appreciate it.

My good sir, I’m well aware “autodidact astrophysicist” does and probably most of the time should read like “seriously batshit crazy”.   However, I’m also aware that that theories are comprised of roughly two elements: observations, and interpretation of that data; the theory that is more comprehensive and aligns with observation better is the more accurate theory.period.   -My school of thought was built on that.   Suffice it to say I have little concern for my ability to engage in proper scientific discourse.

Hi. I just got here.  I was posting a math question to my favorite pinball machine forum, off topic section of course, and quickly realized I need to take it to the right place.  This came up first in a Google search for science forums, so naturally it must be the best!  The discussion did make me realize that I had no understanding at all of planet size comparison.  I was thinking that 2.4 times bigger was 1 times 2.4, but apparently I was not carrying the radius or something, who knows.  I'm not freaking Good Will Hunting over here!  Clearly.

In short, I was able to take my own ignorance away from the discussion.  Which is good?  Right?

Anyway, I'm a writer and I'm outlining a YA Sci-fi book series, so hopefully I will have some amazingly absurd and preposterous questions, as well as plenty of lunacy for you.  Hopefully many of you have a great deal of indulgence on tap, ready to flow from inside of you. That will be helpful for both of us.

No doubt it will be needed for, if nothing else, for when I try to debate why I think that creating a mini black hole is a great way to solve a planets gravity problem, despite zero evidence to back it up.

Cheers

PS, the first thing I found here was the banned section.  I spent twenty minutes reading it.  It's hilarious!  Lots of bans for socket puppeting.  So funny.  All though in all fairness, if I have multiple personalities, then doesn’t each of them deserve their own account?  And if so, then is it such a crime if they all just happen to agree with me?  Hmmmm?  Food for thought?  No?  Ooky dooky!

Yes the banned list is very entertaining, isn't it? Some of the entries seem to have been crafted with some care for humorous effect.

Hello.  Background in life sciences, but have ranged widely into other areas including AI, cognitive science, astronomy, and cosmology.  Also some interest in bioethics and philosophy of science.  I was, until a month ago, the Admin of sciencechatforum.com, a website that crashed after it was bought up by a  "web development" company that turned out to be running a Ponzi Scheme on its investors and was seized by the U.S. SEC.  The receivership handling the liquidation of its assets could not, for reasons obscure to me, keep the website up and running.  One day, we all woke up and the site was gone.   ScienceForums seems to be a website with a rather similar structure and a pretty good signal/noise ratio, which suggests good moderation and tossing of trolls.  Well done.  This refugee from late-stage capitalism is happy to be here!

Well what a story! such is the modern world!

Looking forward to seeing more from you, I highlighted what caught my eye, too often overlooked these days!

Welcome! I’ve been a refugee from such sites more than once in the past. We even created another of our own a few years back in response when one got bought by some folks who couldn’t have cared less about science and the related methodology or cultural expectations of the site. Looking forward to you contributions.

Hello. I just followed The Vat over from the late sciencechat forum. As with iNow, it's not my first shipwreck... but I'm really not up for many more. Especially given Covid and my woefully curtailed activity and human contact in the walking world.

I'm retired; run a small online book business with my old partner, live in rural Ontario, where we feed a bunch of useless feral cats, grow ungrateful vegetables and write books - including a couple of science fiction ones, if that qualifies me for consideration. If it doesn't, I used to be a medical technologist back in the 20th century.

*Got my second shot today! And it doesn't hurt yet.*

The gag came off at c. 5pm. Does it go back on at 8 again?

(I surmise it's to monitor the activity of new members, in case they attempt leafleting or proselytizing. I accept the need for such vigilance, but find it a bit irksome to keep receiving notifications to which I can't respond.)

Hello!

Stumbled in here looking for some info on how to fix my metallograph using nothing more than a 2 pound engineer's hammer and duct tape.

First thread I perused was the memorial to the banned. I found high concentrations of wit and was well pleased. Therefore, my priorities have moved from fixing my metallograph to:

- sign up to join the forum (complete)

- read more threads to gauge the forum flow/dynamics

- learn stuff and discover more wit

First, find out where the engineers live, then find one that weighs 2 pounds (protip: look for the smallest house). Next, put some duct tape face up like flypaper outside their door. When the 2 pound engineer gets stuck, take his tiny hammer and fix your metallograph.

Welcome!

Greetings! You can call me Sid. School was all over the place: Art/Graphic Design Major to Pre-Med and then ultimately settling down in the hard sciences. Did a lot of undergrad research in microbiology and entomology, as well as a summer job doing field research.

As much as I hate the cliche, I’d say jack of all trades, master of none is probably an apt description of myself. I’ve studied and worked in several fields and just sponge up as much knowledge as I can from every experience.

I came here to find like-minded folks to “talk shop” and have interesting/fun discussions. Looking forward to it!

My favorite kind of people.
There are quite a few of us here that fit that description.
We know enough about many things so as to be interesting, and not enough about one particular thing so as to be boring.
Welcome.
