A solar powered cell phone charger is one such environment friendly product which can be used by people all over the world on an everyday basis and a large amount of electrical energy can be saved in this manner. This solar charger is a device which will make use of the solar energy provided by the sun and convert it into the required amount of electrical energy which is needed in order to charge the mobile phone. A small solar panel is installed inside this solar charger which will convert the solar energy into the required form for charging the mobile phone.

would it be possible for a solar cell to power a cell phone?

if it was not exclusively powered by the solar cell it would extend the time between charges (assuming that it has a battery and can still be charge conventionality)

right?

A phone battery contains 100-250 W·h/kg of energy. In practical terms, assuming a single battery weighs 30 g, that is 11-27 kJ of electric energy.

A solar cell can generate 100-150 W/m2 if it is in the full (summer, daytime) sunshine...

If you make that a practical 30x30 cm (or 1 square foot), you get 10-15 W per cell. That could generate enough electricity for your phone to charge in approx. 15-45 min.

It's a back-of-the-envelope calculation. I hope I didn't make a mistake. :)

If you google "soloar powered phone charger" you will find that not only is the idea feasible but they are readily avaiable.

it seems like clarification is needed.

what i meant was a solar cell directly on the phone producing power for the phone to slow battery drain rate

Hi dragonstar, at first sight this seems basically how small a solar cell could be and yet provide all or a useful amount of the power needed for a cell phone. Again at first sight it would seem to be something that could be worked out from data sheets for solar cells and available space on the phone. However there is a detail that perhaps you hadn't thought of. Most women carry their phone in a handbag and most men carry their phone in a pocket. If you carry your phone in "a place where the sun don't shine" the solar cell won't be able to provide much power.

Fashion can change fast... and this could be an excuse for people to constantly show off their phone. I think it could be more popular than you realize.

it would also allow people to claim to be earth friendly which seams to be popular now even if the solar cell they still had to charge it (much like calculators that have a solar cell and batteries

IIRC there are flexible solar films out there. One might be able to rig up some form of flexible shoulder cover (like a patch for the tops of the shoulders on a sweater) solar charger with phone connections coming from the pocket or down the sides to connect to a hip holster.

If you did manage to mount solar panels on the backside of the phone, a front pocket or chest (upper pectorals) mounted holster would probably enable a decent charge without getting too much in the way. This would be in a similar position to a shoulder strap mounted 2-way radio.

and if the person had some kind of headset you could run another connection that would go to some kind of hat that could have solar panels on it

Now a days all things are possible. We have a limited source of our Electric energy getting from water and wind. so we have to find some other options also to get the energy to satisfy our requirement. So Scientists are trying for that made a solar car which can drive with solar energy. So we can say that our cell phone can also drive with it.
