When you place conducting plates in it, there are electromagnetic modes that are excluded from the space between them, you reduce the vacuum energy in that space. Only Matter can produce energy in any form like you said 'electromagnetic force' else impossible for vacuum to actually have energy. Please correct me if i am wrong. swansont Posted August 13, 2010 Share Posted August 13, 2010 If you solve the "particle in a box" you find that the electromagnetic modes have an energy of (n+1/2)*hbar*w.
