ajb Posted June 17, 2009 Share Posted June 17, 2009 You want to know why string theory says 26 or 10 dimensions? Basically, a classical non-interacting string theory can be formulated in any dimensions. The problem comes when one tries to quantise this theory. It turns out that such a quantum theory can only be consistent in 26 dimensions for a bosonic string and 10 for a supersymmetric string. The original interest in 11d comes from the fact that certian string theories are low energy limits of (the unique) 11d supergravity. Here is a good video on the subject of String Theory, which was not Einstein's, but was based on his pioneering efforts.
