Nitrous oxide

Recommended Posts

I know that N2O can be formed by decomposing ammonium nitrate or mixing sodium nitrite and hydroxylammonium chloride, but I also saw this equation on wikipedia. Does aqueous ammonium nitrate really decompose into nitrous oxide and water?

NH4NO3(aq) -> N2O(g) + 2H2O(l)

Thankfully, it seems as if the equation on Wikipedia has been corrected. Of course, there is no way aqueous ammonium nitrate could decompose into nitrous oxide and water (at least not at any appreciable rate, as John Cuthber mentioned).
