looks to me as if it's one of kinematic equations, used for calculating final velocities when initial, acceleration and distance traveled are known.

Do you mean

$V_f^2 = V_0^2 + 2ax$

Looks like a kinematics equation for calculating the final velocity given initial velocity, acceleration, and distance traveled.
