Whats up with still having Indian reservations?

Recommended Posts

I mean come on we won, it was a LONG time ago. They shouldnt be able to get out of paying taxes any more. They drive on our roads and benefit from US citizens but dont have to pay themselves. Think of the way we treated black people. Why dont we give them anything?(just an example, i know that there were different situations)

I can see why reservations were implimented at first but i think its time to move past it.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the subject?

The tribes are actually they're own "nation," and any of the indian reservations I've been too I wouldn't exactly call swank. Most indians apparently live in poverty as well.

Leave them alone.

I think integration would be immensely helpful for them, but I see no reason to foist it upon them. It's something many have done voluntarily. If they don't want to integrate, so be it.

I have some Indian in me and could have qualified for a roll number if my ancestor had not refused to be counted by the Dawes census takers. I agree that it is rankling to see Casinos built in Oklahoma when as a state we've made a decision not to build them.

OTOH, these benefits are the vestiges of the few promises made to Indian tribes which the government is honoring. It's a matter of keeping our word to at least some degree.

You guys are obviously from the USA. From what I've seen up here in the great white north, views are so torn you can barely tell they're from the same country. People seem to oppose the caste separation, and yet they still get all the amenities one could ask for. Welfare checks, tax exemptions, free healthcare, free post-secondary education and even gun ammo and booze checks!

I'm all for helping the down and out get back on their feet, but at this point it's just lunacy! They aren't even down and out! They get more money than I do, and I still have to pay for school!

Frankly, I'm for reintegration, whether they like it or not... and obviously not; who'd want to give up free money?

That is a key example of the harm caused by socialist influences on the american economy. Why give up free money?not many people can do it, so everyone stays poor, hey they get to blame the rich for their problems, and gov't officials are trying to get them more free money and don't have to work for a penny of their government aid.

Why do the reservation still exist? well obviously someone is beneffitting :P

and like Silkworm said, they are their own nations, so its not like you could force an integration without an invasion, and that just isn't happening anytime soon.

I'm half-blooded down in arizona, but really I just know a bit about what went on / goes on down here. What's the Canadese background on N.A. history?

This isn't the full story. The major problem wasn't the Spanish going hog wild or anything. A combination of foreign viruses, whisky trade and forced integration were what really hurt the natives in Canada.

Ugh. I don't know what happenned to all the net sources I used during high-school.

Anyway, since confederation it's been treaty after treaty after treaty, landclaim disputes, constant commercial/traditional hunting and fishing disputes etc. Basically they were never integrated at all with society, largely due to the racist views of the European settlers, partly because they wanted to retain their ways. It was a doomed operation because they were naive to how the Europeans operated, and the Europeans took advantage of that.

One of the more disturbing occurances was the institution of the so called "residential school system" where native childred were taken from their families and "Canadianized." Mostly this consisted of molestation and physical and psychological abuse. This pretty much disrupted an entire generation of native children. The "residential school system" was aventualy abolished, and the children were returned...

Jesus... makes me rethink my whole stance on the subject.

[edit]

Took the happy winky face and canada joke out of the top of this post. ****in depressed now. Screw Canada.

Personally I think we should get rid of Indian reservations...

Just as soon as we get the hell off their land(the entirity(however that's spelled) of North America minus Greenland), put every resource we plundered from their land back in the ground, and pay them in women and children for all the lives we took from them via warfare and the spread of deadly illness.

Oh, and don't forget, rebuild the environment that we so ignorantly polluted with all of our toxic waste, we'de have to make that sustainable again in order for their lifestyle to revert to the way it was.

I'm sure they'd be more than happy for that arrangment. :D

BTW, I have no Indian blood in me.

Sign of a true Canadian.

Government wants to keep the image but doesn't want pay more then they have too, and not just in terms of money. It would be interesting to hear the "off the record" conversations about this whole deal. That caledonia thing was pretty out of hand, I don't think that it favored anyone.

Ha! Not sure if that was sarcasm or not. Most BCers would say it wasn't.

I hope someone went to jail this time... The government is such a bunch of wusses, with any crimes committed in the name of "native rights" the chances of sentences being handed out are bloody slim. I doubt there are investigations for any of them... not that there needs to be. It's not like the perpetraitors hide who they are; they know they aren't going to jail.
