What do you think of this?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody I'm posting 2 links on articles written by a russian team doing research in genetics. The articles are quite opinionated but I'd just like to know what ppl think of what they are saying. Are they just talking jargon to cover up the fact they are wrong; if they are criticising mainstream views in biology, or is there some substance to their argument?

The links are shown below, I would be very grateful for replies, as I placed a simliar post in the Physics section named Quantum evolution and haven't got many.

I made it through most of the first article. Then I turned to the Literature section to see what their background is. Whatever it is, it's definitely not in genetics.

As to the "proof" they are giving to back up their ideas: their main source is someone, who claims to have invented a machine that can transfer genetic information in the form of some kind of "bioelectric field" from individual to individual. According to our authors, he created a hybrid of a chicken and a duck with his machine.

A quick google search was pretty revealing: it did not return any publications by this person, nor any descriptions of his experiments by others than our authors and the like, nor any patents, nor any kind of biography, nor anything else to show that this person actually ever existed.

So here's my verdict: it's complete nonsense wrapped in lots of jargon, preferably used out of context, to cover up that they have no idea what they're talking about.

No I'm afraid they lost me at "holographic memory of a chromosome continuum". :) And they go on to say that "information is ...transferred (plays out) throughout the entire space of a biosystem by the polarization code parameter." Lots of impressive long sciencey-sounding words, but not a clue what they're trying to say. There was some mention of "sign wave functions" - I presume they mean 'sine' wave...? And something about DNA having wave duality...

They did get one basic thing wrong early on though. They say that the subject of genetic coding is "an impregnable bastion for critics". They point out that the principle of DNA->RNA->protein is called the 'central dogma', and they think the name means that no-one is allowed to disagree with it, despite the existence of things like reverse transcriptase, which can make DNA from RNA. Well science doesn't allow dogma, the whole reason for naming it the 'central dogma' is for the opposite reason, it's kind of sarcastic, to remind ourselves not to take it 100% for granted all the time.

Edit: Ah I guessed they'd get round to prions eventually (everyone's favourite). Nonsense I'm sorry to say

I can understand your skepticism but I just did a google search on one of the resaerchers named Peter Gariaev, and found lots of information about experiments carried out in Moscow and Toronto.

I found a more detailed article on their experiments too I've shown a link to below.

Despite the nonsense they are claiming, "Central dogma" is, although not often used today, really an official term.

abskebabs, the articles and links you provided place our authors firmly in what is in my eyes the most irritating group of New Age devotees: the branch that insists to "prove" their ideas by abusing scientific research. Now I don't think there's anything wrong with New Age belief in itself. People should believe what they want to believe, as long as they don't hurt others. But any belief should be treated for what it is: a religion.

Lets have an illustration of how they try to scientify their beliefs. Suppose I believe that bathing in yellow light has healing properties, and that I want to prove my claims. So I do a quick search and find a scientific article about how sunlight makes plants grow. "Hey", I say, "See, this is my proof, because sunlight is yellow too!"

Of course, such reasoning is nonsense, notwithstanding the fact that the data I used are perfectly sound.

I read the same kind of reasoning in the articles and links that you posted. Only it's not sunlight, but quantum effects that is used as "deus ex machina" to "prove" their belief in paranormal healing, ESP, channelling, and whatever.

Ummm two of the links that your quoting are hosted on servers owned by cults.

Rialian ha ha

The other two sites are newage mumbojumbo.

There are good reasons why this stuff doesn't appear in more better known sources of literature.

I think its a fair point you're making, but do you think that these guys from the Institute of Control Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow are actually New age devotees. Or is it work done by them has been taken advantage of and exploited by promoters of the New age belief system.

Is the work that has been carried out in Toronto and Dresden just some new age joke too? If you haven't seen them already I'll display the people and addresses of the places below.

Oh by the way you're wrong there. They don't do any research in genetics. Just skim over their references and you'll see that they contain no research articles on the topic they talk about. The only couple research articles they have in their refereces are on unrelated topics. They just make this stuff up as they go. There is no factual evidence to support this whatsoever. Meaning it's not science.

Everything they write comes right out of their ass. They just use big and inappropriate words to confuse their reader.

I've placed links below to this, but I do regret the fact that babel fish isn't translating it.:-(

Very much so, that's why I commented on "fancy names" in my previous post.

I know, it's tempting to actually believe all this stuff, especially because they wrap it up so prettily. But think of the harm that could come from it: "You have cancer? Don't go to hospital, they've got it all wrong, but instead buy my machine!" Again, there's not a thread of proof for their claims.

And that's going to be my final words on this issue. Take care now, abskebabs!

The BCS is the qualifying body for IT professionals in over 100 countries and was set up by the royal charter in 1984. Also the Cybernetic machine specialist group is one of 50 of its[surprise, surprise] specialist groups. I don't think therefore you can just write off these organisations as "New age" groups that want to sell you a supposed machine to prevent you from needing hospital treatment[for example].

You're making the mistake of basing the ligitamacy of their work on associations. Not to mention an association that has nothing to do with genetics or research, a qualifying body for IT professionals, don't make me laugh. That has nothing to do with genetics research, might as well have just said they all had yearly passes to disney world. Which is a respectable ammusment park.

The work should speak for itself. Forget associations. Why not just read it, see if anything they say is actually backed up or endures scrutiny. Then make up your own mind and let that be the end of it.

Thats what I've done, and these are the factors that tell me it's bullshit.

1) No evidence whatsoever for anything they claim.

2) Deliberate contorsion of language and missuse of words including invention of countless new phrases with the obvious goal of confusing the reader.

3) All references of their own work are from meetings and completely unaccessible. Thus NO PUBLICATIONS.

4) All quality referenced material gives no support for their theories.

5) All their work hinges on the existance of a so called PLR spectroscopy which as far as I can tell doesn't exist outside of their documents. Plus this spectroscopy is supposed to measure quantum interactions that don't exist outside of their documents. Does this not sound completely obsurd to you????

There is a reason why you don't hear about this stuff. Because when they try to submit it to a respectable journal that just get laughed at.

That's all I'm going to say. If you're going to be fooled by their missuse of words and ideas that's your concern not anyone elses.

Goodness Peter you must have had real problems publishing if your desparation to defend your work extends to chasing up every person who makes any slightly negative comment on an informal internet forum, of which the members are mostly students. The only "harsh words" I said were that what was written on prions was nonsense. Having got a PhD in human prion protein folding from Imperial College, London, I absolutely stand by that. Tell it to the peer reviewers mate.

I would be shocked if you were to tell me that all this work was faked or made up to back up some new age mumbo jumbo. I've found some more work by one of the researchers; Peter Gariaev and he's forumulated his own theory...

...It's probably unlikely but does anybody know any russian by any chance?

No shortage of theories, especially in an information era, a digital age and, while that does throw some more interest on the scene, it certainly does clog the arteries of the verifiable to a fault. Of course, people spend every effort to fortify whatever they're pushing, and not just in the interest of foulplay/'idle hands' but well meaning, misled curiosity. It does make the wading through it all to get to the actual value a bit of a trudge but no way around it, only shortcuts in being, well, reserved. You did reserve judgment, you brought it here in curious question, so you're on the right path.

There are any number of translators, Google Translate is decent, if I remember, correctly, though I did have some trouble last time I used it. There's a site translating tool as well, probably many, but I can't recall a name, searching that oughta do it well enough though.

Uh..and apparently I had pleasure of timing in meeting with the bottom of this thread exactly with our heady friend, Illul, here, lol.

P.S, abskee

Meant to suggest you go have a good long look here in the Speculations and Rational skepticisms forums, having a look around the trash bin couldn't hurt either. I mean it will familiarize you with just how difficult it is to manage through all that trudging I mentioned.
