You guys talking about 5 kn of lead are crazy, a few feet of steel is sufficient protection from a direct nuke. (see the USS JFK or NORAD)

 

Are you willing to put your life at risk on that? NORAD is based INSIDE of a mountain, therefore it is more than just "a few feet of steel". As for the USS JFK, I guarantee you that it would be vaporized if hit directly with a nuke.

Yup... its like saying it would survive in the sun for a few seconds. Not to mention steel is not really a good radiation blocker anyway... even if the shield survived you'd be dead.
