Energy in cells

energy is required by proteins in cells to carry out many process. For example, proteins use energy to change shape and signal another protein.

 

Examples: G-protein signalling

 

They also use it to produce a chemical reaction and either produce or breakdown a chemical.

 

Example: production of fatty acids probably uses energy.

 

Energy is generally stored in the form of high energy bonds in ATP

Energy is usually stored in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate, IIRC which is an adenine nucleoside attached to three phosphate groups.)

 

ATP is pretty much required for everything from photosynthesis to respiration, it's needed to power the sodium potassium pump. ATP is often converted from ADP or AMP, and vice versa. There are countless varieties of kinases that facilitate this process.

Energy is actually usually stored in the form of sugars and fats. ATP is the intermediary and there is a tightly regulated ratio of ATP/ADP at any given time in the cell.

 

By storage I meant that ATP was the energy currency for cells. Because the phosphate bonds in ATP contains a high level of energy. The human body has a about 0.1 moles of ATP, yet we consume ~200-300 moles a day. Meaning that it is heavily recycled.
