The modern alternative, in a digital society, to the medieval "sealing wax" is the digital signature:

Unfortunately barely used by ordinary people. Therefore hackers can pretend to be friends and family while conversation by e-mail and send malicious content or links to malicious websites. A common route of infection for politicians and businessmen (mostly as experienced in computer science as ordinary people).
