Mysterious Havana Syndrome

(I did a keyword search,  thinking this might already have a thread here,  but found nothing.   If SFN already has a thread on these apparent attacks on US Embassy staff, mod can fold this into it as an update.)

WASHINGTON — As many as 200 Americans have come forward to describe possible symptoms of directed energy attacks, part of a wave of fresh reports that includes newly identified incidents around the world, Western officials say.

A U.S. official with knowledge of new potential cases of so-called Havana Syndrome said a steady drumbeat of cables has been coming in from overseas posts reporting new incidents — often multiple times each week....

There are aspects,  regarding motivation, that are baffling.  If they are deliberate attacks,  what's the goal here -- removing specific persons that foreign intelligence doesn't want around?  General harassment?  Impeding embassy operations for some political goal?

If it's some form of surveillance, why keep using a method that makes itself so obvious,  so lacking in stealth?   And which would likely  prompt embassies to bolster their EMF shielding and move safe rooms?

Sometimes the bully gets their power bc people fear them, not just bc they always win a proper fight. I believe this is about saying to diplomats, “it doesn’t matter who you are, where you live, or which country you represent… we can and will harm you whenever we damned well please.”

The curious thing is that nobody has yet detected the putative microwave beams. Though I see there are now some devices being deployed in an attempt to do that.

Yes.   There's an element of "what aren't they telling us" to all this.   If it's microwaves,  has anyone's lunch burrito been mysteriously reheated?   Seriously, the "hearing a loud sound" symptom made me wonder if the attack could be acoustic, but then you would expect more effect in adjacent offices and something being picked up on audio recording devices in the building -- sound has a way of bouncing around.

Indeed. I would have expected a technology-worshipping nation like the US to have been already all over this like a rash, with acoustic and microwave sensors for all frequencies, in every embassy and consulate across the globe.

If there's an embassy (or such like) anywhere in the world which is not swept regularly for "unexpected" RF emissions then they deserve all they get.
You can get a "bug detector" on eBay that will detect power levels a million times less than those needed to affect people.

An update:

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence agencies cannot link a foreign adversary to any of the incidents associated with so-called “Havana syndrome,” the hundreds of cases of brain injuries and other symptoms reported by American personnel around the world.

The findings released Wednesday by U.S. intelligence officials cast doubt on the longstanding suspicions by many people who reported cases that Russia or another country may have been running a global campaign to harass or attack Americans using some form of directed energy.

Most of the cases investigated appear to have different causes, from environmental factors to undiagnosed illnesses, said the officials, who say they have not found a single explanation for most or all of the reports.

Instead, officials say, there is evidence that foreign countries were not involved. In some cases, the U.S. detected among adversarial governments confusion about the allegations and suspicions that Havana syndrome was an American plot. And investigators found “no credible evidence” that any adversary had obtained a weapon that could cause the reported symptoms or a listening device that might inadvertently injure people.

One more conspiracy theory to add to the list, then?

Long list.  I was going to say this will be disappointing for the Red Menace crowd, but then realized the fringes will only believe it with more fervor.  The government won't tell us the truth about the Russia brain-cooker beams...
