not the kind of person you would think starred in one of the biggest cases troubling America at the time

The part of this story which stood out to me was her deathbed confession that she actually supported access to abortion for women. For most of her entire life, she was paid by the anti-abortion crowd (sorry, I can't bring myself to call them pro-life given their general feelings to other policies after birth occurs), but she was paid by groups like Operation Rescue (called for "any means necessary" to stop abortion) to speak against abortion.

So, she went around being the poster child for restricting abortion access even when she supported allowing. It's too bad she waited until she was dying to openly admit this (not that it necessarily would've changed anyone's views since they're so often recalcitrant on this cultural wedge issue).

She was playing a game for money and attention but, in the end, she wanted people to know where she really stood. Not an inspiring story overall.

Reminds me of Linda Lovelace, who was responsible, with her movie Deep Throat, for bringing porn movies into mainstream, back in the early 70s.
( I remember going to the movie theater on Pine St, In Niagara Falls, New York, to see it. in 1978 )
She found Religion in her later years, and was a spearhead for the anti-porn movement, when she could no longer make a living doing porn.

A lot of people put a 'price' on their 'moral' values.
( leave it to me to bring all discussions into the 'gutter' )

To paraphrase George Carlin, her thrust was to prick holes in the stiff front erected by the porn dealers.
