Diethyl ether substitute for crystallization?

Hi,

I have benzocaine base and I want to convert it to benzocaine hydrochloride.

The method I have is to dissolve the base in diethyl ether in one beaker, and in another beaker mix 37% hydrochloric acid with acetone, then combine the two beakers to initialize crystallization.

HOWEVER I do not want to use ether because of the safety aspect.

Is there something I can substitute for ether? Ethyl acetate perhaps?
