PeggyLuXXX Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Hi everyone. Why does Putrescine Hydrochloride in ‘Salt’ formation not emit an odour? Does it have to be activated by something additional to make it have an odour? Thank you. Lin.
chenbeier Posted December 3, 2019 Posted December 3, 2019 The odor comes from free Aminogroups. In the hydrochloride the amino groups changed to ammonium, what has no odor. You have to add some hydroxide and the odor comes back.
BabcockHall Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 You might give some thought to volatility.
PeggyLuXXX Posted December 5, 2019 Author Posted December 5, 2019 (edited) Hi guys. Thank you for your reply. Could you advise me as to whether adding Potassium Hydroxide to Putrescine Hydrochloride (Salt Form) will cause it to react to release the odour? Also, if the formation of the Potassium Hydroxide were flakes, should a fluid be added at all such as H2O to activate it? Thank you. Lin. Edited December 5, 2019 by PeggyLuXXX
chenbeier Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Dissolve the Hydroxide in water , then add some drops of the solution to the Putrecinehydrochloride.
PeggyLuXXX Posted December 11, 2019 Author Posted December 11, 2019 (edited) Hi there. I attempted this and it emitted no odour. What would you suggest to me? Thank you. Lin. P.S.. In my original post I said it was Putrescine Hydrochloride but it’s actually Putrescine Dihydrochloride. Does this make any potential difference? chenbeier Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 You have to add until solution gets alkaline. Maybe heat up a little bit.
