Why is there no forum for (insert field here)?

Recommended Posts

i think there should be a syntax help subject for people that are trying to learn some basic programing to ask what the error is in their syntax

People should know how to figure that out from the error message their compiler gives, and that should be far quicker too. Having a whole forum for asking about syntax errors is like begging for people to let us do their work for them. There might be an occasional syntax error that might be worthy of being discussed on a forum, but really most are quite trivial.

Well bless your heart DH, for a moment I thought you were harmless. May I ask, what is a "meritless, free thinking idea", unless you are referring to those who try eating an ice-cream cone through one of their eyes or forehead. Am I to assume you are angrily, one of them? Edited by rigney

Please post all such queries here, not in a new thread.

Several people on the forum have been defrocked, deported, banned, beheaded and the like, for violating forum decorum. Descriptions as to why they have been banned are vague to me and don't ring a bell. Is there a glossery, or small dictionary somewhere that I've missed, explaining such violations and degrees of punishment? I merely want to get a better understanding of things. If there is one, please tell me where. Thanks. Edited by rigney

The more commonly violated rules are #5 and #10 (listed in section 2).

Hijacking threads is taking over the discussion on a topic different from the original post, which violates the "stay on topic" rule; this is often done in the context of discussion a crackpot idea. The latter violates two principles laid out in the rules.

Not engaging in discussion, aka soapboxing, is against rule #8. This is most often violated by people who declare science to be wrong, and when confronted with evidence simply repeat their claims.

I hope that logical fallacies, flaming, plagiarism and sockpuppetry violations are easily understood (as well as porn and spam, but we don't bother to log those. There would be no time for anything else.)

Hmm. What sorts of science/math history discussions do you envision us having?

I don't know how it would develop, but I am interested in the work of mathematicians and scientists during the second world war. In particular, I would like to know which mathematicians and scientists were members of the Nazi party. Teichmüller, who was probably the first to apply differential geometry to complex analysis was a member, for example.

Am I overlooking an introduction forum? Well, maybe this'll work.

Hola, I'm addicted to science and have learned obscure stuff in many fields from both physical and social sciences. I have a full profile if you google Mitchessay, at myspace [hey, you don't have to log in to read it!]. Boy that place has changed since last Fall. I can't even find the forums, from my login, anymore. I was cursing last night! But back on topic....

I've gotten a bit jaded on cosmology over the years [sorry] and of course, most everyone else is tired of climate dynamics.... So I only occasionally get motivated to write something. But this looks like an open, fun place and I'd like to try. "Underwater suspension tunnels" has been a fun and interesting read, and there is some climate discussion --so that is encouraging.

Hope to see you around....

I think a forum where different scientists can post and debate they're different theories, hypothesis, and inquiries would be nice.

If they are part of currently accepted paradigms, post in the appropriate sections. If it contradicts current paradigms, post in speculations.

My English is not good enough to express properly what I will try anyway here.

Adding a subforum for the science of how investigation/research should be conducted, strategies, proving fakes/truthful documents, hoaxes; proper chain of thought to discern/find/disprove something; sort of proper scientific detective work methods in order to succeed.

It is something that lucid minds possess innate, but could be shared or learned.

I'm not super active here so I'm unsure if this has been asked before, but I've noticed the lack of social sciences and economics as part of the forum list, and wonder if there are plans to eventually add those categories.

I understand that social sciences and economics is not considered to be "hard science"--however, the quantitative approach has made those fields more rigorous and demanding, and with the "splash" effect economics has had in the past decade or so (like "econophysics"), on other fields, it'd add to the engagement and activity of this board, to have boards for those subjects.
