Life on earth violates the second law of thermodynamics and that's a fact. Why are you specifying "evolution" as opposed to, say, anything else that produces an increase in complexity such as "sperm + egg = fully grown adult human"? Presumably he saw it on a Creationist website and just believed it because he doesn't know any better. (Ironic for someone who has frequently raged against the idea of god.) DNA/RNA is bombarded by cosmic rays all the time, damaged in random way, causing mutations. If damage is fatal, cell is dying. If damage is non fatal, cell can survive. Cells which have useful for survival changes are spreading mutation further to the next generations. Radioactive isotope of Carbon C-14 is becoming part of body, part of DNA/RNA, and when it decays, it also causes random mutations/damage.
