  1. A reminder that we do not delete accounts. You may choose to leave, and you might be shown the door, but your posts remain. We generally only remove posts from sight when there are rules violations involved.
  2. I don't find them very useful. The last time I used them, I regretted it. I thought about reverting it. Then I saw another member already had. I don't think I'll used them much, except on account of uncivil behaviour.
  3. Easier for whom? You can just not come to this site. Or you can ask us to ban you. Those are your options. That seems pretty easy. The first one requires you to literally do nothing. What won’t happen is that we let people delete accounts, which would remove their posts, and wreak havoc with existing threads.
  4. I cannot post any attachment, I have overpassed my attachment quota. How can I delete some of them? Thx
  5. I couldn't activate this account as I used a hotmail address but that's sorted now since I used a gmail address Just to let you know, since I was confused, I'd created another account (I don't remember the username to be sincere but it's on the same IP so easy to find) so it's just 2 I have right now.. and tbh, I tried to email the staff on this email in the announcements but my hotmail account got temporarily locked cos there was apparently suspicious activity which I don't understand, so it would be easier to create another account to PM the admin which I did but that account turned out to be a mess so I decided to try to change my email.. it seems that hotmail addresses are being rejected for some reason? so you might want to check that out? Pffttt, sorry for the longish story, but I don't have any good reason to keep my other account anymore so feel free to delete it since it's against the rules anyway. Sorry for the bother.
  6. How can I edit my post ? I just now noticed that I need to delete something in my post .....
  7. ! Moderator Note I will reiterate our position: we do not delete accounts. We generally do not delete posts unless they break the rules, either. If you don't want it on the internet, don't post it. We can ban you, if you wish. That's as far as we go.
  8. Not sure about the wonky timestamps. It looks like swansont was the last to quote you, but nothing was hidden (we don't delete), and nothing was split to either its own thread or the Trash. I think the editing time is currently 30 minutes.
  9. new note to self: Don't sign up to any websites where you cannot delete your account, and where you cannot read the instructions on how to delete your account before signing up! Every web site has a way to delete accounts, and yes their posts are removed.. so what? This is just a crooked way that websites can claim "millions" of users so they can charge more for adds. Like the song goes, "Once you check in, you can never leave" very dishonest.
  10. if you delete system file 32 in your computer folders, your pc will be faster i remember getting virus on my android device ojnce, closing the tab didnt take care of the ads that kept poping out, sometimes they install themeselves and you have to go through your system files and manually delete it,its a hassle, but at least the virus will be gone
  11. Not sure where you saw this, but there are only a few situations where this is ever warranted. We'll delete a post if it's extremely offensive and might cause parents of younger members to take away SFN as a learning resource. We'll delete a post rather than suspend someone if they continue to argue against modnotes instead of following the instructions we give them to report the modnote post and let another staff member take care of it without further derailing a thread. We'll delete a post if it's strictly advertising another thread that person is trying to drive traffic to. Other than that, of course we delete obvious spam. What post are you referring to?
  12. Another rule is you can only have one account. Do you want to keep this one or the AUDI R6 account?
  13. I persistently repeat my demand. Delete my account and all my posts, please.
  14. Surely it would be an option to allow users to delete their accounts without deleting their posts and answers. I'm sure other websites manage this; it just means said user's profile is no longer viewable and their email isn't plugged into the website and linked to the account.
  15. 5/15 on https://www.scienceforums.net/topic/119001-mental-momentum-short-essays-about-mind-and-brain/, I tried to post my ideas about how our mind and brain work (exactly the same material I posted in our thread). From then on, I’ve been receiving attacks from the moderators, not on the validity of my theory, but on my person. After I’ve addressed the issue, the moderator Strange made an insincere apology. Afterward, Strange constrained his/her posts on a theoretical level, but continued to deliberately impede me to publish my ideas without pointing out how my theories are scientifically invalid. Around six hours after Strange’s insincere apology, another moderators swansont came in and posted a moderator note saying that I’m making the thread as my personal blog to soapboxing my ideas, while not engaging in discussion. swansont then said “if you think that you, personally, have been attacked, you should use the "report post" link at the top right of the post to report it, rather than bring it up here.” Finally, swansont said the thread will be closed if I continued to post my ideas while leaving others’ questions unclarified. From then on, the moderator Strange keeps soapboxing superficial questions nagging for clarification. My dear moderators, I have a question to ask you: Is this forum a place to openly discuss science, rather than a place to impose policies and protectionism? Despite that I’ve kindly and patiently replied to comments that pertain my opinions of mind, including those with very hostile tones, I’m still tagged as ‘not open to discussion’. I don’t think so. I think you, my dear moderators, only want to impose your dogmas on our members. You want all others to accept your reasons while yourselves are not open to either reason or discussion. Science talks about evidence, and here they are: The Moderator Note made by swansont were made six hours after Strange’s insincere apology, not anywhere near my post containing my theoretical excerpts. swansont, while questioning my sincerity in engaging in discussion, 1) said I should use ‘report post’ to report personal attack, and 2) threatened to close the discussion thread. Should I report the posts of mods so that every personal attack they made will be dealt with by themselves, rather than be open for all to see? But anyway, our dear mods clearly know how to delete individual posts without closing the whole thread. So why would swansont said to close the thread instead of just deleting the posts he thought I was soapboxing? Because our mods are on the losing ground in the discussion here in this thread, and they want to find a pretext to close it.
  16. You can't. You can edit your posts for a limited time - but you cannot edit or delete after that certain time. You can even change your user name for a short period after joining. But you don't get to delete your account and start again.
  17. ! Moderator Note 1. iNow is not a moderator 2. We don’t delete threads 3. Thread closed
  18. We don’t delete posts. We do hide them. I’d rather not give RC the air time, personally.
  19. Yes, absolutely we have that right. This is not run by the government, so there is no issue of free speech. You may start a blog somewhere if you simply wish to disseminate information. What you may post here is at the site's discretion. You agree to certain rules when you join, and you violated the rule regarding using external sites. Following your first post you were asked to post the details of your discussion here, as per rule 2.7. You declined to do that. Now you show up with multiple accounts, which is a violation of rule 2.9. That is why the saidani account was banned, and why this one will be, too. Your original account (ensea2004) remains active, for the moment. But since you made an account to evade a ban, that access may shortly be revoked. In light of your unwillingness to follow the rules, it's amusing that you take an indignant tone with us. Begone, sir!
  20. Registering more than one account to yourself is not permitted without administrative approval (from rule 2.9) They got approval Yes, it was banned, and I think it would be a bad idea for people to be able to look through your posts that got you banned, and see that you are active, rather than associating the marginally better posts you’ve made since your return with your current name. So this would not get my vote.
  21. Sensei is correct from a dbase perspective, but ignores the process standpoint. You’re operating a sockpuppet account. Sockpuppet accounts are against the rules to which we all agree when creating user profiles here. The ban previously executed against your other profile is in reality a ban which applies more broadly to you as a human being. The ban was to prevent you from further interactions with other human beings here, not solely to that one other username in isolation. Said another way... Technically, you’re still banned. If the staff agrees that your posting privileges should be allowed to persist, then the only logical approach IMO is to ban this current incarnation of you under this most recent user profile and to then as a next step unban the previous profile / version of you and allow posting privileges to recommence under that umbrella.
  22. Unlikely. Such column (user name) in database is the most likely defined as UNIQUE. https://www.mysqltutorial.org/mysql-unique-constraint/ https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/partitioning-limitations-partitioning-keys-unique-keys.html In that case admins would have to login to the MySQL database administration utility, and change user name column in the row of the banned account, then change the current username column to "Achilles". Doable if you have admin privileges and enough knowledge (like SQL database programming skills)..
  23. Yes. You acknowledged (but obviously didn't read) them when creating your account profile. If you feel someone is breaking the rules, use the report post feature so it can be reviewed by staff. If you disagree with how the staff decide to run things, you're under no obligation to continue posting here. Also, why is this 16 year old thread in the Maths forum??
  24. Some answers to frequently asked questions (or paraphrases of questions) that have come up in moderation efforts or in the Support forum. This will be amended as needed. 1. Someperson is wrong! Why don't the moderators step in and do something? We don't do that. The role of the staff (when acting as staff) is to enforce the rules, so we don't make determinations on who is correct. We do, however, participate in discussions as members of the site, and may weigh in in that capacity, but generally do not mix the roles of enforcing moderation and participation in a discussion. (Some "housekeeping" actions, such as moving posts to a more appropriate area, can still happen while participating) 2. Why was what I posted called a hijack? Or off-topic? The topic of discussion is set by the first post in a thread. If your post is such that it changes the discussion from what the original post(er) (OP) was talking about to what you want to talk about, you are guilty of attempted hijacking. Posting your own pet theory anywhere but in its own thread in the Speculations forum is always considered a hijack. Off-topic is related to this, but this usually arises in the context of commentary on an answer or a subsequent post to the original. Rather than continue the side discussion, a new thread should be made. 3. What is soapboxing? It's when you are simply making a speech, rather than engaging in a discussion. This is what blogs are for. 4. Why was I yelled at for copyright/plagiarism? Copyright is a set of laws that protect things that people write, and mean you can't just paste entire screeds here without permission (and simply existing somewhere on the internet is not permission). Under the provision called Fair Use, you can post small excerpts for review and commentary. Copyright also protects pictures and drawings, so anything posted here should be done with permission or under some form of Creative Commons license. Plagiarism is an ethical violation that occurs when you present material as your own. That is, you have not attributed the work of others. Whenever you are using the creative work of others, you should post an attribution and whenever possible, a link to the source material. 5. What gives you the right to censor me? This is not a public place, and we are not the government, so any such free speech protections do not apply. The price of participation here is that you agree to follow the rules. The people who run the site are well within their authority to remove posts that violate the rules. Moving posts to an appropriate section is not censorship — your words are still there. There are a number of threads where this discussion has taken place. The search function should help you find them. 6. Will you delete my account or remove some post I made? No. We don't delete accounts. If you don't want to participate anymore, it's a simple matter of not coming here. We don't generally remove posts, because doing so after the fact is disruptive to conversations. If you aren't going to stand by something you post, you shouldn't post it. 7. Where is my post? Sometimes posts/threads get moved. Though we try and leave a trail, it doesn't always happen. If you go into your profile, you can click on either the topics or posts box to find your material. If you hover over your user name in a thread, there is a "my content" link. A third option is to use the advanced search function and type in your user name as the only entry, and you will get a list of everything you've posted. 8. Why was my thread locked? Threads are locked if they are duplicates or if the staff decides they have run their course. The latter happens when the thread originator is not engaging in useful discussion — usually by ignoring critiques and simply repeating the same points over and over again. 9. Why was my post moved to Speculations? This has its own FAQ 10. I was expressing my opinion. Why are you asking me for links? This means you probably weren't merely expressing an opinion. An opinion is a personal, subjective view, but if you are asserting a claim as an objective truth, i.e. something that others must accept as truth, then it's not an opinion. And in that case, it's perfectly reasonable for someone to call you on it and ask you to support your claim. Any factual reason(s) you might have given in order to justify your opinion are similarly open to a call for a link to confirm it.
