  1. Oh man. I can't believe I didn't consider that! I guess taking chemistry for one year and no study of biology has destroyed my memory of simple term. Thanks for the help.
  2. Okay my school's bit peculiar in a way that it spends two years in AB Calc. Anyway, I think this is a waste of my time so I'm going to self-prep extra materials for BC Calc as well and take AP BC Calc if I can. How hard are they compared to each other? Is it possible to get 5/5 on BC by self-prep on additional materials like Taylor's Series and stuffs?
  3. I came across this long word in my crossword assignment. Interestingly, I can't find this answer anywhere in the book while I got all the other ones without even looking it up. Explanation: Fungi and prokaryotes that "eat" dead plant and animal matter Answer is 11 letter word which is like this: _ e _ _ _ p _ s _ _ s Thank you!
  4. This is not that easy problem but give it a try. Suppose triangle ABC is equilateral, and AF = BD = CE = 1/3*AB (D,E, and F are on BC,AC, and AB respectively). Compute the ratio of the area of the triangle ABC to that of the area of triangle made by drawing liens CF,AD, and BE.
  5. This isn't a very tough problem but then, it is not a simple problem. I think someone mentioned this already but you need to use Power of a Point Theorem. http://www.cut-the-knot.org/pythagoras/PPower.shtml Hope it helps.
  6. Before going to discuss my question, read this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/12/health/12diabetes.html Here comes my question: What do you think we should do with these people then? Without medicines for mental illness, they won't survive normally. But giving medicines for mental illness can cause diabetes, which, in some case, are even more hazardous than diabetes. Any intelligent idea? I just wanted to know about other people's opinions.
  7. Anyone made past first round this year? If so, what did you to do prepare for this?
  8. This is a very easy problem. Prove that if you connect midpoints of sides of any triangle to form a new triangle, the ratio of the area of the new triangle to the original triangle is 1:4. Remember, proving means showing for all cases. It's easy to see this is true by equilateral triangle but that's not really proving.
  9. Hi, I recently borrowed a book from local library for physics. It's called College Physics 2nd Edition by Raymond A Serway, Jerry S Faughn. I want to start studying this independently but I have no clue on how to approach it (i.e. where to start..). My official physics class is next year but I want to start early so I can get really good grades on the class. What would be good order of concepts that I need to learn? P.S. I didn't have physics before and I'm only a high school student. But I take calculus now and manage to score 100% in it so I guess I'm pretty decent at math. Thank you very much for your help!
  10. I'll probably be taking math class at local college in my senior year. I know that the best way to choose class is to contact with the college's math department but I wonder what you guys think will be a good class to take. I know some NT, combinatorics, algebra, trig, geometry, and hopefully be able to learn some graph theory/invariant sometime in future before my senior year. I personally do not like calculus much so good tip? Also, if I take class at local college, will this go as a part of my regular transcript or count as "AP" type credit? Thanks.
  11. Is this similar to how drunk people have red faces? I mean like you can see that person is drunk by the face because it's much more red than usual and it looks like the person is "HOT." I'm not sure why the temperature will be decreasing though. Dilate means to expand, right? So, doesn't that mean that blood will move faster (hence more circulation and heat)?
  12. Does stimulant means that it gives you energy? Or is it mean that you just feel happy and lalalala?
  13. This is just a hypothesis I came up during health class but my teacher is unable to verify it. Let's say you eat at McDonalds and go to get couple beers. I said it depends on the amount but my classmates said: Food in the stomach allows a person to drink heavily without becoming intoxicated. I have to disagree on this statement. I remember from movies (since I'm not legally allowed to drink so I can't test this myself ) that even you were eating some other food with alcohol, you will still get wasted, or intoxicated. I'm pretty sure this is right but I"m just curious.
  14. For #2: WLOG, let ABCD be a quadrilateral. Let AC and BD intersect at E. By the problem, we know that [AEB] = [bEC] = [AED] = [DEC]. Since <AEB = <DEC, we know that AE*BE = CE*ED. Similar argument gives AE*DE = CE*BE. Solving for AE in both sides, we get AE = (CE*ED)/BE and AE = (CE*BE)/ED. They're equal so: (CE*ED)/BE = (CE*BE)/ED --> CE*ED*ED = BE*CE*BE. Simplifying, ED^2 = BE^2 and since this is the side of the figure, we know that it has to be positive and can take square root so ED = BE. Solving for other variable will also give AE = CE. Since the diagonals bisect each other, ABCD has to be parallelogram. The area ratio came from the vertical angles and the formula a*b*sinC*1/2.
  15. Unless I'm mistaken, this seems like pretty elementary geometry. Just use area of the sector for A is: [math]A = \frac{x}{2 \pi} r^2 [/math] where [math]x[/math] is in radians. Maybe some Pythagoras but as some other people posted, it's not very difficult I think. Ha.. I love pie and pi.
  16. I'm one of moderators of this international math forum (largest online in the EARTH) http://www.artofproblemsolving.com This site is rather dedicated to pure problem solving than college courses but it does have forums for college level and international forums (i.e. forums for Spanish people, etc..)
  17. I hate my health class.. These questions are NOT found in my book. Argh. 1. The first stage of alcoholism is characterized by a) malnutrition b) defensive behavior c) rationalization of drinking behavior d) reverse alcohol tolerance 2. A major factor in traffic accidents, homicides, and suicides for 16 to 24-year-olds is a) alcohol use b) smoking cigarettes c) affiliation with gangs d) psychological disorders My guess: C and D are obviously jokes. In small towns, there are no gangs or "mental disorders" that's just ridiculous. I'm guessing it's A but I'm not *100%* sure. 3. Becaue alcohol dilates blood vessels, a person who goes outside in cold weather after drinking risks a) blood loss b) blood clots c) low blood pressure d) hypothermia Thank you!
  18. 1. A condition in which fats build up in the liver and cannot be broken down. 2. A condition in which liver tissue is destroyed and replaced with useless scar tissue. I know that the two answers for above is fatty liver and cirrhosis. But I don't know which is which. It's so confusing. 3. Physical and mental impairment resulting from alcohol use. --> is this intoxication? 4. The KIDNEY oxidize(s) alcohol to form water, carbon dioxide, and energy. --> I'm pretty sure this is false because I think it's liver that does this. Help! I appreciate this greatly.
  19. Recently, I read from the journal (forgot what. It was in library) about alcohols. Alcoholism is a chronic disease that can be cured. I know, heard, and learned that there are rehabs which help people about quitting alcohols and coming back to the normal life. But I don't think alcoholism is never "cured." I mean, only reason that those people do not drink is because they're afraid of what will happen if they start drinking again. It does not really "remove" the desires to drink. So, I don't think alcoholism is something that can be cured. Is my argument true or scientifically, alcoholism can be cured?
  20. What are the good schools in PA (I live there and I want instate colleges if I can) I know: UPenn PSU Bucknell Lehigh Drexel I heard Ship is decent but that's too "easy" college for me. Any others? I'll probably consider my major on chem, bio, or physic so yeah.
  21. Is this true? A person's metabolism can affect his or her blood alcohol concentration. I know that if you have more fat, you'll get higher BAC than person who is skinnier. But I don't know if metabolism plays a role in this. What do you guys think?
  22. My school only offers AP Calc AB.. I would like to have AP Calc BC credit if I can but I wonder how hard they are. Share your opinion here. Thanks.
  23. I'll be taking physics next yer as a junior in my school and I wonder what are some good books for it. I have no knowledge of physics so I prefer basics. Also, how hard are AP Physics? I don't think my school offer it as "class" but if it's not TOO hard, I think it would be nice to have AP credit on it before going to college. Thank you.
