  1. I think people like Prager are more likely a source of the problems than a solution to them. America is made up of Conservative and Progressive forces, the balance between them is what makes us great, when one wins out we all loose in some way. Almost all internal crisis have been generated by a lack of balance, neither side is capable of governing competently, only by seeking a balance do we have a chance of staying great.

Other countries where there is only one point of view are almost by definition less than capable of allow a person to be great, with out great people you do not get a great political system. It doesn't mean great is always right but the possibility of greatness has to be there before greatness can occur. Sometimes great is Conservative sometimes it's Progressive but it's always above the mediocre.

  2. iNow, once again, original and thought-provoking. Well done.

    Agreed

I don't know if I quite agree with this proposal. It seems to me that true faith uplifts an individual and can change him or her, sometimes from an abject state to one where they are very useful to society. So giving life, by not taking it does not apply.

I disagree, depending on how tolerant your beliefs are the fear of being rejected due to some imperfection in your self is quite real, religion only gives life if you follow it "religiously" even a small discrepancy means hell fire. Religion only gives life to those who follow it and keeps all the faithful fearful of failing in some small way.

Religious believers are more ready to face death after cancer etc... because they have faith in an afterlife where the ego/personality carries on after death. The fear is removed, not held like a Damoclean sword over the 'captive'.

    .

I don't see it, no matter if i have cancer or am falling from a plane death will take me kicking and screaming like a cat being forced into a toilet, the lid will have to be kept down hard >:D

True faith communities are helpful and charitable to each other. There should be no isolation because of church, synagogue, mosque etc... interactions between people.

    .

No they are there to make sure no one steps out of bounds, much like the sword of Damocles, step out of line and the faithful are there to slap you back into place.

The threat is terrible suffering after death. I remember a 'Sopranos' episode where one of the made men experienced death in hospital and was sentenced to going into a bar every night. The hellish bit was that it was Irish Night, every night!

Still religion creates that fear and allows you to avoid it only by following certain rules just like a captor rules his hostage.

To be a bit more serious though, I have never seen people more motivated except by a carrot or stick. IMHO it is universal in human nature. What better way to regulate behavioural excesses than the threat of Hell?

You can't be serious, you only behave because of fear of punishment? Simply behaving like you would like others to behave if you were them isn't enough?

  3. if accelerating an object adds mass because you have to apply energy to it, shouldn't decelerating an object also add energy to it? lets say you doubled the mass of a partical by accelerating it, wouldn't decelerating it double it again?

  4. They are quite adaptable as far as water temps go and even water quality for that matter. They are not as hard to keep as i had been told but I think they are going to be rather boring, very little personality so far. The require an open tank with no decorations to speak of, i have them in bare tank with a fine sand bottom. They will require a very big tank eventually, these will probably end up at the college in alcohol after I am finished with them.

  5. A week ago i received some baby paddlefish from a breeder I know. they are very shark like and so far fairly easy to keep. here are some pics.

Sorry about the focus, i can't seem to get my camera to focus on them correctly.

  6. I think it should also be pointed out that the "Big Bang" is not with out it's detractors. It is not the final word, if at some point the evidence points in another direction does the new theory become blasphemy and any who believes it gets shortened? Mixing religion and science does neither one justice.

  7. I bred fishes, color is often associated with sex. One of the easiest fish to bred is gambusia, the males will turn up black or mostly black in one out of a variable number but in most environments it's 20 or 30 to one (I think) stressed environments produce more but when you breed for the trait it almost never turns up in females and what few black females it does turn up in often die of tumors. I would think your trait "B" is sexually transmitted and your "B" males are either sexual mix ups or not really genetic males.

What species are you working with?

  8. I'm not sure but I would think that ball bearings are not exactly made of the best metals for making magnets. I know you can indeed buy spherical magnets, not to mention about every other shape. If I was going to do it I'd make a very strong DC electromagnet and heat the ball bearing to red heat and let it cool inside the magnetic field.

In the Earth currents of molten metal create the electrical fields, it's not like a permanent magnet.

  9. No, most drug deals are just a few dollars, it makes far more sense to legalize drugs and actually control them than it does to try and lock everyone up and destroy our monetary system to stop what is ultimately a crime that only hurts the people who break the law.

Our judicial and penal systems are so passé in this country that nothing will make a dent in drug traffiking other than absolution to include the Catholic version of: "Last Rites". And this, to both the offender, and the offender. Same thing should apply to Rapist, Habitual Thieves and Murderers. Don't get me wrong folks, this is only a thought? But our prisons are overrun and have simply become Rest Havens, "Snicker Joints" and a place for criminals to convalesce, while getting ready to commit more crime; and at our expense.

So you think people who do drugs should be killed? Or is it just the people who sell them? making criminals out of other wise solid citizens is not the way to control drugs, many of the drugs we fight came into being only because recreational drugs are illegal. Things like meth or crack were created to get around drug laws (meth is easy to make) and make it easier to smuggle due to crack being concentrated.

Draconian Drug laws drive black market forces that just exacerbate the situation.

  10. Ok, I think I've been misunderstood here.

The reason I linked US law is to show that the basis of "incest" requires a blood relation. In some states they also include 'step' family but the original definition of incest is that of with a blood relation. Drinking someones breast milk does not make you related, not even technically!

The point is that these clerics evidently disagree with you.

Secondly, why is dispensing or partaking of breast milk being even considered adulterous? It's not even close. If I drank it during a sex act, then yes but otherwise it's a natural thing, and there are many ways to express milk without any physical contact between expresser and expressee what-so-ever required.

No one has said anything about drinking breast milk being adulterous, did you read the original link at all? I've drank it, it tastes like vanilla ice cream, i prefer it direct from the spout :D

This is a womens rights issue that has been fought for even in todays society the right to breast feed in public (and yes thats a different topic) but from the comments here (and this law) it appears for some reason that a perfectly natural and normal occurance has been demonised to make it something that it absolutely is not. I do agree its a bit strange, but, that's social conditioning because mothers milk is normal. In fact it's full of important anti-bodies, is far more digestible than cow/goat/sheep/soy milk requires no packaging what so ever, no processing what so ever...in a society focussed on sustainability this 'product' is a sure fire winner.

This has nothing what so ever to do wih the OP.

  11. My take on this that it's religion, religious laws don't have to make sense, you just have to follow them to keep from being punished. I wonder what the punishment would be for the people who commit both incest and adultery? In a real way I think this the religious leaders trying to do something good within the confines of their religious writings and failing miserably.

The idea that seeing a woman unveiled is wrong stems from the sexually suppressive dogma involved, men can't control themselves around women so the women must be protected and in the process women are subjugated even more by the idea of their own sexuality cannot be allowed to influence men who have no self control...

To me the idea that men go nuts at the site of a woman is crazy to start with, I am a nudist, I've spent lots of time naked in mixed company, I've been asked many times by non nudists how i can stand to be around nude women and not just jump up and try to have sex with all of them, the non nudist often says he could not be around nudity with out loosing control, it's total BS of course, after the first few minutes of being nude you realize very quickly that nudity does not equal sex.

IMHO it's a huge crock of denial

  12. With modern technology to safeguard privacy and protect against identity theft, there is no reason why we couldn’t put an end to illegal drug trafficking, whether it be international, interstate, or on school campuses. Why we haven’t seen this proposed before is beyond me. All we have to do is institute a worldwide cashless society by eliminating cash flow facilitated by paper bills or coin as the means for monetary transactions. Again, with modern technology it should be a snap!

So you would stop all private transactions of cash to stop people from using drugs? How about alcohol and tobacco? Far more people die from alcohol and tobacco than illegal drugs, almost 30 to one.

    http://drugwarfacts.org/cms/?q=node/30

Secure servers are already available, and if all commerce was only facilitated by means of monetary transference through electronic personal debit or deposit transactions, there would be no way to exchange drugs for monetary gain without it being accessible by authorities or account administrators. You couldn’t “sell” a drug on school campuses for a cash gain! Any exchange of goods for monetary gain could only be transacted by means of making an entry on a secure electronic server of goods sold with an electronic transfer of purchasing funds.

There are easy ways around this as the Captain pointed out.

This would not only put an end to illegal drug trafficking, it would virtually put and end to all theft, whether stealing personal property, embezzlement, or robbery. There would be no reason to steal personal property, or anything else, because there could be no monetary gain. There would be no way to exchange what was stolen for monetary gain without making an entry that would be accessible by authorities. You could steal a few TV’s, but you can only have a few in your home, so what would be the gain? The same for purse snatching or pickpockets, there would be no cash to acquire!

You could also legalize drugs and stop them being from being sold by anyone other than special stores like ABC stores here in NC. You'll not see many bottles of jack Daniels being sold in schools or moonshine either because it's easier and legal to get it at the liquor store. Anyone who gives drugs or alcohol to minors would still be in violation of the law.

Even with no cash I think the barter system would still allow people to steal and profit by it. You are assuming everyone is honest and no one wants stolen property.

The demand for recreational drugs is immense, i have no doubt some one would find away around this big time.

  13. You are of course correct inow, sadly most people will not read far enough past the headlines to get the real story, life on titan would be really cool >:D but i wonder how difficult it might be to confirm, how do you actually look for life at the temps of titan, do we have the ability to do much more than say it might be?

Unless we are talking complex life (even then it might be difficult to get real evidence) detecting life on Titan would be a nightmare i am sure. How do you send a microscope to another planet to see microscopic life forms that will be close to impossible to find even if we were there in person.

I have a feeling that until we are there in person this will remain speculation.
