  1. One thing that has become apparent after watching the Capital be over run by insurgents seeking to tear down our government is that across this great land a great many towns and villages are missing their Idiots...

Arnold Shwarzenegger said in his emotional video clip yesterday that American democracy is like this Conan sword he's holding, that US democracy will get stronger with each tempering (Capitol raid) just like this sword gets stronger with fire and water. It was a very good video and much needed in light of current events but he forgot about one crucial thing which renders his clip a scary cliche - the sword is a movie prop.

I'm in the bay area, not that sunny, but orange trees grow in peoples yards!

  6. Hi guys, I am in sunny California where oranges grow on trees in people's yards and evidently it never really rains! I flew out here to see my son and grandchild and help them get their house upacked and set up.

My dad died days before I arrived andIfound out I had inherited al of his properties... Sort of... But he didn't leave a will so everything is in "probate" and all his properties will be sold to settle his debts and I have to make sure this gets done.

I named my son executor of his estate, my son volunteered btw.

I feel like I went on vacation only to find the sword of damacles floating over my head.

    Fun fun in sunny CA!

  7. Bad news, my step mom suffered a home invasion, not only did they beat her up they burned down her house. Onlookers were able to drag her out of the house. To make matters worse my dad died, I'm having problems getting information at this time since my step mom and my dad were my only source of info...

      Moontanman,

Sorry to hear of your loss and the invasion of your stepmother's house. As long as there is breath in a body and a will to carry on, people inevitably do...

We can only give our good feelings to you and I will pray for your troubles to decrease.  Please realise that there is always light at the end of this tunnel.

      Keep hope alive!

  11. Does anyone on here know anything about riding lawn mowers? I have a craftsman Lt1000. last time I mowed the blades wouldn't disengage and the lever went loose. Now it will not even turn over as though the blades were still engaged and I can't figure out how to fix it. Any ideas out there?

    1. zapatos

      zapatos

I once had a pack rat chew through the wires that monitored whether or not someone was sitting on the seat. Since there was no signal that I was indeed on the seat, the lawnmower would not start as part of that standard safety feature. Fixed the wire and all was good with the world.

I will put that on my list, shade tree mechanicing lawn mowers is not fun.

  13. I started riding motorcycles in 1970, dirt bikes, a yamaha 125 enduro lasted almost two years of hill climbing, and tearing through the woods and hills of WV but i tired of that and i wanted a street bike. A RD 350 yamaha bought by working for a year at a local grocery story provided the funds and and i enjoyed "cafe" type racing throughout all the little twisting roads  that snaked through the mountains and I thought I had the world by the tail until one day i saw this on the cover of a motorcycle magazine. I still have that magazine encased in plastic for all time

     https://www.motorcycle.com/features/archive-1971-yamaha-gl-750.html

I worked as many hours as possible hoping to one day own that beautiful motorcycle but finally I got tired of waiting and bought a Kawasaki 900. I thought I'd never forgive yamaha for not producing that motorcycle but I forgave them when the yamaha 1100 midnight special became mine.

But I still dream about what it would have been like to have thrashed the curves on a motorcycle, that at the time, was close to 5 years head of everyone else in nearly every way. Just before yamaha decided not to produce a street legal version of the bike, opting instead for the TZ 750 road racer it was rumoured the production bike was going to be a 1000cc two stroke 4 along with reed valves, fuel injection, hydraulic disc brakes and liquid cooling, all this in 1971!...   Sadly my dream never came true but I still have my baby in my dreams.

      Janus

For that range, you can use the estimate of  L/Ls = (M/Ms)^4,  where Ls is the luminosity of the Sun and Ms is the mass of the Sun.   75% the luminosity gives 93% the mass.

    3. StringJunky
    4. Moontanman

      Moontanman

Thanks @Janus, it surprised me how fast luminosity drops off with such a small decrease in mass. Can the life time of the star on the main sequence be figured from the mass being 93%?

Well I am back, just now got my ISP back along with tv and phone, still lots to do for clean up. I just posted to my blog about the storm, a bit stale now almost three weeks in but still relevant.

      http://blogs.scienceforums.net/moontanman/2018/10/02/hurricane-florence/

The days without power were a bitch, lost all my food in the freezer and refrigerator. House was brushed by a large tree falling,  blew away my privacy fence, took down several trees in my yard. Fruit trees took a beating, I lost a lot of fish, flooding ruined my freezer. All in all it was a crazy three weeks..

  23. My cousin Jeff Stewart died this morning. Jeff was more than a cousin, he was my brother in so many ways, the way only a real brother can be. One of the few people I have ever known who was basically a good person no matter what situation he found himself in. It's difficult to wrap my head around the fact a world can exist without Jeff in it.
