I noticed NF had picked it up this week.  I had a trial sub to whichever streaming service had it about a year ago, watched the first season and loved it.  So am looking forward to catching S.2.  Have been a Tudyk fan since he accidentally ingested hallucinogens in Death at a Funeral, and I discovered Firefly.  He is a great comedic talent.  As is most of the cast of RA.

  4. Guys, I need some help, power went off last night and when I went to start up pc it wouldn't Come one. It said the cooling fan wouldn't start up so the computer couldn't start up. I am getting ready to take it apart and see what is going on. Any tips as to how to proceed?

Where in the wide world of sports would I buy a cooling fan locally? Am I likely to be biting off more than I can chew or do I need to take it to a repair shop?

    Any hints/tips will be apreciated.

Interesting, I just cleaned up the heatsink and replaced the cpu fan. I didn't remove the heatsink from the motherboard and the fan was just screwed into the fins of the heatsink. The heat sink was full of fluff and dust but a vacuum cleaner and a soft brush removed all traces of the stuff on the fan and heatsink.

The fan will not run despite turning freely, I thought maybe the fan frame was being torqued out of shape when I attached it to the heat sink but I made sure it still turned freely. I guess i could have received a bad fan, I'm not sure how likely that is.

I am still amazed at how empty the tower was, it's been a good ten years since I worked on a computer, maybe that is why there seemed to be so little "stuff" in the tower.

Spare (dispensable! i.e. with non-important data) SSD 120 GB with a fresh installed (i.e. "just now", from scratch! just before use!), is always a good idea. If you were infected ("the main system") by novel virus, no antivirus will find it, and you don't know what kind of backdoors were installed on it (if it was truly virus/hacker attack).. Viruses/hacker attacks disable antivirus and firewalls. They can do that because they gained admin/root privileges.

It is better to not too accustomize with an operating systems..

I am swapping Linux 4 times per year, and in between there are special "erase all to permanent zero", one per month or so..

Learn how to backup entire browser (cookies etc.) from file system.

It should be in hidden folders:

      %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local

      and

      %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Roaming/

      (both are important!)

Copy them from Linux Live pendrive to another device e.g. pendrive.

This way you can even use web browser data (logged sessions) from Windows on Linux machine, and vice versa, if you did everything properly.

Copy them in an appropriate places on a new fresh system..

You need to create Linux Live pendrive first, somewhere (obviously not on compromised machine!)

      https://www.kali.org/docs/usb/live-usb-install-with-windows/

(Linux can read Windows NTFS files and folders, even without admin privileges, attempt of reading Windows NTFS folders on Windows, which are only accessible by admin, will fail)

Most people are never ready for "Winter is coming".. You don't know when winter is coming.. Unlike true winter which is pretty regularly (so people started making food for it)..

Damage of disk, this way or another, will happen sooner or later..

Thank you for your advice. Sadly that is far outside the realm of possibility for me at this time. I think the problems i am having are a senergy of a bad mouse and unused files cluttering up my computer. If it is a virus as you say then I am screwed but I know you guys will miss me.

Thank you guys, Phi I didn't realize until yesterday i was focusing on the date. The past few days have been full of panic/anxiety and depression. A full blown panic attack almost had me go to the emergency room thinking I was having a heart attack or something. Everyone keep telling me it will get better but it only gets worse. I still expect her to walk into the room at any time. I still think to tell her something I've seen or heard that was interesting. We shared so much it's difficult to even consider we can no longer share.

Vat, you make a very good point, she did keep me more or less on the straight and narrow and I miss her companionship, 46 years of marriage is difficult to get past. I've even been asked out by women recently but I still feel married and could see no way to do that. My own behavior has changed, I've become combative, easily irritated and very much unsure of myself.

Know what you mean about still feel married.  I simply cannot imagine remarrying if I were to lose my spouse.  There is some terrific Samuel Johnson (?) quote about remarriage, but I can't dredge it up atm.  Some guy is delivering sheetrock to our driveway, so I have to go get it in before it rains.

  12. I watched Avatar... The Way of the Water last night... or should I say Moby Dick on another planet? Wonderful CGI technology but evidently future humans are so evil the universe should be hoping for an early Nuclear War. What is the plot of the next Avatar based on? Maybe they'll step up and go with something more adult like Between Planets by Heinlein, Ooo Ooo Ooo I know! How about Oliver Twist? Naw too complex.

    2. Moontanman

      Moontanman

The cgi was great and hints at some wild possibilities, the John Varley trilogy, IMHO a great story but until now impossible to make, would lend itself to this type of cgi quite well. Sci-fi in general would benefit with this technology. But this movie was... not much more than a retelling of Moby Dick and not really well done either.

The first movie was sweet but just a retelling of Pocahontas, the CGI and the idea of what an alien planet might look like was great but some of the portrayal of the aliens was "sweet" instead of realistic.

The shifting of the necklaces of the females to hide their "almost" breasts was sweet in the beginning but became distracting and comical as the movie went on.

The females either should have not had "almost" breasts or they should have shared the modern taboo of not exposing them, would bra tops have been such a problem for cgi? The constant "accidental" covering of the breasts became silly at best as the movie went on. In the second movie it became annoying as hell and just made it more difficult to suspend disbelief of the sci-fi setting of the movie.

I thought the idea of a world wide AI controlling the ecosystem was kind of unique and made it interesting but the willy nilly method of the AI intervening seemed contrived to me at best.

Let's talk about the over the top evil of the humans and the unobtainium of both movies, the first one was difficult to swallow but not impossible to conceive of. It was easy to assume the "people" of earth stumbled across such a thing and it's value in their technology was enough to justify mining and shipping it to earth.

But the stuff obtained from the alien whales? They arrive ten years later and within a year they find an immortality serum in the brains of "alien whales" and have a complex system of obtaining it already set up?  This just beggars the imagination to think they discovered it that quickly.

Did they set about the slaughter of native animals immediately when they arrived the second time looking for something of value to justify star travel? The method used to obtain this substance would have required a technological base already in place when they landed. No justification for this was even hinted at.

The Red Planet by Heinlein would have been a much better story and a good way to display the CGI tech.

In fact the entire operation seemed to indicate they already knew about the immortality serum before they arrived, screw the unobtainium that allowed for the tech that got them to the planet, lets kill something and see if we can find an immortality serum.

I think the whale theme was meant to be a tear jerker for little kids but it detracted from the story line and made suspension of disbelief even more difficult. I write better than that or at least more subtilly. The entire story was about as subtle as a slap in the face with a dead fish.

Such a wonderful possibility wasted, let us hope this technology can be applied to better movies in the future.

  14. I had a personal experience tuesday morning at about 05:00...

I was driving to the Walgreens pharmacy due to an intense sinus headache, planning on buying some Nyquil. I knew I was sick but all of a sudden i became severely nauseous and stopped the jeep to get out and lose my cookies. I woke up lying on the pavement beside a huge puddle of upchuck, i looked up at the sky and saw the beautiful stars but I was too weak to get up.

I was on my back in the middle of the busiest intersection in my city, I slowly got up and scanned my surroundings. I was in the middle of the intersection of two 4 lane streets, strip malls and street lights all around me where shining bright... but no cars, no humans, nothing but neon lights and sodium vapor lights as far as the eye could see!

This was one of the oddest experiences I ever had made even more surreal by the total lack of other humans. Suddenly I felt like i was at the start some sort of apocalyptic Science fiction movie. Really strange, As I slowly stood up to climb back in my jeep I thought how great it would be if a cop showed up.

It was weird! I used to spend a lot of time fishing at night and coming and going to the beach at all hours of the night and I never saw the streets this deserted. Wilmington, NC has 117,000 people, the county has 229,000 people including Wilmington, not exactly metropolis but it seemed like no one was home the morning of the 1st.

    3. Moontanman

      Moontanman

I've seen the Maco light, several times, I do not know what it was but reflector it wasn't. I always figured it was some kind of electrical phenomena associated with the RR tracks. Not everyone could see it even when others did. It was weird enough to make a sceptics hair stand up... it did mine.

I often wonder if it would still be there after the tracks were taken down but the area is lighted now with street lights and no way to see such a dim red glow with the lights drowning everything out.

To be fair the amount of lighting in the area seems more than a bit extreme, I wonder if the light has something to do with that. It was nearly 50 years ago now but if I remember correctly a news crew managed to film it once but that could be wishful thinking on my part.

I have a couple of "proprietary" methods of insuring crayfish breed out of season, every 28 days to be specific. But these self cloning females breed continuously with no need to trick them into season.  No need for males either and none appear in the clone's broods.
