  1. My wife, Nancy, passed away the morning of the 16th in her sleep. I am lost, I don't know what to do, I keep thinking I'll ask Nancy what to do then it hits me again.

Well awesome! Also thinking that you probably made the right choice, considering how much demand there is for anesthesiologists.

That is an atrocity and will only lead to an black market beans. I think it is time to get an espresso machine.

  5. I met another one today. An intelligent, normal looking guy, physics PHD, worked in CERN, no wife no children, no financial problems, convinced he's a looser, depressed and on the virge of suicide. Morons run around this world happily smiling knowing everything and valuable people are dying out in front of us. WTF is happening.

  6. Anyone here watched Grave of Fireflies? Just watched it for the second time: forgot just how brilliant and completely devastating that film is. Studio Ghibli is several orders of magnitude better than Disney.

For small children I would definitely be careful with (off the top of my head) the above mentioned Grave of the Fireflies (maybe ages 10-12+), Princess Mononoke (gore and violence), maybe Nausicaa (bit of violence), Castle in the sky (ditto). And there are many movies that are certainly boring for small kids, such as Only Yesterday or From Up On Poppy Hill which are clearly not made for children as an audience in mind. It is clearly up to debate but they are clearly not sanitized as Disney mo...

I am not sure about that of many of the Ghibli movies. While many are suitable for children, some are decidedly too violent or deal with adult(ish) themes. Even movies which are about children have a tint of nostalgia to them, that is markedly absent in Disney.

Disney seems to be mostly aimed at children (though the first part of UP was good storytelling). Ghibli seems to be geared towards the child in adults. It often shows conflict and joy that we really only appreciate with hindsight.

Totally unrelated but I always find certain types of classification funny that were apparently derived from the marketing section of MS companies (HR vs accurate mass, MRM vs SRM, etc).

Penny stocks are one of the riskiest segments you could invest in (and particularly rife with scams). Some casino gambles have better odds.

If you do short term investments there is a far better chance you end up with losses, instead.

  13. I overheard a particularly incompetant colleague of mine tell another student that you 'learn through mistakes,' just now. Whille I believe the statement to be true, if all you ever do is make mistakes (as he does), then have you really learned anything?

    1. CharonY

      CharonY

D-K does not necessarily prevent someone to learn, though. It just means that the person incorrectly assess own and other's competence in a given field. Coupled with an inability to learn is quite devastating, though.

And/or you learn what the mistake is in the first place. If all you do is mistakes, there is a learning opportunity there, too. Whether one takes the lesson is another issue.

Yes I was being facetious and tried to use an amusing example. Setting up the bench in a certain way just did not have the same ring as a ritualistic sacrifice, but would look similar to the observer (and blood was actually involved).

Now that is just silly. Serious attempts at anything worthwhile requires ration planning and execution. Now if you'll excuse me, I have an important experiment and have not conducted the proper sacrifices yet.
