  1. farsight what about the other 3 bosns which don't have an antiparticle?
  2. can we keep the freedom from tax though? I always enjoy the stories of ships going out to seea and slashing cigarrette prices by 75% and such, with the oceans carved up then none of that will happen anymore, alo you have to look at the potential for nations to block access to other nations ports by virtue of denying transit through they're waters.
  3. the problem is that bush is a good ole free market guy who thinks the government shouldn't touch the economy. In a way it makes sense for him not to pump money in. In a purely free market the only thing that keeps investors responsible is the threat of losing all of their money. for instance if the government bailed them out then their irresponsibility woulld have still paid off in a big way. Also where would the government get the money to bail these guys out? odds are it would come out of the national debt which actually is about equivalent to printing money. So bailing out these companies won't do that much to help the dollar. The problem with china is that they own 1.5 trillion dollars of our debt, and they are holding that over our heads so that we can'treevaluate they're currency and thus make trade a bit more equal between us and them.
  4. out of cuiosity what would the space tie diagram look like for an object travelling back in time through a wormhole
  5. depends, in my oppinion if there are ways of eventually proving it then it could be science, however I wouldn't spend to much of my time looking for it. however as one example you could take the search for gravitational waves, there have been multiple searches that haven't turned up anything, but that can be blamed on the experiment. similarly I could make an experiment designed to find simulation noise, but I might not be able to get to the required level of acccuracy and precision required to find such noise.
  6. not neccessarily tre, if we were a simulation you would expect to see certain artifacts of the simulation develop, for instance there might be certain minimums that would defy eplanation, and also simulation "noise" while the theory could never be falsified it could be confirmed.
  7. bentheman couldn't you interpret the frame dragging of general relativity to be stirring space-time? I'm not advocating the idea from above ohwever it does make sense that the higgs field should be attached to gravity in some way, because either the equivalence principle must be innaccurate or the higgs field is responsible for giving something a gravitational "charge", as I can't think of any other mechanisms in the standard model responsible for giving a strong, weak, or electromagnetic charge to those fields, it would be odd to have this effect be present only for gravitational charge and not for any of the other fields.
  8. yes but is there any theoretical explanation as to why a massless particle travels at C, and not say .5 c, I know that if that were really the case than the speed of light wouldnt be what it is, but is there any theoretical reason as to why c is c?
  9. the problem jackson is that if you look at the geologic record you will see that the co2 level has spiked fairly egularly over the past few million years, the temperature rapidly rises in response, then the world plunges ino an ice age. that is concrete evidence that the earth's compensatory mechanisms are insuficient.
  10. without math there is no way to show that the model is wrong, for instance say that I have a box, with some device pumping air into it, and one device consuming the air, will there be ir in the box when I finally open it? the problem is that i could argue that the air is pumped in faster than it is consumed, or that it is being consumed faster than it burns, but in the end I can't prove that this is true one way or the other. however if I have math I can explicitly show what state the box is in. While being a blatant strawman I hope this illuminates you as to the difficulties of arguing a theory without math.
  11. erm wild erroneous speculations aside, a photon travels at the speed of light because thats the only speed that it can travel at, which is related to the fact that it lacks mass. I believe that there are some more theoretically satisfactory explanations, it would be interesting to here from some of the particle physicists on the board.
  12. hmm I have a feeling that jackmuchabas just used babelfish. jackmuchabas what language you speak? if babelfish doesn't like that jackmuchabas what language do you speak?
  13. well for arguments sake you could say that the higher levels of water will lead to more rain which will thusly remove the CO2 and other pollutants from the atmosphere faster then they would otherwise have been removed, thus it would be like having a filter in the box that got bigger the more pollution there was in the atmosphere. However these points are made moot when you look at previous cycles in the earths climate that show tha these effects cannot negate the increased levels of CO2 fast enough, the temperature rises, and then hits a turning point where the temperature suddenly and quite dramatically falls to an ice age level. the current climate models also demonstrate that GW is real and will continue with the rise in CO2 levels, without sudden and rapid change we are going to have to deal with large scale famines, and refugees from places which are going to be underwater, or will lack sufficient resources to feed people.
  14. hmm I remember that a few years ago somebody predicted an energy dependant speed of light in Variable Speed of Light theory or VSL, as far as I know they didn't reference any string related approaches, is it possible that we could observe the spectra and have it only indicate an aleration to the lorentz transformation and in turn GR?
  15. I think w=f[z]'s post was just supposed to be a joke at the theory of everything, physicists act like everyone else, we just have different hobbies. also I don't think that transformers is avery good source for information on science, however even without hawking radiation a black hole would not expand to destroy the universe. infact even with hawking radiation black holes easily have a lifespan of over 10^60th years depending on mass.
  16. So I pillaged an old oscilloscope (vintage 1930's-50's) from my highschool physics department years ago and finally got around to taking it apart, I've found that it contains 1 very large transformer (about 2x the size of a powerful microwave transformer, and about a dozen 12 MFD 400 volt dc capacitors, a number of vaccuum tubes and 2 picture tubes, one being a conical tube with a diameter in the end being about 20 inches. It also has a host of other goodies inside of it, and I'm considering what use to put them to. My current list of possible projects includes, a tesla coil an lectron based interferometer that could possibly be used to conduct a double slit experiment. A coin shrinker or possibly a device capable of creating a powerful arc between two contacts. anything else? I've worked with high voltage before, so that isn't a problem, however I lack the expertise in circuit design to repurpose these devices into the circuits that I'm pondering. does anybody have info on these devices, prefferably schematics and or documentation which would enlighten me to the circuit design? I'll be sure to post lots of pictures once I'm done.
  17. geoguy I take it that you haven't been to the US to discuss this issue at all, nor have you even taken a count of the americans on this board who don't support the war. Or the approval ratings of mainstream politicians. or the generally held oppinion on the Iraq war as illustrated by the latest polls. You also don't seem to be offering up any suggestions, if there was a clear way to stabalize Iraq than the military would immediately pursue that course and be outta there next month. The problem is that nobody really knows what to do with the place at this moment, and as such the prevalent logic is to try and force stability so that the Iraqi's have a moment to structure the country rationally rather than out of fear. Unlike vietnam we can't just leave and expect that the country will turn out ok (even if there isn't a government that we like) if the US pulls ou of Iraq tomorrow there will be a genocide, like the ones that you constantly see protestors demanding that we intervene in. The problem here is that when the Us steps up the protection to stop the violence between ethnic groups, they end up being attacked. the only solution that has worked to correct these situations in the past is to break the country up into several smaller portions, such as what happened in kosovo years ago. However there are actually UN sanctions against such an action, and there are heavily mixed regions in between the predominately sunni/shia/kurdish areas. Thus meaning that any breakup of the country would lead to situations such as what appened in northern Ireland, or parts of Israel etc. Personally I wuold say that the only effective solution at this point would be to say to hell with the UN break up the country, provide aid for those people who need to move, and to make baghdad a neutral zone. Then leave US soldiers along the borders of the 3 seperate states for the next several years, where they would function to prevent war between the seperate states, then have a phased withdrawal over the next 10 years. (the majority of troops could be removed far sooner than that).
  18. also the OP mentioned the kerr solution, which is general relativiies solution to a rotatiting black hole, the solution actually demonstrates that a rotating black hole actually has a toroidal event horizon, along with a ring like singularity. Also if I recall correctly there was another solution to a specific type of black hole which demonstrated two event horizons
  19. this is off topic, but jackson in almost everyone ofyour posts you mention social engineering by the government. Can you please clarify what you mean by this as I have a hard time taqking you seriously when you mention that. as far as carbon emmissions go hoever from the various omputer models that have been ru it seems clear that the measures that have been put forward so far are a drop in the bucket as far as GW is concerned, and as such we need to do alot moe faster, its now technologically possible to sequester the carbon emmissions of coal fired power plants, the US government should mandate that future plants use this technology. and the UN should focus on getting eveloping nations to adopt this technology as well
  20. actually the tactical situation in Iraq is very similar to the tactical situation in south vietnam, where the insurgency (why do we keep calling it that anyway, they're not insurgents anymore) substitutes for the vietkong an enemy that blows up random buildings, and occasionally occupied a village or two. That is exactly what we have in Iraq, The US like in vietnam could hands down win every single major engagement. The problembeing that there will never be a final battle. Even if we sent in 500,000 troops to completely seal the borders of IRaq so new weapons can't get in, the resistance knows howto make EFP's which are capable of piercing the uparmored humvees and striker vehicles, these devices can be made cheaply and with stuff you find in a grocerystore. BEsides that how long could we maintain a troop level that was capable of stopping almost all of the violence. The answer not very long, and the problems would return the moment we departed.
  21. I would imagine that a iron core would be beneficial but I don't know the application. also you should know that the strength of a solenoid is dependant on the current not the voltage right?
  22. pioneer, that is true the emmissions of various toic chemical has been reduced dramatically, however if you consider that a cars still emit the same amount of CO2 then the argument isn't valid for certain kinds of pollution.
  23. it should also be noted that nationally giuliani is the frontrunner for the republicans
  24. agreed, skepticlance doesn't mention the first persian gulf war which was an utter success, and that was led by the US. also the bay of pigs was not a US military invasion, it was a invasion that was heavily supported by the US. If the US had at anytime decided that we would oust kastro, we could have done it within a few days, what happened after that would be anyone's guess. In korea we had a total victory until the chinese intervened, and there again the US could easily have provided more troops/ bombings in order to beat the chinese, but we didn't want to risk a wider conflict with china and possibly the soviet union. Vietnam demonstrates that it is no longer possible in the modern era to occupy a country, as Iraq is also currently demonstrating.
  25. that is true however there can be many other factors affecting that statistic, such as the use of other substances, and most importantly the genetic pre-disposition towards schizophrenia. the studies that I have seen on the link between cannabis and schizophrenia focus on those with a family history of schizophrenia, in which case it appears that those who use cannabis are more likely to devolop schizophrenia than those who don't in that specific demographic. If you assume that this demographic is somewhat fixed then the rates of schizophrenia would not rise exceptionally with an increase in cannabis use in the general populace. the link between the two is still very new and requires more study however it is not something to be ignored.
