  1. then tell me what's the use of those sites offering free numbers

if everyone goes legally then those sites will be of no use

These sites can be very useful. I purchased a game a few years ago and have the cd-rom's but lost the serial number. I was able to use one of these sites to retrive a new one. Since I do own the game and bought it for $50.00 and could find the receipt for the purchase then doing this is ok.

But, if I would have downloaded the game on Kazza or some other p2p network and then used a site to get a serial number or crack for it and I didn't pay for the software then it would be illegal. These sites offer serials/cracks and the reason why these sites are still running is because they are not violating the law. What are they really doing to break the law? Unless I missed something, nothing at all. The peopl that use the sites may be breaking the law.

  2. everything was fine when i was using norton antivirus 2003

i bought norton av 2004 .there was no problem during installation .when i tried to activate from the activation key from cd case but it didn't work.then i tried several activation no.s from different sites but haven't got any success yet.hence i cannot still use this damn norton av.

any help will be highly thanked.

You do know you can call Symantec directly and activate the product. Also you said you purchased it on cd-rom. Isn't it already activated since if I remember right it reads the activation data from a encrypted file on the disk.

  3. What is the Difference in Upper- and lower-case extensions in Windows if any??

No diffrence at all. Most people prefer to put uppercase extenstions. On Windows it dosen't matter. The same thing also applys to filenames. You can have a file named, "iDoNtCare" and it's the same as, "Idontcare." On Linux and other UNIX like operating systems these would be looked at as two diffrent files.

  4. the command should be
    C:/windows/iexplore.exe

with c:/ being whatever HDD windows is on

That would work but it dosen't need to be like that. Try

    start iexplore http://www.scienceforums.net

I have not used the command for so long so that should work.

  5. Well, the Iexplore comand didn't work.

What did you type? It should work if you have Internet Explorer installed. I know it works on Windows 9x and it should work on Windows XP as well. I really don't feel like booting into Xp just to check that. :embarass:

  6. What, in your opinion, is the best free forum software that can be placed on your own domain name (instead of yourforum.freeforums.com, it can be at yourforum.com)?

I have had experience with most forum software. I have to say vBulletin is the best commercial forum software and PHPBB Plus is the best free forum software.

One thing I don't like about PHPBB is how you have to set premissions for each forum and stuff like that after you have created the forum. I have to say that Invision has beat PHPBB on that one.

  7. See here is an example of what I mean. Let's say the false command (a command that will always return an error message), is Firefox. I would type something like so.

[jordan@jelly-oodpyb8k0 ~]$ false #Me running Firefox, in this case false.

    [jordan@jelly-oodpyb8k0 ~]$ echo $?

    1

See how it returned an error message of 1. Now I could go online surf the Internet for, Firefox Error Message 1 or something like that. :)

  8. To me this sounds like a problem with a plugin. This happened to me with Firefox on Linux. I installed Java and was trying to get the plugin to work with Firefox. I was doing some things wrong and each time I tried to run Firefox it wouldn't run. My suggestion is to check the plugins direcotry where Firefox is installed at for unknown files or something of that sort. Maybe even remove Firefox and re-install it.

I think MacOs X is based off open darwin bsd. So you should be able to open up a shell and run Firefox and if it crashes do echo $? and it will return an error number. If the message is greater then 0 then something has caused Firefox to crash if it's 0 then everything ran fine. You can then use this error number and surf it up on Google or ask someone at the Mozilla Forums. I only have experience with Apple Script and Mac OS 8 so I really am not 100% sure about Osx.

  9. Hi ya, I am looking for a wireless PCMCIA card to run on a dell inspiron laptop under linux. i was hoping someone here could recommend me a compatible one.

I am on Linux using a Wmp54g Linksys Card and my sister is running Dell Truemobile usb card. Both of them don't come with any Linux support. I got the cards working by installing Ndiswrapper located at Ndiswrapper. It seems like tons of people who connect to the Internet using wireless cards use Ndiswrapper. If you do have to use it follow this guide -> http://www.linuxelectrons.com/article.php?story=20040507104718960&mode=print!

  10. Good' date=' got it working!

The first time I tried to install Linux it never asked for the 3rd CD, and as you can imagine, didn't work. But I was persistent and it worked the second.

Although it may be a while before I'm used to it, the layout is much better then XP.

I just have one little question though: where can I find my old F drive?

I fixed my above problem by simple using the installer for partitions. It erased my newly installed windows OS but I dont think I want it anyway. The restore CD for emachines isn't as great as a real XP CD and will probably never notice the partitions. I do have a 6G slot for it though. I'll probably add some other Linux OS instead of XP.

Anyway, thanks for all your help. A sufficiently bad situation turned into a very 'bright' outcome :D[/quote']

I think you will like Linux! Linux is a operating system with lots of power compared to Windows. Here are some things that you should know since you are new! :)

    1. If you installed both Kde & Gnome Window Managers and want to try each one of them out then when you come to the login screen hit the 'sessions' button and it will give you these options to pick from.

    -Gnome

    -Kde

    -Failsafe

Gnome and Kde are shown above on my desktop screenshots and failsafe allows you to login and perform commands to fix your system. Like the Windows Safe Mode but using the command line.

    2. If you watch video(s) and like to listen to music on Linux then these downloads are a must have!

XMMS - This program is like the 'Winamp' for Linux. It can play most of the file types Winamp can play (btw a version of Winamp is avaliable for Linux) and is a very nice media player. If you installed all of the sound and audio programs when you installed Linux (by hitting the details button and selecting them all) then you should have xmms installed. Here is the downfall. Due to possiable copyright restrictions redhat has removed mp3 support from all sound/audio applications! Fear not! You can easily download http://dag.wieers.com/packages/xmms-mp3/xmms-mp3-1.2.7-0.rhfc1.dag.i386.rpm that and install it and it will install the mp3 plugin to give you mp3 support for xmms. Now you can go to places like shoutcast and listen to streaming music. Here is a screenshot of xmms.

    screenshot3hj.png

If you watch lots of videos then download real player at http://www.real.com. Now here is another download you should have. Xine! http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ That is a link to download Xine. Just follow the instructions on that page. Make sure you download all of the codecs but not the real ones because you will have downloaded the video player from real.com. You can also check out mplayer and mplayer-plugin for Linux.

I suggest you check this out http://www.fedorafaq.org/#about. Lots of people find Linux hard at first. You will more then likley feel the same but it's something new to learn. And trust me. Lots of corporations use Linux not only on servers but for client systems as well. Putting that you have experience with both the Windows and Linux OS looks good on resumes.

Also on the f:/ drive question. If you did everything right you should be able to go into Gnome and hit the computer icon and see drives in kde you can right click on desktop, find where it says icons and have it show the drives on your computer as icons on your desktop or open a folder and on the services tab that should auto-open unless you removed it you can select 'devices and xx' at the top it has a printer icon next to it. I hope you like Linux!

And make sure to check out the Link above!

  11. partitions with linux is quite confusing. dont u have to create two partitions. the main one , and the /swap partition as well. /swap basically acts as the pagefile in windows.

No you don't have to. You can use a swapfile like Windows does. But by default Linux creates a seperate partition for /boot and / and /swap. It isn't confusing with todays graphical installers such as the one that comes with fedora. The one that comes with fedora is even nicer then the xp one. :)

  12. I debated with several distros. Behave Linux caught my eye but I eventally decided on Fedora. College linux actually looked pretty cool though' date=' I think I'm going to play around with it a bit in the neer future.

As far as installing my first version of linux, I have one comment/question:

I dont have any partisions but made references to F and I think the explinations above used the premise of me having two partitions (C and F). F is actallu another physical hardrive. If I tell windows to partition half the hardrive, is it going to erase everything of F as well? Or when I tell Linux to take the rest available space is it going to overite F? I dont think it will but I just have too much data on it to not be certain.

    Thanks.[/quote']

Nope! Make sure you don't delete the f:/ partiton or w/e when you create the partition in windows xp installer and on Linux just select 'keep partitions use free space' and you will be fine. The partitions will only be deleted if you tell it to.

  13. I dont have a labtop though...Just two emachines running a celeron.

Thanks for all your help. I'm downloading the ISOs as we speak. I can't wait till my computer is good' date=' and new, and Linuxy :D Too bad I've never install Linux before this! I remember attempting it along time ago with an open source forum that put together their own distribution (I forget the site but it was recommended by a friend who's big into Linux...apparentally he wanted me to test it or something).

I'll probably take up C++ again but with Linux instead of Windows.

Do you guys recommend any books? Not Linux programming but just the OS itself.[/quote']

I suggest you learn C first and then C++. C is far more powerful then C++ and most of Linux and Windows and all other operating systems are written in C. Linux comes with tons of programming tools and languages. Fedora comes with

-gcc/g++ and Java support if you install that

    -TONS OF NICE IDE'S

and more! :) I am glad you are trying out Linux. If you are on a wireless connection then let me know. There are steps you may need to take to get that to work.

  14. just dont rush it.... if u have a laptop there is a site to check if iits compatible with the machine. i cant remember i site i used to go to. just did a quick serach and found another good one

    http://www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html

ill edit my post if i manage to find the other one

Linux has been known to have problems with labtops. This is becomming less true as time goes on. :embarass:

  15. To install Fedora Core Three & Windows Xp

    1. Insert your Windows Xp Cd-rom and reboot your computer. Your computer should boot from the cd-rom if it dosen't adjust settings in your bios to make this action happen. If it does reboot you should see the words, "Press any key to boot from cd..." or something similar. If you see these words press any key to continue the installer.

    2. Once the installer has finnished loading you will be given three options. The first option, the option we want, should say, "To setup Windows XP now press Enter." Press Enter. You should now be asked where you want to installed Windows Xp. Delete all of your partitions accept any of them you want to keep (in your case f:) and press 'c' to create a new one. Create a new partition about half the size of your hard drive. I have a 40GB Hard Drive so when it asks me how big the partition should be I will put in 20,000 (20 Gigs). 1,000 megabytes is 1 Gigabyte. Format the file system in any file system of your choice.

    3. Once you have completed this step then install xp on that new partition you have created.

    4. Once xp is installed insert the Linux installer cdrom. Follow the instructions on it. When it comes to a 'partitions' screen then select 'Automatically partiton my drive' and when it ask you how to partition your drive select 'keep all existing partitions and use avaliable free space' and finnish the installer. I would make sure that you install all the packages on the cd-rom. Lots of applications are avaliable with the cd-rom themselfs. (On fedora make sure to select the 'details' button and check all the applications you want for that catagorey.

You now have Windows Xp and Linux installed. Linux is a very nice operating system. Fedora comes with Gnome by default and also allows you to install kde. This is my gnome desktop

    screenshot8ql.png

and this is my kde desktop all on the same linux box.

    decemberdesktop3xy.png

See the diffrence? You can pick other ones like fluxbox and others as well! I suggest you install both window managers. Since you are used to Windows Linux may be difficult to get used to at first but once you do you will love it! Did I mention that Linux has less then 100 viruses and these viruses can't do much harm unless you run them as root. Check out Linuxlinks.com the beginners section for stuff for Linux Newbies!

  16. Cool' date=' thanks.

Go back didnt work (couldnt find valid restore time). This computer also has a little problem with Windows Task Manager and several other things including some specific software issues.

I guess I’m going to copy any files on C to F (probably just my documents) then completely reinstall windows.

Can I install Linux and Windows on the same hardrive? F is just sortof where I put all my stuff. It’s very organized w/o all the other folders on the drive.

And is there any website dedicated to [i']new[/i] linux users? (I’ll probably google some but you may already know of some great sites) The reason I havnt reinstalled Windows is because of the hassle of reinstalling all of my software. Hopefully I can find similar application for Linux and just use windows for windows specific stuff. Its just that it seems like I spent along time/ trial and error getting all the “best and coolest” windows stuff, if you know what I mean, and I don’t want to spend along time searching through the Linux equivalent of Media Player, Internet Explorer, etc.

You won't be searching. Tons of programs, free of charge, are avaliable for Linux Users. If you download Fedora you can get 4GB of programs such as media players, browsers and more installed.

You can installed Fedora and Xp on the same hard drive. Just use the instructions I said above! :) Install Xp on half the hard drive and install fedora on the other half.

    Look at these Links

    http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/dual_boot_fedora_xp.php

Basically put the Windows Xp cd-rom in and boot from it. When it ask you what drive you want to install Xp on delete all partitions [accept F] and then create a new one. When it ask you, "How many megabytes should this partition be" put in half of your hard drive. 1Gb = 1,000 Mb. Then install Xp on that new partition. Then after xp install use the guide above (written for fedora core 1 but I suggest you get fedora core three from linuxiso.org) and use the guide above.

  17. I dont think any of the files I'm concerned abotu would be deleated. I dont want to go that rout simple because I've had this problem for like' date=' probably a year now.

I figure I could restore to a few hours ago before it escalated so I could check into the photohop fix. Of course I forgot the holly grail of computer fixes: reboot! I logged back in and havnt realized till now that my "computer crash event" didnt constitute a reboot. :D

So I'll reboot then if that doesnt work (probably wont) I'll restart again but stop at the go back screen. Maybe photoshop has been causing this problem all along.

    PS:

I tried installing linux before on F as a dual boot thing. I got a link to one OS and sourceforge just sent me to a directory of a bunch of files. I couldnt figure out how to install it though.[/quote']

If you're a new commer to Linux download an ISO File from Linuxiso.org. I suggest Fedora Core! If you do download Fedora you need to download these files.

    http://linuxiso.org/download.php/607/FC3-i386-disc1.iso

    http://linuxiso.org/download.php/608/FC3-i386-disc2.iso

    http://linuxiso.org/download.php/609/FC3-i386-disc3.iso

and burn them to a cd-rom. Then reboot your computer with the first cdrom in and install it! When you come to a screen that says boot: with the fedora logo just press return. Make sure you install it after you install Windows. This way you can still use Windows or Linux. Whatever one you want to use. :)

  18. If you use System Restore then yet it will delete some applications you have installed since your copy of Xp has been installed some may not be removed. You should just go ahead and do it. It isn't like you can't install the applications again. Other file(s) will not be removed from your system.

Also you use Xp? (cough http://www.linuxlinks.com/portal/news/article.php?story=20041214152822125

    http://www.linuxlinks.com/local/why.shtml cough) =P

  19. I have a question for the computer experts:

"whats one of the first things you do when you buy/receive a new computer?"

For me personally' date=' I format the HD. I do this because I usually buy brand-name computers with bundled hardware/software (gateways, dell etc.).

My reasoning is that these "bundled" computers come with a million "Extra" features installed which slow down the computer. I feel that a clean install does wonders for a new comp.

My gf just bought a brand new laptop (gateway). I've implored her to format the HD right out of the box. I claim it'll increase the performance of the computer, and make it operate more smoothly and efficiently. She refuses to believe me. Am I correct in my assumption? Does anyone have any references to back up my cause?

    Comments/thoughts?[/quote']

You don't need to format a computer to speed it up! If you want to speed up her computer then I suggest checking all the applications that are starting up with her computer and remove the one's she dosen't need. You can do this by going to Start > Run > msconfig and hit the startup tab. Everything that is checked is running with the computer when it starts. You can uncheck it and save. You can also do this thru the registry but this is easier for people who aren't familar with the Windows Registry. This can help a lot if you remove applications that she dosen't need from running on startup!

Then you could disable all the special effects and what not that aren't needed. Check this out http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2742 :)

  20. Today (December 15, 2004) I have been having trouble getting into my Microsoft Hotmail account. When I finally logged in, I noticed that the web site was moving very slow. When I went to my inbox I was very surprised to find messages that I had deleted. Some of them were deleted over a year ago. All of the messages were old messages from Homestead, my web-hosting provider. At first, I thought Homestead accidentally sent me all of their old e-mail messages. Then I noticed that in my inbox, the dates that were shown were all from a long time ago. Does this mean that Microsoft secretly keeps all of your e-mail messages after you delete them? I thought this was against their privacy policy. What does everyone else think about this?

Yahoo, Msn, Gmail and any other free email provider always keeps backups of your inbox. If they ever have technical issues they have that backup to restore from if needed. They should delete these backups once a new backup is made. I have a Gmail account (and am very happy with it. If any of you want an invite pm me) and on this page http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/more.html they state what I have said above.

  21. This used to happen in the past only when viewing the ‘details’ of certain video files. I used to get "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close..." but later all the explorer functions would just restart with out the friendly little error message. I guess I shouldnt have let this error go unoticed for so long but I’ve just been assuming that it had something to do with not having the ‘proper encodings’ to view the file.[sense I never use media player – VLC and BSPlayer] (I realize that the 'quick view' in the corner is obtained from the file itself as a template so my comp. is not just 'viewing the first frame')

Now' date=' explorer cashes and restarts any time I try to view any folder with windows explorer of my computer. I’ve found a couple links:

    http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:Y3l6aydAixEJ:www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm%3Fqid%3D483074+%22my+computer%22+problem+crashes+%22start+menu%22+xp+%22explorer+crashes%22&hl=en

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320563

Aparentally I need to remove Kodak. My dad does use this computer for pictures so I wouldnt dobt this explanation. However, Control Pannel is viewd with the application that crashes explorer so I cannot get to add/remove programs.

    1)

Could there be another reason to constitute this problem?

    2)

How can I reach Add or Remove Programs?

    Edit:

I just found out that my dad does not use Kodak. He knows what the software is and doesnt use it. So forget 2, I need another cause for the error to attempt to fix it.

Note: I use an emachines XP with a celoron.[/quote']

Several things could be causing this! You really can't diagnose the problem if you don't provide us with some more information.

    1. When did this problem begin to occur? After or before you installed the latest service pack?

    2. Have you installed any programs right before this problem began to occur and if so what programs.

And information such as that. I suggest the first thing you do is do a system restore. A system restore will revert any changes you made to your computer to a past date. Many people have this feature disabled to save disk space or for privacy reasons. If this is your case then maybe you should login in safe mode and check out what is running with your computer, see if programs are causing the error stuff like that.
