  1. Geez....Sorry for being curious YT. Besides, didnt you say yourself that it would only make a loud bang? And what would 2-3 (I dont even think it was that much) mLs do?
  2. well, my alcohol burner can barely boil water Edit: and i forgot to mention that i used tap water, which, here in my area, has quite a bit of sulfur in it. you can smell it sometimes when you turn the tap on.
  3. Update: I evaporated the water off of a small sample. First, roughly 2-3mLs of soln were put into a test tube. Then were heated with a small alcohol lamp. At first only water vapour was given off, but as less water was present, a thick smoke was coming out of the end of the test tube. I wafted the smoke, and it smelled kinda like ammonia, Im not sure if it is though. Usually, when i smell ammonia, it doesnt burn my nose, this stuff was pungent. Maybe it is more concentrated, I dont know. Anyways, the soln started to turn turquoise, and then yellow. I think there was another vapour given off, but i cant remember (even though it was only 5 minutes ago) I think it was a reddish brown, maybe NO2. Whatever, thanks for your help. Im going to bring a sample to school and see what my teacher has to say...
  4. Cool, thanks. Is the soln a soln of copper hydroxide then? Or of tetramine copper 2 nitrate that was mentioned above?
  5. I put some pennies in a ammonium nitrate soln, forgot about it (literally) for about a week and a half, to find that the soln turned blue. Some bits of copper remained, but the zinc and the rest of the copper was gone. There was also a white percipitate at the bottom. Can anyone tell me what the percipitate is, and what compound of copper it is? Thanks!
  6. Because I want to do it the hard way Im assuming that you used sulphuric acid? If so, what concentration?
  7. How would you go about doing that? Can you get the zinc out, and then get the copper out? Or do they come out at the same time. I just would like to make zinc powder. Thanks.
  8. Hmmm....I'll have to ask her...thanks for the info YT. one more thing tho...do you know what proportions they are mixed?
  9. Thanks for the quick reply. I was just using 30C as an example, I dont know anything that does either. Its just that my chemistry teacher used to do some demonstrations when she was younger. She said that she would light her hand on fire, and it wouldnt burn her, the temp was just like hot water from a tap. But she cant remember what it was. It was similar to "fire" eaters, whose 'fires' arent that hot at all. Some other things she used to do was dissolve Phosphorus in carbon disulfide and put it on a news paper. She would then walk in to class, set the paper on her desk, and lecture. After a little while, she CS2 would evaporate and PooF! But unfortunately, this was all before I had her class. She has been teaching for 52 years, so I imagine it was a long time ago when she did all this.
  10. If something has a flash point of say, 30C, that is the temp that it will ignite at, right? but once ignited, will it get hotter? And does anyone know of anything that burns at a low temp that will not burn flesh. also, if anyone knows, where i can purchase some. tee hee thanks in advance.
  11. Someone said that you could disolve the NI3 in water (i think) before it dries. In this form it can be "painted" onto surfaces. I tried this, but the NI3 would not dissolve in water? What can i use to do this?

  13. Thanks for the info everyone...tho i guess NaNO2 is pretty much useless for pyrotechnics... Thanks anyways, and does anyone know of a chem supply store that sells to minors in the US?
  14. So...can anything be done with sodium nitrite? And I dont mean drugs 'n stuff. I mean can it be used to make fun explosions and such. Also, could it substitute for NaNO3 when making KNO3? If so, would the resulting KNO2 be similar to KNO3. Thanks
  15. what would you recommend to add (if anything) to the KClO3 other than sugar?
  16. "then it wouldnt be a bottle of ammonia would it?!!!!!!" Its household ammonia. It says ammonia on the front, but in the ingredients it says solution of ammonium hydroxide and some other stuff. We made NI3 in chemistry the other day, and we used NH4OH, not household stuff. I was wondering HOW I would get the NH4OH out of the household stuff. I decided that in the end i am just gonna order some NH4OH off of the internet
  17. burning flesh and dismembered limbs....sounds like fun! But seriously, I think I might have to go to a bigger store, because i cannot find any ammonia that doesnt have anything else in it. Then again, going to a grocery store in a town with 600 people.....
  18. Ok, but on the back of the bottle of ammonia, it says ammonium hydroxide, NH4OH, is it not? Anyways...the question still stands, How can i get NH3/NH4OH out of household ammonia.
  19. How can I get NH4OH from household ammonia?
  20. No, i didnt boil it down yet, I have some lab stuff coming soon that i need in order to do that. But I have a funny story about boiling it down.... Before I got any lab stuff, i just used cheap pots and pans. So I boiled about 1 1/2 cups water with 500 match heads. I cooked it down and some sulfur started gathering around the edge. I was tired of waiting for it to boil down, so i added some sugar and about 1/2 cup lighter fluid, and ignited. At first it looked similar to creme brule (spelling), because the sugar camamelized. It burned for quite a while, and then the sulfer ignited...when all was cooled and not burning...it puffed up quite a bit. there was maybe 1/2" of fluid in a 7" diameter pan that was 4 inches tall. at one point in the pan, it actually raised above the rim. After that, we jokingly refered to it as the "cake". The next day, when i walked in to chemistry, my teacher asked me what did i explode...since all my friend said is that we made a "cake". Good times...
  21. Is it ok to use paper matches? and can anything be done with the strip that you strike the matches on?
  22. What I meant was... How do you extract phosphorus from urine?
  23. I read A Short History of Nearly Everything (Bill Bryson) a few months ago, and it had some interesting tidbits about Phorphorus. For instance, the discoverer (cant remember who it was) was trying to get gold out of urine. They attributed gold to the color of the urine, so thats why they thought they could get gold out of it. Anyways...it said that after using "a few recondite practices" he turned the urine into a waxy substance that ignited spontaneously. My question is... Does anyone know what these 'recondite practices' may be? Thanks in advance.
