    Animal Testing

IMM I wonder why you feel that animal behaviour indicates that they suffer but at the same time you don't think they have a sense of ethics. I think on the face of it they seem to show both responses to noxious stimuli and a sense of societal rules that are analogous to humans. Whether either of these things have parallels with a conscious suffering or a system of ethics is debateable. Indeed the links between noxious stimuli and pain, and social behaviour and abstract ethics, are tenuous enough in humans. But the same sense of empathy for animals suffering would seem to apply to animals knowledge of right and wrong.
  2. Can you do a double Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science degree? Combined degrees are popular here. You can get them done in 5 years I think.
  3. There was an earth sciences forum a long time ago that got closed due to lack of traffic. I think there should at least be a subforum somewhere for it.
  4. Jobs and marriages aren't important, people give them up all the time. Now beer, that's important, people rarely give up beer.

    the UN

Sure, but China doesn't want that to happen, stopped it from happening up to the ceasefire, and would probably be able to stop it from happening now.
  6. The good thing about message boards is that they are focused on particular topics and that you have some time to think about your replies. This means that the conversation can be at a higher level. And if it's not the posts can be deleted.

    the UN

Restraint has maintained the ceasefire that enables South Korea to be a prosperous US ally.
  8. Exercise. Exorcising is casting out demons. I'd hazard a guess it's due to blood flow. Exercise diverts blood to your skeletal muscles and away from your digestive system.
  9. It might be wise not to do supermans as in the link in post #5, as supposedly lifting all your arms and legs at once puts strain on your lower back. Lift alternate arm and leg and at time, i.e. left arm/right leg.

    the UN

Not alot, but then no-one has wanted much else to happen.

    the UN

They have lots of options. The Korean War started with UN authorisation, remember.
  13. Yeah, they are included in proteins. I think there are also some antibiotic molecules in there, plus some vitamins, minerals, aa's, and molecules from whatever nector they've been to. I guess that would be mostly plant secondary metabolites that gives them different tastes.
  14. Move to brainteasers section?
  15. I've never understood why people think the Saudi's have been overestimating their oil. It would make more sense for them to underestimate their wells, thus boosting prices and reducing pressure from the US to increase output. And it gels better with the fact that they have been able to keep cranking up output.
  16. It is not simply the sugar you buy in granules. That is just sucrose. It is a supersaturated mixture of mostly simple sugars like glucose and fructose, plus some proteins plus small amounts of other species. The actual composition varies between different bees and locations. You could 'judge' it with regular analytical techniques, gas chromatography would probably sort out the sugars pretty well.
  17. Well they already apparently had nukes and now we know one of them worked. So it's not really much of a change, they don't have any new capability. It'll probably be some time before they can stick them in a missile. What I think it means is that the US and China will have to work out what to do next. Basically they can keep things going as they are, apply sanctions or negotiate. China will find it hard to apply sanctions and the US will find it hard to negotiate, so we might well end up with a few token guestures and back to the status quo.
  18. Oh assuming the body is pure water is standard practice in electropachydermology YT
  19. A rough estimate would be to assume an elephant is entirely water, work out how many electrons in a molecule of water, work out how many molecules of water in 5000kg, then multiply those numbers.
  20. Nothing much happens chemically unless it starts to brown, then there's probably all manner of oxidations going on.
  21. Ok, I was wondering how they would 'choose' which quantum states of the atoms to entangle. It makes sense with the magnetic moment. Could you entangle other states of the atoms with other photons to store more information?
  22. Thanks YT, but the original link is working now too. Makes more sense with the link.
  23. I'm getting a Page Not Found error on the link. Just to be clear, have they 'teleported' quantum states between entangled photons and atoms?
  24. I'm not sure, but it's a theory for what's behind this years increased insurgency.
