  1. I used to have a rabbit that attacked my cat on a regular basis. The rabbit is long dead, but to this day the cat has a fear of rabbits.

  3. You could also install a crc program like http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Vista/1388/#CrcShExt and compare the two files like that.
  4. You should be able to plug a PCI card into a PCI-X slot and get it to work. Although it might slow down the other PCI-X cards to PCI speeds.

  6. I went to a private school that taught the British GCSEs (though not in the UK). I’ve been wearing a uniform since the beginning of elementary school, didn’t stop until my last year of high school. I found it quite nice not to have to think of what to wear, and what colours match. The only thing I really objected to was the way some teachers insisted you wear the blazer at all times, even if you were too hot. I’m also not especially fond of ties, since I don’t like having my collar buttoned up that high. We didn’t really have a problem with cliques. There were two major crowds in my year, but neither one was really mean to the other. The older we got, the more the two crowds mixed.
  7. svchost.exe is a valid windows process; it is a program that hosts services. There are usually several instances of it, running different services. svhost.exe is a virus or something trying to trick you by using a similar name. Or maybe you just mistyped it.
  8. If you can find a vocal only track of the same song, theoretically, you could invert it and mix it with the combined track, and the 2 voices should cancel each other out. However, it only works if the vocal track is the same as the one used in the song. You also have to make sure they are synchronized, but it can be done. It's probably a moot issue anyway since you probably won't be able to find such a track for all your songs. What's more common is an instrumental track, which can be used to isolate the voice from a song by the same principle. Also, if you own the music in the first place, karaoke is fair use.
  9. I have to say, I've tried a lot of things but the best so far has been to use a hosts file that blocks a whole bunch of blacklisted sites. I HIGHLY recommend it. The one I used is http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm (if you see a bunch of “Unable to Connect” messages in place of banner ads, you know the file is working)
  10. Always take your own advice. Aside: Why do some girls apologize after flashing a guy by accident? The funny look on most guys’ faces is one of pleasant surprise.
  11. I’m taking a sociology class at uni, and one of the books we have to read is Richard Lee’s “The Dobe Ju/’hoansi” which our prof assures us s a classic in the field. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s an ethnography about a group of gatherer hunters in southern Africa. It covers culture, religion, politics, social dynamics and ecology. I’m not sure about the arts, but I haven’t read it all yet, although I think you could build a picture of their arts from reading the rest of the book. Its been pretty good reading so far, and has kept me interested.
  12. I enjoy anime for the same reasons people enjoy live action TV shows and movies: because it’s entertaining. Anime isn’t a genre; it’s another medium for entertainment. The fact that it is part of a totally different culture can make it refreshing compared to western entertainment. There are good and bad anime, just as there are good and bad TV shows. You can’t just condemn or praise the whole medium. As for the violence, have you watched any American TV lately? Shows like CSI are just disgusting with all that gore.
  13. Whenever I’m mad or frustrated or just stressed, I pick up a novel; a little (or a lot) of escapism works for me. It engages a good part of the brain, so my mind can’t wander back to whatever it is that’s got me stressed.
  14. Could you copy-paste the output form the compiler regarding the compile-time errors? Also, I've never seen angle brackets <> in java what’s going on here?
  15. I used BlueJ for a very short period when I was just starting java and OOP, I've been using JCreator LE ever since.
  16. Ever since I saw a documentary on penguins, I’ve wondered about what happens when they die. If they die on the ice and freeze, why isn’t the ground simply a mass of frozen penguins? They can’t rot, and they can’t be eaten once they freeze, so where do they go?
  17. My dad and I wanted to take apart a parachute flare, and he figured the easiest way would just be to fire the rocket into a bucket of water and then recover the parachute and flare part when the rocket was extinguished. I expressed my doubts, but we continued anyway. The 5 gallon bucket had its bottom blown out, and the water was no where to be seen, the rocket bounced around until it got stuck and the fuel ran out. I don’t remember if the rocket went on to ignite the flare like its supposed to, but we got it out one way or another and hung in on the clothes line and lit it, it was pretty. Years later, I learned that powdered sugar and powdered potassium nitrate could be mixed together for lots of fun and smoke. My best fried asked me for some and I obliged. His mother was later looking for his cell phone in his backpack and discovered a small plastic bag of white powder. For some crazy reason she thought it was cocaine, and proceeded to taste it to find out (she had no idea what cocaine was supposed to taste like, but anyway). She called his dad home form work, and called my friend home from his girlfriend’s house. He explained everything to his mother, and a while later I received a call from her. She was mad but mostly at herself I think, I was laughing at her as she explained the story, I’m pretty good friends with his mother anyway. But it doesn’t stop there. A few days later his brother decides to make some of the mix himself, using some instructions from the internet. Rather than mixing 2 powders dry, he tried to melt the KNO3 into the sugar, over the kitchen stove. Some of the mix dried out and ignited taking the contents of the rather large pot with it. His whole family had to get down on their hands and knees and crawl out of the kitchen under the smoke, which extended about halfway down the wall (good thing the smoke isn’t that choking).
  18. I read Discover and Popular Science regularly, as well as Scientific American and New Scientist occasionally.
  19. My friend has done this with his DSL line, one line, one modem, a switch, and two computers, each connecting on a different internet account (at least I think that’s what he did). In his case each account was 512 kbits/sec and the DSL line could handle up to like 8 mbits/sec or something. This should also be possible with a cable modem, though you may need a separate modem for each account.
  20. What about all the random thoughts we think? How will the computer filter out all this noise, you’d have to have some way of turning the input device off. Now that I’m thinking about it, it is possible that the brain would learn to use the interface just as babies naturally learn to use their legs as they grow up, the computer would just become another way to interact with the world. After all, we can select which muscles we want to use, the same thing could conceivably work with a computer interface. I don’t think the technology will be feasible without directly interfacing with neurons using surgically implanted electrodes. Of course, that means people will have to become used to the idea of having surgery just to use a computer. I have no doubt that the day will come eventually.
  21. If you want to know the recommended procedure for determining if a plant is edible in a survival situation, check out: http://www.wilderness-survival.net/plants-1.php#uet A big clue is bitterness, many toxic and or medicinal chemicals found in plants are bitter or otherwise bad tasting. You can usually determine bitterness without consuming a lethal amount. Reaction upon contact with skin is also a good indicator, if it burns, don’t eat it! I imagine most animals use their sense of smell and taste to determine edibility.
  22. I don’t want to be a semantics Nazi, but people always use the word ‘sentience’ incorrectly, so I have to point it out. “Sentience is a capacity for basic consciousness—the ability to feel or perceive, not necessarily including the faculty of self-awareness.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentience
  23. The meat most people eat comes from animals that have never seen sunlight, let along green fields, they are also kept in pens so small they can’t turn around, so I don’t expect they do much walking either. As to growing meat in a lab, I think it’s a waste of time. Growing meat is inherently less energy efficient that growing plants. That isn’t to say that meat doesn’t have its place, for example, there are some places in developing countries where there is little arable land, but the land is still suitable for grazing animals (hilly areas for example), in this case using animals for food makes sense. But here in the developed word, meat has little practical function; it's a want, not a need. Vegetarian since I was 6.
  24. Try polymerizing white glue (like Elmers) with a borax solution. It makes a neat rubbery goo that is fun to play with, you can vary the consistency by the amount of borax and water you add.
