  1. Some of the holistic health advocates stress that the feeling of hunger is often due to dehydration. They suggest that when one feels hungry well before mealtime' date=' drinking water will soften up the food in the digestive system so as for nutrients to assimilate into the bloodstream and energize body functions. Water, however should not be drank after a half hour before meals, with meals, or for 2 1/2 hours after meals. Why? Because it takes up to a half hour for water to assimilate and it takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours for meals to digest. One does not want to dilute the enzymes which digest the food with water and other drinks during the meal, according to some health advocates. This seems to make sense to me.[/quote']

I had never heard that theory before, do you have citations or links for it? I'm not challenging the fact that you heard it, I'm just interested in reading more about it myself.

  2. My father and brothers also have moles in similar places on their heads, but I don't remember if both of the boys had the mark at birth or not...I know that not all moles are there from birth, it's not uncommon at all to develop new ones.

  3. The first time I took the SAT some jokester thought it would be funny to keep pulling the fire alarm, again and AGAIN, we ended up evacuating the building three times in the pouring rain, I'm still amazed that they didn't invalidate the scores.

  4. . One has to wonder why mammals lost the infinite sets of teeth of their reptilian ancestors.

    Mokele

I've wondered that too, especially for mammalian herbivore, whose teeth are worn down so progressively. I have read from several sources that the most common NATURAL (excluding human influences) cause of death for elephants is simply reaching old age with their teeth worn down so far that they can no longer eat enough to sustain themselves. It definitely seems like replacement teeth would be an advantage, but maybe that never evolved since the senescence occurs after their peak reproductive years?

  5. isn't it the oxygen? I remember reading or something that Oxygen poisened us slowly.

Wearing down our organs' date=' making us age. Anyone else know of this?[/quote']

I think you're talking about the free radicals that result from metabolism (which involves respiration w/oxygen, I honestly don't know the details of how they're released and all that, hopefully someone else does and can kindly explain it).

That's why foods and supplements with antioxidants are supposed to be good for you, they're supposed to protect your cells from damage by those free radicals.

  6. I saw a documentary on self-inflicted anorexia and those images on the websites never left my brain...

Pretty much all anorexia is self-inflicted, it's just that some people embrace the lifestyle and some truly feel they can't escape from it, it's a psychological disorder extremely similar to OCD.

But you're right, the images on 'pro-ana' sites are really disturbing. There have been several petitioning campaigns to webservers to have them banned, but none have been successful, obviously.

  7. Are planning on testing a male using the same criteria? If so, what "kind" of male (age, size, etc)? The genders have many different developmental rates, both psychological and physical, so it would be hard to find a 'control' to match your test subject specifically (and that's not even considering the very good point made about about how one random teenager really isn't representative of anything except for herself.)

  8. You're right, it can be dangerous to introduce a lot of food right away when someone is in a state of starvation, people who treat patients with eating disorders call it 'refeeding syndrome'. It's slightly ironic that your body needs nutrition desperately yet food can trigger fatal consequences because the systems are so out of whack.

I think that the word for what Hyebeh was describing about osmolarity and ion ratios is 'hypophosphatemia'. It's a big problem for treating starved patients. Here is a website with a lot of good information:

    http://www.ccmtutorials.com/misc/phosphate/page_07.htm

And here is one with a ton of information on refeeding as a whole:

  9. In most cultures' date=' boys and men are valued infinitely higher than women because they pass on the bloodline and the family name.

    [/quote']

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of any human societies/civilizations that have been matrilineal? I remember reading about one from Sumatra, but I couldn't remember the name of it. (I'm not at all disputing the quoted statement, but that's what made me wonder about the rare matrilineals).

  10. What exactly are the tests like? How long do they take, how many questions, what kinds of questions, etc etc etc? Talked my counselor into letting me take an AP class a year early (er, for next year), so I was just wondering ;)

The exact format depends on which test you're taking, obviously the math tests differ from the foreign language ones, etc. (Although there is always both multiple choice and 'free response').

All the info you need is here: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html

Just out of curiosity, what grade will you be in and what classes are you considering? I took AP European History as a sophomore and survived, don't be intimidated, the courses CAN be conquered. ;)

  11. Some weirdos choose to be anorexic. They have disgusting p2p websites for such a purpose. I'm not lashing out at those who woke up with this disorder. They don't go on low carb diets. I'm lashing out at those who have willingly decided to ruin their lives for "beauty". And in my mind' date=' those people should (and eventually will) suffer a punishment far worse than ridicule.

If you happen to be one of those people, I'm sorry. Not because I offended you, but because of the grief you cause yourself and others.

If you are anorexic and do not wish to live that lifestyle but feel compelled to do it because of a mental illness, I am deeply sorry for my post, know that it was not directed at you.

If you are neither, I hope this serves as a clarification and that I would appreciate if such "corrections" would be inserted in a PM.[/quote']

I felt the need to make the 'correction' just as much for other readers as for you, and I didn't mean it too personally because I know there are many common misconceptions about eating disorders and some people may truly believe all anorexics are just crazy, attention seeking, shallow people.

You're right, there are 'pro-ana' sites out there and they absolutely disgust me. There is no excuse for promoting that lifestyle. As someone who has struggled with anorexia for almost six years and has lost two family members to the disease, I can't tell you how loathsome it is to see people actually encouraging others to engage in the behaviors. But some people are legitmately caught up in a disease, and it's hard when they get lumped in with the 'other' people, which is why your comment touched a nerve with me.

No hard feelings, just felt the need to make a comment on it because there are so many misconceptions about EDs.

  12. Its good to hear that low carb is helping people other than crazy anorexics

Anorexia nervosa is a serious disorder, it is truly a disease and it has the highest death rate of any pscyhological condition. Be careful about ridiculing problems that you obviously have little knowledge about.

  13. Strawberries are too fruits' date=' they "contain" seeds! :D

    [/quote']

I read somewhere that the red "berry" part of the strawberry is actually a dramatically modified type of stem, with the many seeds on the surface, so that any hungry herbivore is obliged to consume them along with the flesh, instead of hiding the seeds inside a fleshy covering like true fruits.

  14. Don't stress too much. Last year I had the AP Bio class from hell (we switched teachers halfway through the year, I had to self-teach half the curriculum because we didn't cover it in class, we only did three or four of the labs, etc). I was sure I got at least one essay question entirely wrong, and was unsure of myself on some of the MC, but I still came out with a 5, it's not as hard as they want you to think. ;)

  15. Oops, I guess I'm 19 heart attacks behind schedule. Better get to Jack in the Box!!! :)

Make sure you go through the drive-thru so you don't have to subject yourself to exercise by walking up to the counter!

  16. I got her a card and candy, it always amazes me how mothers can act like even the smallest gestures really touch them. I'm glad there's a holiday for them.

Just out of curiosity, when is Mother's Day in the UK?
