      DJBruce - Can you cite an example to explain the above quote. I couldn't get past the later half of it, i.e.; "who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more".

      That quote is by Steve Prefontaine arguable America's best distance runner ever. Pre was known for having a very brash style, always looking to go out front, and set the pace of the race. This flies in the face of many other runners styles of sitting back drafting, and being content to run a slow pace.
