    Earth Simulator

Please forgive me is this isn't in the proper place....(like general disc. or biochem, or something like astro phys.). I have recently read about this super computer (when I say super, I mean super) called the Earth Simulator...I'll have more details on monday, when I am able type at leisure.....(time limit over here). But, anyway, It's capable of 70 something trillion calcs. per (either second or minute). It's called the Earth Simulator and is able to predict the climate conditions of Earth up to 1000 years. Originally, they wanted to make something that could predict the economical and ecological status of Earth in the future, so far, they only accomplished the Eco part. If you want to read about it, it was in a recent issue of Time Magazine, in the cool inventions section. Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know... by the way...what comes after terra? I know that its kilo mega giga terra ....Peta? I forget, I looked it up the other day, but now I forget... please help me out...
  3. Hi, I think that I am the youngest person here, I'm a freshman (is it "men"? or "man"), and I"m only 14 (yes, this would explain my unorthodox form of writing, and my unbearably small source of knowledge at disposal). I normally just like to post things that I think up while daydreaming during Algebra 2 class (omg...did I just write that out ...what's the word? "Text"? "Font"...mind you, I'm trying to find a synonym for "loud"....) anyway, I guess I just wanted to say hi to you all.... by the way, aman, fafalone, and ....blike is it? Sorry, real tired right now, I really appreciate your insight, I know so little, which is one of the reasons why I joined here ( the other is because I just stumbled onto it...). So, thanx....
  4. Let's take a good look at how rapidly humans have progressed. Let's say, in the early 1400's. Back then, humans believed the world to be flat (....how exactly would they know when they would fall off?) and that if you journeyed too far by boat, then you would fall of the face of the Earth. Christopher Columbus, proved that wrong. Later, in about maybe 1800's, humans have colonized just about every continent (excluding antarctica) on the Earth. But, humans don't really make a huge leap until the 1950's, when humans sent up Sputnik (mind you, I'm not too familiar with dates, so don't blame me if the dates are wrong). After that, humans were on a steep hill of technological advancement. In the 1970's (again...not too hot on dates), humans developed a computer, primitive, yes, but still, it oculd do basic calculator functions, and took up seven rooms. Now, humans have sent up numerous satellites, have propelled humans into space, and have transformed that massive seven room oversized calculator into tiny handheld processors that can fit on your key-chain. As for the computers, now, our computers can make millions upon millions of calculations per second, and we've even set up a network of computers using interfaces called "phone lines". or, the Internet. Has anyone heard about the Earth Simulator? It's a massive computer filled with hundreds (okay..maybe exaggerating there) of processors. It can calculate trillions of calculations per second, and has simulated Earth for up to ten years in the future, all the way up to thousand years into the future. Humans have made several advances through the short time of the 20th century. Now, as we emerge into the glorious 21st century, I find it hard not to imagine humans exploring different star systems, or creating great starships within the next century.... :slaphead:   :worship: :nono:  :bravo: :feedback: :feedback: :lastyear: :banme: :cool2: :owned: :uhh: :haha: :toilet: :bs:
  5. aman, you seem to be the only one to truly grasp the scope of this topic. Everyone here is seeming to forget that I said the virus thing was a METAPHOR. Maybe I wasn't clear. What i really meant was that we emulate viruses. Mimic them. Inadvertently of course, but still.
  6. aren't black holes just reallly massive collapsed super giants with so much gravity, that they collapsed upon themselves and became denser and denser? ok...maybe not collapsed (cant find good term to use).
  7. I have had the same feeling for quite some time now. Many times, I've felt waves of deja vu. It felt very strange. I could be what aman said, what with your brain traveling faster than light during your dreams. It certainly does seem logical, it's either that, or you're experiencing a temporal rift in which you seem to remember parallel versions of yourselves doing what you remember during deja vu. or, it could be a glitch in the matrix....normally happens when they want to change something.
  8. isn't gravity a distortion in the space-time continuum? I have heard talk about how gravity is one of the weakest forces in the entire universe...but what about black holes? Those are so powerful, they can even affect light. But...if gravity is just a distortion in the space-time continuum, it would be because of planets (normal gravity sources) have such enormous masses, they cause an effect on the space-time continuum. Well..if this is the case, then it may be possible to "fool" the space-time continuum, and generate a source that simulates a lot of mass. This, could create gravity. Also, I think EMP and magnets might play a major role in this too.... :D
  9. Thankyou. I was wondering how people would react to my strange theories. It's good to know that someone's listening...and you're right. I should talk about human situations...so let's talk about "human situations". ok...right now...i have no time...so you guys discuss this...
  10. When I was refering to the symbiotic relationship, I was referring to cute little animals that kill each other. I was not referring to us, humans. We're the ones ruining the planet. Not the cute little animals that kill each other (heheh....well...maybe I'm exaggerating...)
  11. Let us consider the scenario of the deer and wolves. The wolves, eat the deer. The deer eat the grass, the grass eats (ok...maybe absorbs) the sun. A chain. The wolves eat all the deer. They run out of food, and begin to die. Deer reappear. Deer, with no predators, begin to reproduce at unheard of rates. They eat all the grass...and die. The grass...well, it has nothing to worry about. However, this is not the case, as the wolves won't eat al the deer. This thus, leads to the deer keeping limits on their population. thus....the wolves have plenty to eat, and the deer don't die of starvation. This is the symbiotic relationship I was talking about. You are right though, I was thinking of somethng I was doing in science...it had CO2...it should have been CO...not thinking. ....maybe I did talk about nothing but what agent smith said...oh well. Also, aman, you're right. We are a damn smart virus....and that we do have the ability to choose what we do with our great intelligence. And yes, I do understand that animals have evolved only to know what I was talking about...yeah.   :bs: :lame: :spam:       :lame: :bs:

  13. My question is this. Are we, humans, the supposedly most advanced species on the planet, a virus? Not a virus as in something that gives you a disease. No, the virus dub is just a metaphor. If anyone has ever seen the matrix (no, I'm not going to talk about that), then you would have heard one of the characters explain that humans are a virus, a parasite to this planet. So, based on this, let us reason. Over the constant evolution of Earth's inhabitants, all the species have maintained a symbiotic relationship with the Earth. The species have come close to extinction, and yet, their symbiotic relationship allowed them to surface again. However, as humans evolved, we started migrating. But not migrating like salmon, or buffalo, or birds. We spread out. Just as a parasite spreads through the body, we spreaded through earth. Other animals that migrated, they used up what they needed, left, then returned when everything grew back. Perfect symbiosis. However, humans, we all spread out. Since we have little body hair, we are believed to originate from Kenya. However, now, we are on nearly every continent. Spreading, eating up Earth's resources. Sure, now, we've realized our drastic mistakes and are trying to recycle, and reuse, and other methods of repair. However, is Earth's damage reparable? Already, there is a massive hole in the O-zone, because of CO2, and also, pretty soon we'll use up all of our fossil fuels (ten years, maybe less). Of couse, humans will probably come up with another technological advancement, but at what cost? In less than a century, we've punched a hole in the ozone, used up about 3/4 of our natural resources, and drove several species to extinction. I'm not saying that we did it on purpose, And I know we're trying to repair it, but....will we be too late? ...I dunno. ....:flame: :sucks: :uhh: :owned:   :help:  :worship: :loser:  :stupid:
  14. I had always thought that gravity was simply a distortion of the space-time continuum because of Planets immense mass, it caused a rupture and made gravity... At least, that's what I heard...:bs:
  15. Is altering the human genome possible? If it is, has the government kept it a secret from us? Is it already a perfected technology? Basically, its possible to a certain limit while in the early stages of human embryo growth. however, is it possible to alter the dna structure of a fully grown man and/or woman? This is something that not even I can prove using simple logic. I mean, I don't think its possible. Maybe in the womb, or either during or right after fertilization...but still, this is a very broad topic, which very few people have answers to. Personally, I wish I had the answer. . But putting my original inquiry aside, let us go back to altering the human genome while in embryonic stages. If this could be done, it culd be possible to enhance the human immune system. That would be interesting, but to what effect? would it work? what are the side-effects? If this technology is perfected, then governments could create supersoldiers. (Come to think of it, I bet that there is some top secret government project out there looking into it...). But what kind of soldiers? These are all wide-ranged topics that I would love to discuss, but I have not the time. If you want to talk about it, IM me, or send me an email or something. Anyway, lets go back to my original iquiry. Altering the human genome while in late stages of human growth, after being born and puberty. But, what if it is possible before puberty? Before any major changes in hormone levels or testostorone or anything like that takes precendent? What then? and if it would be possible...what would be the dangers of society to that? (that's just a side-topic mind you). If you have any info, or a site, or anything...or just want to discuss the complexities of this subject, email me, or post a reply.....
  16. I have often thought to myself about a lot of perplexing things. They don't blow my mind, they just astound me...I have always wondered, how exactly we are able to think...to conspire...to have certain views and opinions on things. Have humans evolved to much that our mind has developed consciousness? Are we sentient beings? Or are the random thoughts traveling seemlessly through our minds just simple things that we have heard before and just happen to present themselves from our memory...But then, where did we hear these things? I can find several ways to contradict my theories on the human mind right now. Even now, as I type this proposal, I think about what to type next, and how to type it, and wondering how I can effectively write this, and what I'll have for lunch:D . All these things are just running through my mind, with no particular significance at all. But why is it possible? Let's just 'think' for a moment:-p . Dinosaurs were the rulers of this Earth for millions of years or so it seems. Humans have been rulers of this Earth for about 2 million years. After all that time the Dinosaurs had, how come their genetic structure is primitive and inferior to even the smallest of organisms on this planet? Ok, maybe I'm going overboard on that. But still. They were here for millenia of millenia. You would think that they would learn how to think...If that is what we do. In my mind I hear my thoughts. In fact, that's all I hear. It is not possible to clear your mind of all thoughts, as we are always thinking. But how? How, in less than 2 million years have we evolved to the point that we can walk, talk, and dress ourselves? We have developed hundreds of languages...we have developed complex memory, for heaven's sake, we study other animals. We cut them opoen and peer inside. dinosaurs didn't do that. no. Dinosaurs did nothing but eat and waste. But humans? No....humans would do no such thing. We even cut ourselves open and peer inside. When you think about it, Humans have evolved at a remarkable rate. We've developed complex emotion. Hate, compassion, love, only a few of these complexities that we call emotions. I guess that we feel emotions from certain hormones in our bodies. But what triggers these hormones? Pheramones? Maybe...Maybe that is all that makes us think. Hormones. That is basically what we base humanb life on. Everything we do is based on an emotion which originated from Hormones. But still, How do we pull off such complexities? We've already sent several artificial satellites into the sky. We have already developed vaccines, and cures, and a whole lot of other technologies. Maybe god just gave us a major jumpstart. He made us the perfect machine if he did...
  17. the question that dwells on almost any physics professor, of philosopher's mind is "Is time travel possible?" Well, why shouldn't it be?? We all are in fact time travelers ourselves. We all move forward in time, well, at least we all perceive to be moving forward in time. In fact, when you really think about it, we could all be moving backwards in time...time may not be moving at all. It could be stopped at the very moment that I am writing this...Of course you'll say "that's impossible, if time has stopped, how can I be reading this??" but we are forgetting the fact that maybe time has stopped for someone else. After all, time travel has a lot to do with perception. Setting this aside, one must ask oneself, what rate are we moving in time?? Like I said before, time could be moving in reverse, but at what rate? Well, the truth is that the rate of time is impossible to document, or place into any tangible form. for all we know, we oculd be moving so fast through time that it rivals light speed. One would never know however, because we are limited only to our own perception. When you really think about it...(I do this a lot by the way:D), time could have already gone by. We all could be dead at this very moment, only our consciences are perceiving it to be very slow. Time could go by in a blur, however, we have no way of knowing. This is one of those things that you really have to think about...anyway, the stereo type of time travel is walking through a portal and finding oneself in some other time, lets just say, maybe a year ago. This could very well be possible. If one could manipulate gravity so much that it would rupture the very fabrics of the space-time continuum, it could be very possible. However, I perceive time travel to be watching time go by, if not forwards, but backwards too. Then you have to work in the rate of moving forward in time at a faster rate than others. This is something I do not think is within our grasp. It probably won't be for a long time after we're all dead and futuristic philosophers are pouring over this data trying to make sense of it all. It would take serious gravity manipulation...well...I guess I'm done boring all of you. IM me or email me sometime on thursdays or sundays. That's when im on. Zeorashiari@netscape.net the name is the same for my screennames. Zeorashiari is my screenname.
  18. There is a theory in physics stating that all possible outcomes that do not happen do happen. Except in an ifinite number of parallel universes. Based on this assumption, one can arguably say that every time me make a choice with two possible out comes, we create two new universes. In example, say (you) decide to make a sandwich. However, you are perplexed as to what you want to make...(don't worry, this happens to me often too... ) Finally, you are able to narrow it down to two possible choices of food. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or ham on rye. In htis universe, lets say you picked ham on rye. However, at the very moment that you decided to make ham on rye, your parallel self from the newly created universe, completely identical to you in every way, decided to pick the peanutbutter and jelly sandwich (quite a good choice..who the heck likes ham on rye anyway?). However, it does not end there. Suppose you are faced with another choice? Like, what to drink? Since both the current universe and the newly created universe are completely identical, you would both decide to get something to drink. In this instance, its Orange Juice and Coke. In our universe, you pick OJ. However, a new universe is created in which you drank coke. However, let's go back to the universe where you picked PB&J. In one universe, your parallel self drank OJ. However, in another newly created universe, your parallel self drank coke. Thus, this would prove that you create infinite universes of yourself doing various things. But why would universes be created over such trivial things you ask? Well, why shouldn't there be? Based on the assumption that the original theory about all possible outcomes is true, then you could argue that the only way a universe would not be created would be if someone was governing time, space, and pretty much everything else having to do with universes and physics. Don't get me wrong. I know that some of you have already reached the conlcusion that one guy making a choice isn't anything compared to the true scope of the matter. I also know that some of you are going to get on me about saying "parallel". I simply used it as an example...putting my thoughts into words is not easy mind you...
  19. Let us assume that time travel has just been made within our grasp. That the entire technology has been perfected and taht we can go anywhere in time. Also, let us assume that a close loved one has suddenly expired. So, driven by rage, you go back in time using the time machine and stop the death, and change time itself. However, when time itself continued from the very point from which you changed time, when if got to the point that you eventually went back in time to change the past, you have no reason to go back, hence you never do go back, and your loved one is never saved from death because you never went back to change it. Hence, time collapses upon itself. This is very similar to the Grandfather Paradox, which states that if you were to go back in time to kill your grandfather, he never has your father as his son, hence, his son and your father do not exist, so that they can not have you. Then, you cease to exist and you never go back to kill your grandfather in the first place. Let us refer to my first scenario with the close loved one. If you were to change the past, then they would die anyway, because that is how time repairs itself. If they didn't die...well, you get the idea. But based on this theory, let us assume that you cannot change the future also. for those of you who have seen the movie "Back to the Future Part II", then you would know that the good doctor went back in time from the future to warn the main character that his child does a very bad thing. Hence, the main character travels into the future to prevent it. When time continues from this point, then the doctor has no reason to go back in time to warn the main character. hence, time collapses upon itself. but of course, time will probably repair itself and make up some other reason for the doctor to go back. either way, it is impossible to change the future or past to your own liking. Hence, we are walking a path with no turns.
