Disorder sounds so negative for something some verry intelligent and famous people have had, but I think you are probbebly right.
Yeah, I know it sounds negative. But so does any other disorder, whether it be mental or physical. What makes a person successful is that they don't dwell too much on the negatives.
Whether anyone likes it or not, everybody has a disability. What makes a disability a disorder is when that disability interferes with being able to function and live out our daily lives. It does not interfere with my life in anyway.

I have no experience in the psychology field but I would think that 'empathy' would be the single most important variable in being a psychologist. Isn't empathy what some autistic people lack or have difficulty with?
It's not that they lack empathy or emotions, the real issue is that people with Autism have a difficult time being able to interpret what other people are feeling, and other nonverbal cues. In my particular case, I am often unaware of the more subtle cues. I once took a test that measured my ability to interpret the emotions of both adults and kids by looking at facial expressions, and I found it easier to interpret the emotions of children. Unless you have something like a big, beaming smile on your face or an obvious frown, I would not be able to interpret how you are feeling. The same holds true for listening to your tone of voice; unless it is obvious, I would not be able to tell how one is feeling.
Humans are social animals. If one has developmental problems and is unaware of what it is to be a healthy mentally and social functioning human then how could one help achieve it in others?
Well, this is assuming that all people with autism live alone, when in fact they do not. They don't socialize a lot mainly because of the difficulties in being able to relate to other people. They may be seen as strange, but depending on their personality and abilities they are not completely isolated and can still contribute to society (Albert Einstein, for example, is suspected to have Autism). As for learning how to adequately socialize, its just like learning any other useful skill, we have to be taught some of them.
There's a paleontologist I met on and off over the years who had some type of disorder I never understood. He'd get fixated on a subject and research it to death..eat and sleep it and then, wham, drop it completely and fixate on something else. When he button holed you at a meeting he would talk on about his current subject and, no kidding, if you were to stick out your tongue and cross your eyes, he wouldn't notice. He seemed to have no reaction to human feedback. I could walk away from him talking to me and he wouldn't be the least bit upset or offended. Now, having said this, he was a fascinating fellow and and a lot to contribute to a subject once he latched on to it.Yup, this does sound like autism.
I could have said 'I think you're ugly and and idiot but could you explain brachiopid calcium phospate shell structure to me again' and he wouldn't have even noticed the personal half of the comment..
Well, no. If you told him that, believe me he would notice. We know when we are being insulted.

I would think as we are in a science community, on a forum and on the internet then the proportion of autistic people here would be unusually high.
Autism is not an on\off thing, there are meany people only slightly autistic, appeantly 1/3 of people experance some form of mental "illness" some time in there life.
Not exactly. People with autism can also be a prodigy in music, history, etc. It is more or less based on what their intense interest is. Sometimes their interest changes while other times it stays static and they may become experts in their interests. I have had a passion for science and math since about the 3rd grade because I am a math prodigy and I tend to be a very logical person (hence science makes a lot more sense than religion for me).
And yes, all people have some traits associated with personality disorders and mental illnesses but they are not severe enough to be considered as such.
Autism is neither a mental illness nor a personality disorder. It is a developmental disorder, but has some traits associated with OCD.
I too would be verry intrested to know more about the reserch being done into savants.

Anybody here read the book on it? I've only read a couple of pages of the whole thing, but basically it talks about the possibility of warp drive and a bunch of other technological marvels seen in Star Trek.
There is a whole lot to cover but I'm most curious about the energy requirements of Warp Drive, and of course if it is even possible. For those of you who don't know, how warp drive works is that it folds spacetime itself and this allows it to go faster than light, which is otherwise impossible because of the laws stated special relativity. Pretty much, being able to warp spacetime itself would provide a "loophole" around relativity so to speak.
Obviously Warp Drive would be able to conveniently solve the problem of interstellar space travel.
And then of course there are other marvels such as beaming, replicators, etc.

I heard that Pepsi is seriously considering going to the moon to set up advertisements that can be seen from Earth...

Makes sense, but I'm pretty sure you would still need a chain that can withstand an astronomical amount of force on it before it can start to change the orbit of the moon. Certainly not as much as I calculated, but a lot still.
0 -
It isn't the amount of force the chain would have to apply, but it is force that it would have to be able to withstand in order to stay attached.
Its like trying to build a space elevator (and why its difficult at this time), the cord attaching the two objects has to be strong enough to withstand the gravitational force between the object and the planet, otherwise it will rip apart.
0 -
Well, I have calculated how strong the chain or rope or structure would have to be in order to stay attached to the Earth:
F = (Gm1m2)/(d^2) = [(6.67259 x 10^-11)( 5.97 x 10^24 kg)(7.34 x 10^22 kg)] / (3.90778 x 10^8)^2
Force = 1.915 x 10^20 N !!!!!!!!!
So, in order to attach the moon to the earth, you would need something that can withstand atleast 1.915 x 10^20 N of force, or about 43044618100860800000 pounds. Not saying that it is impossible, but you have some huge technical hurdles to overcome if you want to attach the Earth to the Moon.
Needless to say, it is obviously more practical to have the structure move with the moon's orbit, but that is another problem within itself, since if it doesn't follow the moon's orbit exactly, it will break apart.

Work = Force x Distance x Cos (@).
And you are only doing work on an object when it moves. This means that even if you are applying force against an object, if it isn't moving any distance, you aren't doing any work on it.

I know that... I was just making a joke about it. I know that wikipedia isn't all bad, but the fact that people who don't know anything about the subject at hand do degrade the quality of the articles on there.

I'm not so sure if other satellites would be much of a problem since we know where the path of their orbits are, its just a matter of building one that is not in the path of an orbit (or decommission them). And most of the garbage thats up there is small stuff such as lost items or wrappers or stuff that astronauts threw out.
I think that satellites would increase after one is built since it would be far, far cheaper to go into orbit than it currently is. Another thing that I was wondering would be how much cheaper and possible space tourism would be once a space elevator is built, since we would not be required to go through years of training nor would we have to sit in multi-million dollar space shuttles (Though I heard Virgin Galactic built a plane that could go 60 miles above Earth's surface, and its much, much cheaper than NASA).
Seriously, the possibilities are endless with a space elevator.

"c is always constant"' date=' because that's an [b']axiomatic[/b] rebuttal. The thrust of the argument against this essay is "c cannot be variable because c is constant, QED"
You know, the biggest irony in his use of QED is that QED means Quod Erat Demonstratum, which literally translates into because it was demonstrated.
Well, I think that wraps these threads up. I think they should be moved to the trash can; they aren't really all that great and there is nothing more to say in them.

I don't think a line to the moon would be possible, given the fact that the orbit is not equidistant and the fact that you would need some really, really strong material to keep the moon and earth connected. Otherwise, the sheer force of the gravity between the Earth and the Moon would snap it.

Anyone here have an interest in this subject? Basically, a space elevator is, well, an elevator that goes into space. The object or thing thats in space would follow a geosynchronous orbit (meaning it would orbit in such a way that it stays at the same point above the Earth), and things would be tethered to a rope made of some superstrong material (carbon nanotubes have been hypothesized).
here is a link for basic general info on it:

I have a question, what is the point of the Trash Can? I saw it in the Speculations and Pseudoscience forums.

Anybody have some tips on how to create this? I've been thinking about creating one from a pile of junk for some time, and I even have some calculations done already. The main issue is getting actual materials for it. I've been thinking about using a bundle of copper wire for the rails, but then there are issues such as efficiency and then getting enough current to go through them.
Does anyone have any suggestions or tips?

You wanted Iraq. All yours. Enjoy. Have Iran for dessert. Enjoy. That's if you're not too filled up on Freedom Fries and Yellow Cake.
Don't forget to gulp it down with Victory Beer!!!
But yeah, I think our dependence on oil has gone on long enough. Did you guys know that we had battery powered cars, and even vegetable oil powered cars, over a hundred years ago? We only switched over to gasoline because some guy created the modern starter, which made gasoline powered cars safer and more reliable to use.
I once watched a show once about the dangers of staying dependent on oil for about 20 years down the road, and it isn't pretty. Fuel crises, long lines, not enough fuel to even transport basic needs, etc. But the point is, we are going to move away from our dependence, whether by choice or by force.

These days they want sources and everything else. Ugh.
Well, its a free encyclopedia that any idiot can edit, what do you expect?

I'm thinking about making an account over there...

your use of vocabulary is wrong in any case.
For example:
Pluralism is a term used in metaphysics that deals with the notion that multiple realities exist, as opposed to monism (which supposes that only one reality exists).
And cosmology of course is the study of the universe itself.
If you are going to use big fancy words please use them correctly.

who knows...
Personally I think he is just one of those people who wasn't very successful in life, or doesn't feel satisfied with it, and feels the need to make himself known in any possible way. In some ways I feel pity for the guy.
I tried to give him info and references as to why we know what we know, and we have repeatedly asked for him to give us experimental proof, but hey, if he doesn't want to listen to any of it, there is nothing we can do for him.

Compare these:
From site: You have to spend some time studying my theory.
You didn't quite get round to reading MASS EXPLAINED did you?
and
Oh get out of it. You're the one full of assumptions. So full you can't be bothered to actually read the essay' date=' and you drum up any old stuff to try to demonstrate a hatchet job on something you don't understand, and don't want to understand. That's what I meant when I said I understand people. I understand your psychology of belief. You don't.

Well, America is trying to establish itself an empire right now, it is only fitting that it should establish an imperial system of its own lol.
