  1. The perks of living in Australia. We have two possums that live in the roof of the mass spec room. Yesterday one of them urinated all over a piece of equipment worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Totally unrelated but I always find certain types of classification funny that were apparently derived from the marketing section of MS companies (HR vs accurate mass, MRM vs SRM, etc).

      High resolution mass spectrometry.

  2. I overheard a particularly incompetant colleague of mine tell another student that you 'learn through mistakes,' just now. Whille I believe the statement to be true, if all you ever do is make mistakes (as he does), then have you really learned anything?

Well, yes. That much should have been fairly obvious given the fact that a.) I didn't say this comment in particular is what made him incompetent and, b.) my subsequent analogies.

D-K does not necessarily prevent someone to learn, though. It just means that the person incorrectly assess own and other's competence in a given field. Coupled with an inability to learn is quite devastating, though.

I think one naturally follows from the other. If you're convinced that you're better than you actually are, it's reasonable that you aren't going to assess mistakes as being your fault / responsibility and something to learn from.

  3. Today is a good day. I had my first publication accepted and have been asked by the editors to use my artwork for the cover of the issue. Moderate success!

  4. Started training for a 100 km in 48 hr hike today. My legs aren't sure what they did to deserve this, but at least my fundraising efforts are going well.

Non-cotton everything is on my list, as it happens. Good tip on the sudocreme, thanks. I had read about using it not long ago as a cheaper and just-as-good alternative to body glide. I was going to trial both, but if you think that Sudocreme is the way to go, I'll just save my money / invest in more moleskin.

If you have time in your preparation I would try as many permutations as possible. I agree some of the solutions are just too expensive - ie you can afford it but just don't wan tot be ripped off for petroleum jelly in a pretty packet.

We've been training every weekend so far, though I've had to skip a couple because of my ankle injury. I was in a hiking shop the other day to get the people there to double check my shoes fit well. The lady there told me that a lot of people would come in the day before to buy new equipment, having done no training at all. I can't even imagine doing that.

I was recommended some peppermint balm by the same store person, which I'm trying today on the second section...

  5. In continuing my quest to do all of the science, today I have started a new position in a biochemistry lab.

I have switched groups and unis. I was working on a primarily genetics based project, now I'm on one more related to biochem and organic, which I'm taking into a PhD in a few months.

I have a daughter and her man currently drifting about Australia working. Currently somewhere between Brisbane and Sydney . We skype. They said we are not going north because of the crocs and box jelly fish. They like to surf.

    3. hypervalent_iodine

I assume somewhere in northern NSW? Coffs Harbor and the Byron Bay/Tweed areas have beautiful beaches for surfing.

fresh: at the time that I wrote this, I was feeling very sick and sorry for myself. I'd like to say I'm all better now, but as it happens, I came down with another nasty bug just yesterday.

Although I know little about you, I admire you. Being a learned young girl, you have nothing to worry about.

  10. Happy birthday, oh great one! And congratulations on sharing your day with so many 27 year old spambots!

  11. Yes, I decided to give up on chemistry and become a magical sloth. Admittedly, the lack of opposable thumbs is a bit of a pain, but I've mostly worked around this by sharpening my nails to a point simply stabbing things I need to pick up and move around. Also great for mugging unsuspecting victims. On that note, are we still on for coffee / drinks when I come over in December?

  12. Got bored and adopted a llama. I love the internet.

Sorry, I took too long thinking about the twins thing. Tell your sister hi for me, and thanks.

So you have a doppleganger? Does she live in Oz as well, or is it a long-distance resemblance?

      What did Peter do?

    2. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

Heh. Well I don't know if it was Peter, but that would make sense. Apparently someone put acid and something else into their waste drum, which was then left in the store room for pick up. Turns out the waste drum had other ideas about how that was going to go down.

I've had some weird things happen in my halogenated waste bottle before.

  17. I have mixed feelings about that name. If for no other reason than the fact that I now have a Gotye song stuck in my head.

  18. People said that about the third reich once too, you know. But seriously, the suspense is killing me. What is my new nickname?

  19. I have returned to the realms of civilisation.

Woodford? Awesome, and not as wet as last year. ;)

Did you happen to see the Funky Faeries people by any chance? They have the most stunning hand made oil burners.

    4. hypervalent_iodine

      hypervalent_iodine

Ha. Yes, it was by far the driest Woodford I have attended. In fact it was wonderful, weather wise. Only the occasional brief shower.

I think I may have looked at their stall. I was there the whole week doing volunteer work, so I'm pretty sure I saw most everything there was. My wallet can testify to that.

  20. And the same to you and yours! Thank you for the message :)

  21. /me lurks creepily

(finally managed to return the courtesy)

  22. Gee, I wonder who you could possibly be.
