  1. I overheard a particularly incompetant colleague of mine tell another student that you 'learn through mistakes,' just now. Whille I believe the statement to be true, if all you ever do is make mistakes (as he does), then have you really learned anything?

      He's probably one of those people that learnt more facts than principles hence his inability to translate his knowledge to situations that are novel to him.

      Observational Learning - It is better to learn from another's mistakes, but we cannot always since we are all unique.

      I personally cannot fathom how attempting to placate a student by telling him that mistakes can be useful in any way alludes to incompetence. Rather, I should think that particular adjective would better fit an instructor who mercilessly denigrated a student for his errors. I smell another reason for you calling this guy incompetent.
