      Mine's a hybrid. Could I put a 9-speed in mine with the right back wheel? The inside measurement is about 140mm.

      You would need a new back wheel with a freehub. There are - typically - lots of variants. 135 is MTB standard, apparently 150mm is unusual. There are loads of 2nd hand 135 wheels on ebay. 140mm is unusual - I reckon you just need to measure more accurately.
