  1. gene splicing is not anything at all like x-men. In X-Men it happened naturally. Gene splicing is the opposite. It would be cool though to be 5 times stronger than the average human or 3 times smarter. I read an article a while ago that discovered that childhood genius had a unique gene or something. If we could put this gene in ourselves that'd be really cool.
  2. I was asking a lot of questiosn actually and its he. Where the hell did you get she from?
  3. So testosterone is the only thing that tells the penis to grow? What tells it to stop growing?
  4. yea i thought there would still be problems with genetic diversity.
  5. Okay, so at some point people had to have mated with their brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers. My understanding of why inbreeding is bad at a genetic view today is because it increases the risks of expressing a genetic disease. Someone correct me if I am wrong here. If all genetic diseases were eliminated from the germline then genetically it wouldn't be bad because you wouldn't have to worry about expressing genetic diseases. Keep in mind I've been referring to inbreeding as genetically and not morally. I don't support inbreeding or all the redneck hicks that do and it is illegal for a reason. Comments?
  6. Yea more on the molecular side. I know it was vague. I'll try to narrow it down a bit. I've actually got a few questions. 1. Genetically what signals the penis to grow during adolescence? 2. Is it a genetic switch that controls growth? 3. I know it's made up of cells, but what type of cell specifically? We have a lot of different ones, don't we? That's all I got for now. Thanks.
  7. Yea I know that but biochemically what is it made of?
  8. What is it made out of on a molecular level. I know it's not a muscle so what is it?
  9. I think that this would be a lot better foray into genetic engineering than germline manipulation. How far away are we from seeing the effects of somatic cell engineering? What will the benefits of somatic cell engineering be? We we be able to make humans stronger or smarter or both? Anything else anyone would like to add. -John
  10. Didn't read through all those posts gotta do something. So isn't absolute zero, 0 kelvins, which would be -273 degrees celcius.
  11. I was really getting into more the technical terms like someone else was saying about atoms and such. And good job on the fight club quote. It's my second fav next to Gladiator(all-time greatest movie).
  12. So obviously this is a physical thing, but in science class I was always taught that matter is neither created nor destroyed, it only changes forms. So technically wouldn't everyone on earth be the same age?
  13. What would be a good microscope to buy though?
  14. To create a button in awt you should be able to do Button a = new Button("NAME"); then add it to a panel or frame. Don't do a mouselistener do actionlistener. in the constructor also: a.addActionListener(this); public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { whatever you want done when the button is pressed. } If your using SWING all you would do is declar JButton a = new JButton(); I'll get you some files from my school tomorrow that thoroughly demonstrate swing.
  15. What exactly could I do with a microschope? Prolly just look at them hey.
  16. If I buy a microscope is there anything I could really do with it to study cells and what not? What's would be a good microscope to buy? Thanks. -John
  17. Are there animals out in the wild that never get sick or have a very high resistance to viruses and bacteria? And if there are, are we already trying to figure out why?
  18. I'm just a lover of the science and have no college studying but from my understanding of it you would need the genome map of an ape(I don't know if they already have this or not) and human genome map which we already have. You could then probably take human DNA and modify it to be like an apes. However if I recall they don't really know what a lot of our genes actually do yet . And also why would you want to deevolve people. I'd think one would want to improve on the human genome, not set it back. This is just my not really educated that much opinion so maybe someone whose smarter in this thing could chime in. Recalling a Star Trek episode. The Klingons too "augment" dna and tried to modify it to work for Klingons. The changes worked at the start but their neural pathways degraded. One of their test subjects was not screened properly and they had a virus in their body. The augment DNA changed the virus and it became airborne and started to travel between planets(continents for are century) and infected all Klingons. We don't know what messing with our DNA will bring about. It needs to be slowly developed. I believe we can't rush something like this although there are people who will and are probably already working towards creating human "augments" of their own. -John
  19. 1. Gladiator(What can I say, if you've seen it you know this movie kicks ass) 2. Batman Begins(Best Batman yet. I love the direction Nolan has taken. The other batmans all had that chessy feel to them where as this is serious) 3. Dog Soldiers(cool movie) 4. Underworld or Underworld: Evolution. I can't tell what movie is better. 5. Armageddon
  20. Remember one thing about the Greek and Roman Empires, they both fell. Here's a step that I've been thinking about to solve or immigration problem. 1. Either grant amnesty to all illegal aliens in the country now as long as they meet certain criterium as ability to speak and comprehend english, other aptitude tests, and they will never have full citizenship. They will not have the ability to recieve any kind of government funds, they will recieve no tax breaks, they will be required to pay into social security, but will not be able to recieve it when they are older. And then you "lock down" the border. OR Round up as many illegal immigrants as you can and toss deport them and then lock down the borders. 2. If illegal immigrants come here and have a kid they're child is a naturalized citizen and we cannot send they're parents back because their child is a citizen. I know this is in our constitution and what not but we need to amend that. Their child should not become a citizen or children of theirs when they get older. I think some European countries do this. 3. Allow legal workers to come into the US to do jobs the Americans will absolutely not do. Proof should have to be submitted that a company made a valiant effort to search for American employees and offered a pay rate not 50 cents below the average of companies in that industry. Then and only then should legal workers be allowed to come into the US. I could could write a lot more about this but I gotta go somewhere, but In conclusion I think this plan would still benefit legal workers and I think it is a fair tradeoff to living life in Mexico or whatever country their from.
  21. I'll be taking this may and we just started our marine biology case study for it. Anyone else take this and was it hard?
  22. Badchad: What is your major and what school are u going to? Thanks.
  23. yea. what the future possibilities are, like getting rid of genetic disease and increasing human lifespan.
  24. In my English class we're doing a research paper on what we think is the greatest medical advancement and I'm gonna do the mapping of the human genome. Any thoughts?
