  1. Nearly found it...

My £50 finders fee is still on offer to the first person who can find me a diagram showing a neuroanatomy diagram of the thumb with structures which clearly correspond to the

triangular marking in the above photo, (post No.5).

    Here are a few leads…

    · Variations in the nerves of the thumb and index finger. [J Bone Joint Surg Br. 1975] PMID: 1194318

    · Anatomic variations in sensory innervation of the hand and digits. [J Hand Surg [Am]. 1999] PMID: 10584938

    · [The sympathetic axons of the nerves of the hand] [Handchir Mikrochir Plast Chir. 2002] PMID: 12601602

    · Anatomic variations in the motor and sensory supply of the thumb. [Clin Orthop Relat Res. 1985] PMID: 3978968

    · The sensory innervation pattern of the fingers. [J Neurol. 1998] PMID: 9617711

  3. How are you trying to connect the DVD recorder?

Connecting the "composite PAL" signal from the computer to the "video input" of the DVD recorder.

As I said this works fine with the VCR, but the vertical syncronisation of the DVD is different,

I believe some sort of inverter circuit is required to change the direction of the vert sync pulse.

(Incidentally a "vertical sync" output connection is available at the computer).

  4. Vertical Sync problem

I have used an old (1980’s) computer to generate titles for video recorded on to my VCR. This works fine, however I have tried to connect this antique computer to a DVD recorder and the computer-generated picture slowly rolls upwards.

I believe that this is a “negative” (vertical) sync problem, and an additional circuit is required to correct this rolling picture.

Does anyone know where I can obtain, (in order of preference):-

    1. a ready-built adapter to cure this vertical sync problem.

    2. a kit of parts to home build an adapter.

    3. a diagram of how to build such a device.

Please post links to any site which you think may help me cure my rolling picture problem.

  5. I think the worst possible thing you could do is to put monetary value on human organs.

Humans organs, and their replacements, do have monetary value:-

" If you lose one hand, one foot or one eye the plan pays $25,000 " http://www.mediaworkers.org/healthplan/life.html

" The cost of kidney dialysis averages about $44,000 per year per patient, using 1993 figures. "

    http://www.umm.edu/news/releases/kidcost.html

  6. " Specialists call for legalised trade in kidneys

    David Spurgeon

As patients die while waiting for transplantations and the sale of organs on the black market keeps growing, a US nephrologist and his daughter, a transplantation specialist, have argued for legalising the voluntary sale and purchase of kidneys.

In an article published online on 15 February in Kidney International the authors quote the US Department of Health and Human Services as saying, “Each day, about 74 people receive an organ transplant. However, 17 people die each day waiting for transplants that cannot take place because of the shortage of donated organs” (http://www.kidney-international.org, doi:10.1038/sj.ki.5000262). "

Anyone fancy selling one of their kidneys ?

  7. I did make a suggestion my first post. I suggested to make reports of every incident to social services....

It may give you closure on this matter to know that Social Services have been aware of this child's family since before his birth: his mother gave birth to him when she was 15 years old, (age of consent in the UK is 16).

So he has a social worker, he has seen a psychiatrist (hence the Ritalin),

and is well known (infamous) to teachers, the police, the judiciary and the fire brigade.

So every authority is aware of his behaviour, but apparently nothing can be done to prevent his chronic offending.

  8. I started this thread because I questioned the use of Ritalin in this individual.

Evidently it did not stop or reduce his offending, it may have even have made it worse, (here is a similar case):-

" Donna Miller's son Lee was prescribed Ritalin after he was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of five.

Donna, who lives in Edinburgh, found her son's behaviour immediately worsened.

Although a boisterous "typical boy" before starting on the drugs, Lee became aggressive and violent when taking the medication.

"His behaviour totally changed. He was a handful before, but on that drug he was frightening," she said.

"The final straw was when he attacked his brother Derek.

"He was only five but he picked Derek up and physically threw him through a glass door."

Donna took her son off Ritalin after six weeks due to concerns that he was a danger to the family. "

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/5308292.stm

As for the usefulness of "labelling", a correct diagnosis is necessary for correct therapy.

In the UK a review of the medical guidelines for diagnosing and treating ADHD will not be available until 2008.

  9. " The terms "sociopath" and "psychopath" are sometimes used to describe an individual with anti-social personality disorder. People with anti-social personality disorder show a chronic lack of concern for the rules and expectations of society, and repeatedly violate the rights of others.

The exact cause of anti-social personality disorder isn't known. However, genetic and environmental factors may play a role. Anti-social personality disorder occurs more often in men than in women.

Signs and symptoms typically appear in childhood and may include bedwetting, cruelty to animals and pyromania. Teens and adults with anti-social personality disorder may:

    Repeatedly break the law

    Display reckless or impulsive behavior

Exhibit persistent irritability and aggressive behavior

Repeatedly lie to and manipulate others

Be unable to sustain long-term relationships

Show consistent irresponsibility, such as failing to pay bills or hold a steady job

    Abuse alcohol or drugs

Show little or no remorse for their actions

Anti-social personality disorder is difficult to treat. Group counseling may help some people. Treatment of coexisting conditions, such as anxiety, depression and substance abuse, is also important and may improve some symptoms of anti-social personality disorder. "

  10. Since I started this link this 14 year old boy has:-

Committed arson three times, (fire brigade required for one),

Threatened to hit a much younger boy with a brick,

Threatened to stab a much younger girl and

Attacked a female teacher, (he has now been expelled from school).

Evidently Ritalin is not effective in this individual.

  11. The test was done as part of a workup for idiopathic fatigue. Subclass elevation was not what we expected to find. Deficiencies have been found in some studies of CFS. ....

We need to narrow it down somehow' date=' but I don't know of any way to do this that is clinically feasible.[/quote']

How about testing for SLE ?, (SLE would produce chronic fatigue and elevated IgG).

  12. " Liquids will form patterns with a very high resolution. High audio frequencies can create very fine pattern, barely visible to the naked eye. A laser beam, reflected by the vibrating surface can be used to magnify the effect. The reflected laser beam can produce an image on a screen, which will represent the vibrating surface. The projected images can look like 3D holograms, and it is often quite difficult to see how the projected pattern relates to the actual pattern on the reflective material. "
