  1. Hey everyone again. It's been a long time since I've checked things out here on SFN. A lot of changes...

Anyway, tonight I finally got around to taking apart an old guitar hero controller. I've kept the circuit boards thinking there might be something interesting they could be used for. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about circuits and electronics (really my weakest area in engineering studies so far). So does anyone have any ideas on something good that this can be used for and how one might go about doing so? Thanks.

  2. Ok, I was afraid that they used something like that. So I guess I can just copy/paste the script since I'm only going to need about 5 pages. I'd just like them all to have the sidebar.

As for the image links, I was just trying to get one to link to SFN since my actually file isn't ready yet.

    <a href="http://scienceforums.net">
    <img border="0" src="c:\Documents and Settings\Java Programs\WebPage\SFN.bmp" alt="SFN" width="180" height="90">
    </a>

It works perfect in IE and the link part works in Firefox, I just can't see the image.

I guess I should also mention that although it's a .bmp file in this case, I have tried .jpg and .gif. It just happened the last one I tried before copying with .bmp. None work.

  3. tree, I'm aware I hijacked the thread but it's pretty much dead as I can tell. I'm sure one of the mods will split it if necessary.

Klaynos, I was told frames are bad for layouts. You even say that...

Looking at wikipedia as an example, there's a list of links down the side that correspond to a page in the middle of the window. The links aren't affected by the page opening in the middle. How is that done?

  4. I figured I'd reopen an old thread for what should be a short question. I'm trying to build a very simple webpage that has a few images as links. Same as most websites, there is a list of links in a left hand column of a table and then the main page is on the right. I'm having two problems. 1) It wont display the images in Fireforx. They come across just fine in IE and the links work in Firefox, the images just wont show. 2) I can't figure out how to get the links in the left cell to open in the right cell. At this point I'm starting to think it has something to do with creating a CSS sheet.

I've never really done anything with webpages before. I just need these two things to complete a small concept design for work. I've searched the web for hours now. Can anyone give any ideas?

  5. I always figured it would be a good idea to start the year off by introducing a problem (currently impossible for the students to solve) that incorporates as many of the topics of the class as possible. Then as you start building up knowledge and concepts in the class, the application of them should start to become apparent in this big problem. It ties everything together at the end and shows some application. I'm sure it's not possible to find a nice problem like this for every course, but for many it should be.

  6. I'm having a little trouble with some of my homework here and need a little guidence. The problems are both proofs and I have a lot of trouble deciding what a conclusive proof is. I'm looking for a little hint on what might be a good first step or two in showing the following two things:

    1) Let (v1...vn) be a spanning set for the vector space V and let v be any other vector in V. Show that v,v1,...,vn are linearly dependent.

I'm just having trouble conclusively showing in this one that the coefficient on v must be some combination of the others. I know it's true through common sense but I can't prove it.

    2) Let V be a vector space. Let v1, v2, v3 and v4 be vectors in V. Assume that {v1, v2, v3} is linearly independent and that {v1, v2, v3, v4} is linearly dependent. Prove that v4 is in Span(v1, v2, v3).

Same as before, I can see why it's true but can't prove it. Any help?

  7. This java thing is really starting to bug me. I can't figure out how to use the libraries. I downloaded netbeans to try to write a program, and I did. But it wont run because I know neither what libraries I have nor what objects are available in those libraries. Does anyone know how to find a comprhensive list of the libraries available to me (their names) and what objects are in them?

  8. I looked at scintilla klaynos...thanks. But I still can't figure this all out. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's because I started with MatLab and html but why doesn't there seem to be any easy way to type in Java code, hit a button and watch it execute. I haven't found how to execute my program on any text editor yet for Java...

  9. Hey guys, I need help getting started programming in java. Does anyone have any suggestions as to (most importantly) a program I can use to write any program and compile it in java? And then secondary is a website that might be very useful for explaining the basics to programming?

Don't worry, I have already googled the second question and found something decent but I'm asking if there are suggestions as to which is the best to learn from. The first, I have no idea where to start. I don't exactly understand what the advantage/disadvantage to each program is and google doesn't really help me solve that either.

I'm looking for as much help getting started in java programming as possible because my teacher really isn't very helpful and I can't get it on my own. Thanks.

  10. ok' date=' if we stick to the bag and marbles idea, it`s a bit cleaner.

there is a bag of 100 marbles, they Could all be red, or they Could all be green, and infact any mixture of the 2 inbetween.

so from 100% probability right down to zero.

your saying its not a 50/50 chance of picking red one?

how about if there was no possibliity of a mixture, all the balls are either all reg or all green, you have to pick one, surely it`s just the same as a coin toss?[/quote']

It's pretty clear from the information that you've give us that we cannot give you a definite probably from the reactivity of that chemical. But I can tell you that the odds are almost zero that your chemical is guranteed to be non-reactive. I can also tell you that the odds are almost zero that your chemical is guranteed to be reactive.

What it seems to me you're trying to get from all this is that the odds are 50/50. That's not a valid conclusion. What I think would be fair to say is that the odds are probably best that that chemical has a 50/50 percent chance of being reactive. I could walk around your shop, look at your stuff and think 'yeah, that chemical's probably got a 50/50 chance of being reactive', but that's not a gurantee, it just seems like the odds tell me 50/50 are good odds. If I walked through a fireworks factory, I might say any randomly produced chemical might have a greater than 50/50 chance of being reactice (again, I don't know for sure, but the odds seem to be more in favor of that conclusion). If I walked through a plant that only had two chemicals, both known to be highly unreactive, I would say odds are that there's a less than 50% chance of getting a chemical reaction.

So I guess it all depends on the situation you're in to get information that can lead to the likelyhood of reactivity. We can't say for sure, but we can reason out what probability is more likely than others. That doesn't mean it's necessarily 50/50 though. (Knowing you, YT, I'd say the odds are pretty high that that chemical would be highly toxic or explosive ;))

[edit] wow, I re-read that and I'm not sure it'll make sense to anyone but me. Maybe someone can help clean that up a bit for me...

  11. I'd imagine you'd have to have some general idea of the number of stable vs. unstable chemicals out there. Personally, I know very little about chemistry so I can't really venture a guess. But I can't think of any mathematical way to show percentage of blow-upable-ness without some prior info on stable vs. unstable chemicals.

To me it's like you're asking the following:

There are 100 balls in a hat. Each ball is either red or green. I pick a ball from the hat. What are the odds it is red?

Well, if they're all green, then it's zero. All red, 100%. It all depends on the ratio of stable to unstable chemicals I guess.

  12. Um, lets see, I guess its the diffrence in how people react to and understand things. For example, severian, jordan and I are all INTJ, which means we would react to the same thing in the same general manner, whereas Bettina, being INTP would react slightly diffrently. Depending on what it is, Bettina's reaction may be the same as Jordan's or Severian's, because of the similarity in thier type (only one diffrence) but an ESFP, the opposite of INTJ, would react and understand things in a completly diffrent way.

    haha...Yeah, I got that much.

There seem to be two main categories: IN... and EN... and I was wondering if there is a basic difference between the two and what that difference is. (Introverted vs extroverted?)

  13. I remember watching some little documentary about those kinds of glasses in a psychology class. They were following a lady who was going to wear them for a week or so (at all times). At first she had trouble doing the most basic things, but soon she got that. Then fine motor skills were her only problem and after a day or two she could do just about anything at a normal rate (I don't think they let her drive while doing this though). By the end of the experiment, she had to conciously imagine what it was like to see things the 'right way' again. Her body had totally adjusted to the inverted glasses and she no longer noticed any difference from the way her vision used to be. Then, like Glider said, she had to take them off and the whole process started again...

  14. INTJ like severian. Other INTJ's:

    C. S. Lewis

    Rudy Giuliani

    Donald Rumsfeld

    General Colin Powell

    Hannibal

    Chester A. Arthur

    Calvin Coolidge

    Thomas Jefferson

    John F. Kennedy

    James K. Polk

    Woodrow Wilson

    Gandalf the Grey

  15. I know I would do it, I'm just not sure when.

If I went up tomorrow I know I'd never be able to come back to Earth and then get up and go to my job every day. I'd just have trouble sitting at a desk knowing I was just recently up in space.

Idealy going into space would be one of the last things I'd do with my life. I think I'd appreciate it a lot more then. But then again, waiting that long could only mean that the lift-off will kill me.

The timing would have to be right (I don't know what that is) but then I'd definitely do it.

  16. Yeah, I saw a blood-red moon once also. One of the coolest things I've seen. But I was in the middle of nowhere, not in a big city. I've always had trouble seeing the moon in big cities, with all those big buildings and stuff...

More than just being red, some atmospheric distortion was making it into a mushroom-cloud shape (it was just on the horizon). It looked just like an atomic bomb going off on the horizon.

  17. If you've never heard of 'Mr. Smith goes to Washington' it doesn't mean that it's not a classic' date=' it just means you're uncultured! :P

    [/quote']

I kinda figured that. Thanks for reaffirming for me though!

Really though, I've never even heard of it. I know I've not seen a lot of the classics (I tend not to like the 'Classics') but I've still heard of most of them. Oh well, I'm off to study American Pop Culture. ;)
